FIRST Robotics 2013 Game (Ultimate Ascent)

Hey fellow Floodians! So, anyone on or was on an FRC team and want to know the game for this year? Well, here it is! Click here to watch the demonstration video. It was a surprise, especially so with the pyramids. It'll be interesting to see what the 'bots look like this year, since dimension-wise, it's all based on the perimeter, diameter, and height of the 'bot. Not only that, but we are shooting Ultimate Frisbees. If you are on an FRC team, are you ready to lose some sleep? 'Cause I am! And, ready to do a ton of work! And, what do you think of the game? I used to be president of team 2134 a few years ago and plan on mentoring during this build season.
Yeah, it does. We'll see how it goes. I'm part of Team 2771, Code Red Robotics. We had some awesome ideas for climbing the pyramid. I wonder how teams will get the coloured discs into the pyramid goals. I know my team talked about dropping them in when climbing up it. But, I'm not exactly sure if we'll be able to hoist it up far enough. We'll see.
I expect the teams whose professional mentors do most of the design work will be hitting the pyramid goals. Our team is entirely student run so they'll more than likely be skipping the most difficult goals. One thing that always frustrated me was that there isn't a rule about how much help mentors can give...some teams are basically set up so that students just watch the mentors do all the work. They always have the best robots, and it's usually obvious which teams are "cheating", but nothing is ever done to even the field.
Yeah, I've seen some teams like that. For us, we try to have our team for the most part, student run. But, we have mentors to help with the design process, or other things. They're meant to help, just not do it themselves. You can't just have the mentors do all the work, since the students don't learn anything. Plus, it's good for students to fail, you learn more by failing than succeeding. So, it would be cool if your team would pursue the pyramid. They could learn a lot, they might fail, but it's more about learning and having a good time, rather than focusing on winning.

 • Team 88, TJ^2 reporting in. It's a better game than last year's, in my opinion.
