The Marathon Trilogy - Get It!
NINJA EDIT - READ THIS FIRST From now on, people who post spam, advertising and Halo crap in this thread are going to get maximum length bans. I don't care how clever or witty you think you are, or how urgent your question about the latest Reach update is. Don't post that S'pht here. The other ninja may have let it slide, but I won't.
This guide works for Windows, OS X, and Linux. With the release of Aleph One 1.0 on December 1st, 2011, the hitherto-confusing installation process has been streamlined dramatically. Curated community plugins have been bundled with the game files into a single download for each game. Get your Marathon here! If you wish to find alternatives or additions to the bundled plugins, check out Simplici7y. The site is active, with new content submitted regularly. It should also be noted that Marathon 2: Durandal is available for purchase from the Xbox Live Arcade. [Edited on 03.04.2012 5:04 PM PST]

 • Useful Stuff Instruction Manuals, Plot, and Walkthroughs The instruction manuals are available as pdfs. They make for interesting reads. > Marathon Instruction Manual > Marathon 2: Durandal Instruction Manual > Marathon Infinity Instruction Manual A comprehensive summary of the plot, as well as all terminal messages, may be found on this site (scroll down the sidebar to the left to navigate by game/level). If you get stuck, refer to the Marathon Spoiler Guide. You may also use this to find all the hidden areas. Alternatively (and only for Marathon 2), BerserkerBarage has created a very nice series of video walkthroughs, found here. The Preferences Menu Before starting the game, walk through the preferences menu. You'll probably want to change your control scheme to use the mouse to aim. Also, take a look at the keyboard layout - of particular importance is the Map key, which brings up a map of the area you have explored so far. While you're there, an old trick is to make caps lock your Run key, so you can toggle it instead of having to hold it down (note that Always Run is turned on by default). Tips & Tricks You can start playing at any level from the main menu. Hold ctrl + shift then start a new game, and you will be presented with a list of levels. Note, however, that you will only start with a couple clips for the magnum and your fists. Hangbrain has written a very nice summary of gameplay tricks found here. Multiplayer All the Marathon games have online play capabilities, including the Xbox Live version. There's likely to be a few people online at any given time, but for a more structured experience you should check out For Carnage Apply Within, which is a very active group that organizes matches. • Other Bungie Games The Marathon Trilogy is the most recent game series to have been freewared by Bungie. Oni and the Myth series unfortunately possess the twin misfortunes of being hard to find and illegal to download, so the best you can do is find them on an online store or play the demos. The main obstacle to playing even older Bungie games is that they were all written for now-obsolete Apple computers from the early 90's. The only way you are able to play these is through emulation (which will not be discussed here) or through the use of an actual Apple computer from that era. The games themselves are all freeware, and may be downloaded from the following pages: > Gnop! > Operation: Desert Storm > Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete > Pathways into Darkness [Edited on 03.18.2011 5:35 PM PDT]
Posted by: Tycho 41 49 Delving even further in Bungie history, you'll find Pathways into Darkness, a sci-fi game set in a lost pyramid. You are an American SpecOps soldier, on a mission to set and detonate a nuclear weapon to destroy the pyramid and stop the awakening of the Dreaming God. The style of gameplay incorporates heavy puzzle-solving and role-playing elements as well as standard FPS gameplay. Additionally, there are quite a few interesting plot tie-ins to the Marathon universe. Due to the difficulty of obtaining the original game and getting it to work, a project is well underway to port the game to the Aleph One engine. The project website is found here; it may appear to be dead, but rest assured that is not the case. You can download a demo and somewhat-functional beta of the game at this time. Be sure to check this website once in a while for further updates.
How do you know it isn't dead? • I know somebody who knows the guy. I should clarify, it isn't officially dead. He apparently still works on it from time to time. Knowing how these things work, it's probably vaporware. That's just my prediction though, I certainly hope I'm wrong. [Edited on 12.31.2009 1:52 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: Shadow Krait will this aleph one and the marathon games work with Windows Vista?
Yes. Also if anyone wants to submit scenarios that they have played and approve of, I might include them in the last section. I would prefer it if said scenarios took place in the Marathon universe, and don't just share its game engine (e.g. Morgana's Revenge). [Edited on 12.31.2009 3:31 PM PST]

 • Very timely! Just the other day I was thinking about reviving my old Marathon Pacifist project, and even did a few test runs. Unfortunately, saved films still cut out at the end frequently on AlephOne, which makes certain levels less likely to properly complete, but I might find a work-around if I decide to go forward with those again.

 • I am having trouble installing Marathon. -I downloaded and unzipped the Aleph One -Then I downloaded the Marathon:Infinity scenario -I tried to unzip the Infinity but it gave me an error message saying that the zipped folder is empty and i need to copy files to it but the file read that it had 29.342 MB of data in it so, I shrugged it off and decided to copy the Aleph One.exe to it -Then I get another message saying that that the zipped folder is corupt or invalid. So it did not transfer the Aleph One.exe Any help with this? And if it is of any relevance I am running Windows Vista 64-bit

 • Try re-downloading the Infinity game files. What unzipping program are you using?

 • I already tried redownloading the infinity files but when I download it, it shows no progress bar but a line under it saying "open so far: (MB)" but i click on the save button. I am using whatever unzip program that is integrated into Vista

 • You're having trouble downloading? Try a different browser. I wouldn't be sure if that would work, but really that's highly irregular. Try downloading a different scenario as well.

 • Can you provide screenshots? Upload them to imgur. I can tell you the files are certainly not corrupted, and I have successfully played all the Marathon games on 64-bit Vista.

 • Before i give you some screenshots do you think that it is because of the file directory I put the Aleph One in and Marathon: Ininfity because currently I have both of those listed under a folder I created in C:Program Files(x86)\Bungie (but when you get to the Bungie file you click on compatibility files)

 • Um. Well maybe. It might have something to do with user permissions since you need to be an admin to do most things in the Program Files directory.

 • Yeah, try going through the steps in another directory outside of Program Files as a test. If it works, you'll know that's the problem. If not, you will have at least eliminated one possible reason for it.

 • Thanks for the M3 post. I downloaded and unzipped everything effortlessly. Copied A1 to each of the game directories. Ran A1, but got the following in the stderr file: "Can't open video display (No video mode large enough for 1280x800) WARNING: Failed to initialize OpenGL with 24 bit colour WARNING: Retrying with 16 bit colour Can't open video display (No video mode large enough for 1280x800)" Any help ? What is OpenGL ? WO

 • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenGL What operating system are you using? Try downloading the newest drivers for your graphics card. Also Shadow Krait, I can't imagine why the files you are downloading are somehow corrupted, so the problem has to be on your end. Try deleting everything and starting fresh - download the files to some directory (try not in Program Files), extract using 7-zip. [Edited on 01.04.2010 9:50 PM PST]
