Impersonating
In our drop-down menu for hiding and muting we have some pretty bad things. But in the code of conduct impersonating other users is also against the rules.
I have already had three different people copying my username and avatar for the purpose of trying to make me look bad. If this is against the code of conduct and you ARE going to allow people to change their name to one already in use (which I see NO reason for... it cannot possibly ever be used for anything beneficial), then can we at least make sure we can report these instances so they can be taken care of by the moderators themselves? Me hiding these people doesn't stop them from proclaiming they're me to everybody else that wouldn't think to check their profile.

My username would have been unavailable to me if we weren't allowed to do it, and it would be in use by.. no one. I'm not entirely clear on this, but I [i]think[/i] it eliminates the need for auto-deleting accounts. Your username no longer etches a unique mark on the website, so when and if you decide to leave you'll be as memorable as a fart in the wind... and you wont piss off the next guy that tries to use your username, especially if it isn't unique.

Truth be told, when scanning the old forum, I would keep an eye out for color bars and avatars to read only who I wanted to read. With this new system, I read almost ever post and decide on the content of the post as to reply or involve myself with that person, rather than the user name. And honestly, if another burritosenior is cooler, then he becomes my new best friend... Sorry... not sorry. Impersonations aren't that rampant, that I've seen, anyway.

21 RepliesOur reasoning is that in the real world, there are lots of people with the same name. You deal with it just fine there. Are you telling me you can't deal with it here? If so, why not (serious question)? Is there something that can be changed (other than making display names unique since that defeats the point of having them at all) that would help? Not to say that it couldn't be changed back, but let's see if you can narrow your feedback a bit. I think of it like first name/last name. We have lots of people named Matt at Bungie. They have different last names.

So if we saw an Achronos or DeeJ without that little icon, it's much easier to spot them as an imposter. (Ignoring the presence of special avatars and the "Bungie" tag for a second which users don't have). That way you can know someone's real ID without having to click on their name, (and easily catch out any impersonators since you'd wonder why this burritosenior isn't "verified"). It would kind of suck for those who choose to have a different display name from their ID though.

Do you have an xbox account linked? No one can change their Halo avatars, so that would separate you from impersonators.

An instance of this happening is sure to be a short-lived, temporary affliction at best. There are systems that definitively identify you as an individual on Bungie.net's back end that can easily be used to clear one's name if such impersonation takes place. Situations like the one you're talking about are surely one of the responsibilities the Ninja's will be accepting the Mantle for :p

The name change was a horrible idea. I also don't understand why they gave us the option to change out Unique ID. The Display Name is bad enough, but if they change their Unique ID then I have to take the time going to their profile to look at their aliases to see if it's really them or not. Hopefully they remove this entire feature, or at least stop allowing users to change their Unique ID.

2 RepliesHide them when you spot them. It's easy to figure out. Just click on their profile display name in a thread. You get a small box showing you their unique ID. I just block them. Let them wallow in their own world of nothing.

Display names should be unique, just like IDs. You shouldn't even have to worry about someone taking your name and copy catting you. This is just one of the many problems with bungie.next.

Having the same display name as another user should not be against any rules, but deliberately impersonating a user should be. I think the ninjas should get a new tool that allows them to ban users from using a display name for a certain amount of time. The tool should only be used on rare occasions though. Also, once titles are on this website again it'll be easier to tell the difference between impersonators and the actual user anyways.

That's pretty -blam!-ed up, nobody should have the same display name. Hopefully they'll change this.
