Lets Discuss: Video Game Stories

Good ol' VG narratives. Sometimes great, but mostly pretty meh. Why is it that games like Bioshock, RDR, Bastion, To the Moon, and many other games have great narratives that keep the player engrossed even after he or she has stopped playing? What do you enjoy in a VG story? What stands out for you? and what are some great examples of great story telling in Video Games?

 • As much as people won't believe me, Dynasty Warriors 7. Probably the most underrated Japanese game of recent years; can't really blame anyone though. Dynasty Warriors hasn't been that great for the last few years. Nevertheless getting through Dynasty Warriors 7 takes as long as about any other number of great, RPG-esque Western story-oriented games (50+ hours) and carries the same emotional payload with it. Tackling different morals and emotional themes in each of it's four campaigns. Omega Force really put some effort into DW finally. •
Posted by: DarkJet7 This thread needs more extra credits, but i'm too lazy to link anything - - - - - - I enjoy games that tell their story through gameplay/mechanics; my all time favorite game, Shadow of the Colossus is a perfect example of this. What i don't usually enjoy is games that tell their story through info dumps (aka, making us read entire books or watch giant cut scenes(although both can be made to work really well))
Ahh Extra Credits. Love those guys.

 • Right, my previous post wasn't that good. I like contributing as much as I can to threads like this. I strive to play games with outstanding storylines, I love them. Like I mentioned above, Planescape: Torment is one of the best stories ever told in a video game. I hate how all the great games with great stories are shadowed by average games with average gameplay. Let me list a few games that I know that have a great story, that usually fly under the radar. Shenmue Deus Ex Planescape: Torment Fallout 1 & 2 System Shock 2 I want every person in this thread, who values a good story in video games. To sit through the bad gameplay and dated graphics of Planescape and play it. Use the mods to fix whatever; bring it up a bit more to todays standards. But, play it. I urge you.

 • Metro 2033. The mystery kept me thinking about is throughout the game. Also, for others who like the game, the book is better. I stopped playing the game to read the book.

 • Breakdown on the original Xbox had the best story of any game I've ever played. Such a shame it was so underrated.

 • Alternate endings cause easy and cheap replayability. Unless you want to go on youtube or something and spoil yourself.

 • I'm still sore about Mass Effect 3's ending. I had like 6 or 7 other characters that I built during the first two games and I have no desire to beat the game again. ME3 was great, just ended badly. [Edited on 01.07.2013 11:36 PM PST]

 • As often they have deeper meanings or play out to strike a certain emotional part of the player - especially BioShock 1, the ending of that had me stuck, it made me play through it again and again I enjoy freedom of choice personally, that your decisions ultimately impact the ending of the game - I enjoyed all of the Mass Effect games for this, I know the ending wasn't what most people expected but for me it was the impact that you had throughout the games that mattered. The character development stands out the most for me, its amazing that you can get attached to a few pixels, watch them develop and then see what happens. For instance; Kat on Halo Reach; she was with you all the way through the game and then she is unexpectedly taken away from you in one really good cutscene - unbelievable A great example of story telling? - Bioshock - Mass Effect - Half Life - Halo to name a few [Edited on 01.07.2013 11:32 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: TRENT1221996 I've always enjoyed reading character origins.
Good characters with good believable backgrounds are great. I love it when games have more to the story then just the main game. Lore is very important to me. Knowing there is a world outside of what is going on in the game atm is very pleasing
