•
Posted by: steadman So many people here don't know how the professional world works. After a degree, you will not go straight to a six figure salary, you will not immediately get the job you want, most people don't go to a job related to their course, many people will do voluntary work, many people will travel, many people will freelance. A course in English Literature is not just useful to English teachers, it shows that you have an aptitude to the language and can decode messages very well. You are quite analytical. A course in Film and Television Production will show that you have some technical knowledge of a field as well as the ability for teamwork etc. A course is never just worth its face value. A course can change a person, give them more than what you'd expect.
Have you decided what to do after uni yet?

If I had a penny for every time I hear about someone wasting so much time and money only to achieve a piece of paper that isn't getting then any jobs I may just be able to pay off their student loans.
Yeah? All of them? So the engineers, lawyers, and doctors all graduate and just end up with a piece of paper? hahahahah
You noticed my little failsafe "Pretty much all of them"? But yeah they aren't guaranteed jobs either.

 • As somebody with a job that I love, I cannot agree with people saying English/Lit. The ability to write well is one of the most valuable job skills. Even, say, IT people need to submit reports and communicate problems and protocol effectively. It is really alarming to read adults' emails that are barely coherent.

 • I wouldn't know what the most useless degree is. It really depends on what you do with it. For example, I'm a psychology major. If I were to just get my Bachelors, I'd get no where, but if I were to go to grad school, I'd get a Ph.D and open up all career options for psychology. [Edited on 12.13.2012 2:24 PM PST]

 • Arguably the most useless degrees are entirely vocational ones that don't cater to in-demand jobs. They provide skills that are only transferrable to specific fields and leave you with very few options.

 • Majors like Psychology (me) and english are broad enough that they can be used effectively, but often used by people who have no idea what they are doing and end up with terrible jobs. Sure you can go for 4 years of psych graduate and become a counselor (if you go for your masters if not you have to be like an aid or a mental health technician") and make no money, or you can go into applied psych or experimental go to graduate school and have a better shot at landing a job. It's hard these days just to stick to one discipline, companies dont want that. They want people with multidisciplinary experience. Like me I studied clinical psych, decided that was hella boring, now im going for my masters ina computer science field related to psychology, called Human Factors. I still have a fear that I may not find anything but it's broad enough that I should have skillsets desriable somewhere. But you know whats really useless? Fine Arts. hurr i can draw good. Unless you are EXCELLENT like top 5% and do something like 3d modeling, its waste of tens of thousands of dollars just to finger paint. All those times I was writing research papers those clowns were outside drawing trees and houses and other nonsense. [Edited on 12.13.2012 1:34 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: A Good Troll
Posted by: davadude -Economics and economics studies, or whatever it's called near you (too many people doing it, too little jobs)
Dayum brah, throwing my major under the bus. I think you'll find Econ to have an extremely low unemployment rate in comparison to others. Useful website for those interested in finding more info on majors and unemployment/salary/salary growth/etc. I will say it is an urban job. If you want the best pay and employability, you have to work in an urban area. You probably aren't going to find an Econ job in the wheat fields of Kansas.
Guess I was wrong, thanks for the website! I was actually trying to aim towards the fact that right now, due to the global situation, economics will probably crash sometime soon once the hype dies down. It's like with the surgeons boom in Europe from five years ago, everyone became a surgeon due to a high demand... and then it crashed. Trust me, it's a major I have massive respect for, AGT!

 •
Posted by: MyNameIsCharlie Well, since our society values independent thought and creativity so much, I would have to say anything involved in Economics, Finance, Engineering or any Law or Pre-Law degree. Of those, probably the Engineering degrees, especially in software, would be the most worthless.
Software engineering worthless?! WHAT?!
