This seems to have assumed that the Exo were originally built with individual personalities for some sort of altruistic reason. Given what we know about human nature, and the way we construct mass-produced killing tools, that sounds unlikely. People already have issues walking through the Uncanny Valley when you put a face on an ATM. Putting not only a face, but also the surface perception of true individuality and volition into a machine you're intending to use as cannon fodder would be pretty contrary to our historical attitudes to such things. Not only does it creep out the civilians, it reduces the effectiveness of your commanders; sending cruise missiles in is a no brainer, but what if you have to sit down with them first over coffee and discuss the battle plan? Suddenly they're not disposable, and then what's the point? Another answer might be that the Exo were created to replace specific people. Infiltrators, perhaps. This would provide a justification for going to the expense and trouble of making weapon that could talk back, desert, defect, or refuse to fight. "Exo" is an interesting choice for a moniker, as well. Exo-skeleton? What if the personalities trapped inside appear to be human because originally they were human? Maybe the Exo was originally just the battlefield embodiment of of a soldier thousands of miles away. We already do that now, but our tools are far more crude. Anyway, it was a fun read. More thought about why humanity would create this specific weapon in this specific way may serve you well.

  • When they were built by humans as weapons of war they didn't have personalities at all (whether it was a reasonable thing to do, building them to look like us, is irrelevant because its what happened canonically). The Traveler provided the rest. Their personalities etc, weren't a human decision. Humanity had no say in uplifting them to sentience from what we know. It was an independent act from the silent floating machine god and its space magic. All of which is to say, I think you misunderstood something vital in your response.

  •
Built for a long-forgotten struggle, Exos are self-aware war machines so advanced that nothing short of a Ghost can understand their inner functions. They remain ciphers, even to themselves: their origins and purpose lost to time. Whoever built the Exos fashioned them in humanity's image, gifting them with diversity of mind and body. Many of the City's Exo citizens live and work alongside their organic brethren. But others fight again, re-forged in the Light of the Traveler to serve as Guardians.
All which is to say, I think you missed something vital in your research.

  • Do you always have to be so smug about things? Its the only reason I don't like talking to you sometimes. You just aren't a gracious winner. The word "Whoever" here suggests humanity may not have built them in the first place. If that's the case, we're both off our rockers. Your right, I guess I missed something, but it looks like your assumption is also unjustified. (Based on that source alone).

Garbage in garbage out, my friend. If you thought that parting shot of yours didn't drip smug-funk all down the thread, you were mistaken. All I did was hand it back to you. That aside, you're quite right that "whoever" makes us both look a bit like madfolk, if you read it broadly enough, but in context it seems to reference an unknown human agency, rather than, say, a giant wheel of Camembert. Fortunately, we're gorgeous madfolk. ;)
Besides which, sometimes I win graciously, I just do it by omission.
• I guess it was bad. I didn't really mean it like that, but I see what you mean. When you did it though... it was just so glaringly intentional. I'll call it equal parts blame in this instance. Side note, I laughed incredibly hard at your cheese wheel crack XD. To your last topic, I can only say we are the most fantastic ones I know.
Cheers to the madfolk. -raises glass-
