Why can't a user lock his or her own thread? It seems it might help when an OP's thread is derailed.
-
Bad idea. People would find ways to abuse it, and idiots would just lock as soon as someone disagrees.
-
I remember the answer was posted a while back. It's because Bungie.net gives certain users the ability to lock a thread via permissions. If you give one 'Member' the permission to lock a thread, then all members can. Or something like that anyway...
-
"You have no rights. Play nice." Now where have I heard that...
-
Threads do not "belong" to the OP. A user here has control over the content of his or her own posts, but not the thread in which they are posted. And that includes OPs. While users here frequently refer to "my thread," it's really a misnomer. It would be more correct to say "my OP" or "the thread I created." Don't let the colloqualism fool you into a sense of control. You cannot lock threads that you create for the same reason that you cannot edit other users' posts.

If i want to lock my thread, why shouldn't I, even if it is just because it isn't going my way?
When you open up your thoughts to the community, it becomes a community issue. You (anyone that isn't a mod) shouldn't have the right to silence someone just because you don't care what they have to say. Everyone should have their voice, even though sometimes I would agree they should be silenced.
If you want the discussion to continue, you can make another thread.
I don't get it.. why would you want to lock it in the first place then? [Edited on 12.07.2012 9:19 AM PST]
Posted by: xSapphire
Posted by: Make117 People would just lock their threads when they see too much opinions they don't like.
...And? Then the thread dies. What's the problem?
What's the point of making thread then, if you lock the thread when you start seeing different opinions? Forums are a place for discussion, this option would only limit that.

It'd be nice, but it makes sense why we can't. It's a way to control the flow/flood of threads.

I would think a lot of people would find it hilarious to keep locking and unlocking a thread. [Edited on 12.07.2012 5:08 AM PST]
Posted by: XxhargbeastxX Why can't a user lock his or her own thread? It seems it might help when an OP's thread is derailed.
1. Posts you create do not belong to you. 2. You cannot dictate what is or isn't allowed to be posted in a thread. 3. Locking your thread because of trolls and/or flaming would prevent further discussion related to the topic. The proper procedure (in some situations) would be for a moderator to warn or suspend the user(s) that violated the forum guidelines.
Posted by: Centauratron Can't the OP just request that a ninja lock the thread if it gets out of hand? I could be wrong, but I don't really think any of the mods are going to say "nope; let the trolls have their fun."
I've seen quite a few threads where it took the mods quite a while to respond.

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to. It would help instead of having to edit the name to "Please Lock" all of the time. Moar freedom is required.
-
Good idea. I wish I could lock some of my threads.
