Post Bumping

Not sure if this was posted before, but to get rid of people bumping their own post when no one else responds to it, just take off the reply button for a person's own post, and that way, they can't reply but they can still edit.

 •
Posted by: REprpEzekiel Okay after this discussion, I'm not sure what I am doing. I create a new topic and wait for people to respond. As soon as someone responds I reply to what he said. Is this bumping aswell because my thread gets up to front page again? Sometimes I do this because I consider the thread to be of general interest.
it depends on what you are posting. if you are replieing with something usefull, it's ok, if you are posting something useless and rediculous, than that's to be considered wrong.

 • If you are responding to a post and adding something to what the previous person said, then its not post bumping. If your whole post says "What he said" well then your post may be considered bumping because there really is no need.

 • Yes, you make yourself perfectly clear. We get it. 'nuff said. However, I/We disagree. My arguments were that a person should be able to reply to their own post. If they were the last person to reply to a thread, and they aren't able to get back to that thread for a week, causing it to sink to page 2 or 3; and if they all of a sudden have something to say that's worth the attention of others, then what they have to say should be seen by others. If all they can do is edit their post, then no one will even see that they changed it unless they for some reason go to page three and out of curiousity check out the thread. In order for people to see that they added anything, the post will have to jump to the top of the board. A bump is only a bump if it has no use but to push the thread up to the top. By eliminating the reply button, sure you're eliminating their ability to bump, but you're also stopping the possibly intelligent discussion. And to make myself clear, I'm saying it should be alright to reply to one's own post. Now I think I've restated the same thing enough to be understood. And just to make sure this doesn't come across as any bit hostile, let me make it clear that I'm not attacking you, Captain K Mart; I'm just expressing my differing views. If we were doing this face-to-face, I'd be smiling and friendly. Just my thoughts, Poocho :)

 • After one person replies then you can keep bumping anyway.

 • Okay, let me try once again. The point that I'm trying to get across is that people should not be allowed to bump their own post. If someone else responds to the post, then they can reply to the other person's post . I'm talking about replying to their own posts, before anyone else has a chance to post. I gave an example of what I was talking about earlier in this post. They can leave the reply button in for the thread that someone made, but not for their posts. They can reply to the thread, but only if someone else makes a post. Do I make myself clear, or do I need to go into more detail?

 • Yea I agree with poocho. I've locked maybe 5 topics because of bumping...It's not a big problem, but it's cool that you guys are thinking of solution nonetheless. Keep up the good suggestions.

 • I can see why you feel that way, but I think you're not thinking of something vitally important; What if the person who just posted wants to add something long/important to the thread? If all they could do was edit their post, then no one would know that anything new was added to the discussion, and they'd be very likely to simply ignore the seemingly finished thread. While bumping is obviously not a good thing, if an older thread gets a new addition that contributes to the topic, it should be brought to the attention of others--not kept dead on page 3. From what I've seen, bumping hasn't been a huge problem. If was, then perhaps your bold suggestion would be more appropriate. However, I think for the time being a simple reminder from the forum moderators will suffice. Just my thoughts, Poocho :)

 • Okay, lets see if I can clear things up a bit. After I have written this post, I have the option of: A) editing my post, or B) replying to my post. The secondary option, option B, should be disabled, making the poster unable to reply to their own post and subsequently, making it unable for them to bump their own post back to top. They can edit their post all they want, that's not the issue, the issue is to stop people from bumping their own posts and replies back up to the top.

 • If you're talking to me, Poocho then: Nope, I'm not much on Star Wars games. (I lke the movies, though!) But, as soon as I figured out you could bold on this forum, I did. I forget who I saw bolden first, though. *Edit* How do you make polls? [Edited on 5/9/2004 10:36:37 PM]

 • I think that is why you can't edit polls. It is a really good idea to not have people edit their polls. I'm glad Bungie thought ahead.

 • Hmmmmm. Interesting. I used to do that when I first started posting in the Star Wars Galaxies forums, while the game was still in development. I got it from a regular member called Jim Morrison (sp?). Any chance the same is true with you? Just my thoughts, Poocho :)

 • Oh, I get it now. No I don't . Hold on. Okay, lets assume that after a certain amount of time, people will know what the thread is about, even without viewing the first post. Therefore, editing one's own first post of the thread would not do anything, other than confuse people who are too lazy to check for the edited post time, and the respondants post time. But how would not editing one's own thread solve any post bumping problems?

 • Sometimes the thread-maker edits their post after people have replied to it. Then it just sort of screws up the conversation. So maybe Bungie should make it so you can only edit your posts, not your threads? Whud'ya think?

 • This is a truley good idea. Not only does this stop someone from bumping their own post (unless it was good enough to get at least one aknowlegement) but it will also draw attention to the edit post button, and put an end to double posting. There is never a good reason to double post. If you can't say what you have to say in 10,000 characters, I don't want to read it!

 • Thanks, Halo53. And to answer your question: I like putting people's name to which I refer to, in bold as respect and to show them that I'm talking to them or about them.

 • In response to Rewin's post, first off welcome to the forums (I see you are relatively new, about a month) 2nd, I am on a roll today. I think that is the second time I was agreed with and i can't remember the last time that happened on these forums. Oh yeah. 3rdly, Rewin also brings up a good point, which I didn't think of. 4thly, why was my name in bold? lol oh well just joking with you, I have never seen anyone put my name in bold :D

 • Well, say someone replied to thread-maker's post, but it pretty much ended the thread. Then the thread-maker has the option, again, to bump it with something un-useful. So it's pointless, in my opinion, to take away the reply button. Just notice that these people do it, and warn them.. like Halo53 said. I think he's got an idea there!

 • So you are saying no double posts? I don't think that is a good idea. DI made a post so long I had to break it into 2 different posts. Of course I quoted like 8 different people but it was really long and well thought out, not bumping or spam (in the 7th Column Council thread) I just think if someone bumps a thread they should be warned by a moderator/bungie employee that if they do it aagain, they would get a temporary ban from the forums. Maybe a day or to. Each time they do it the punishment gets worse until they are permanantley banned. Not all double posts are spam.

 • Yeah, Sigma's got it. Take away the reply button for someone's own individual post, not their whole thread. I'll give an example of what I'm talking about. [Edited on 5/9/2004 6:03:20 PM]

 • I think he's referring to not being able to reply to one's own post, not thred. For instance, take away my reply button on this thred until someone else replies to it, ect. While my post was a completely unstructured bundle of thoughts, I hope you get what I mean...:P

 • So what do we do when someone wants to reply to someone else's post in their thread?

 • Yeah, it's really annoying when people respond to their own posts.
