The saddest thing in Halo

Real Quick: I've been playing Halo since 2001, and naturally as a child, I just thought of it as a pretty game with shooting. That was my mindset at age 11. As I matured however, I payed more attention to the story-line and became hooked with the Halo Universe. Thanks to the release of Halo CE Anniversary, we have had the honor of the terminals explaining more into detail about Halo. Now one terminal that really got to me was number 9; Death of Keyes. Saddest Halo Moment: The terminal for Halo CEA, The Death of Keyes, was one that really dug into me. As I look at other people who scoff at the people like me for actually feeling bad for a video game character's death, you have to wonder how cold-hearted you have to be in general not to care even a bit. In the terminal, we know that Cpt. Jacob Keyes was infected by the flood and was being tormented by it. Having his memories stripped from him, having the pain of becoming more like a flood creature, and potentially losing the whereabouts of Earth to the flood. I thought to myself, had that had been me, I would have compromised everything, been too weak. The fact that Jacob Keyes was determined, in spite of being tormented and killed slowly, to keep the flood far away from the human race is awe inspiring, and I wish Bungie would have done more with Keyes in a game. Discuss. Would you agree or do you have a different opinion, and if so what and why? [Edited on 10.25.2012 4:44 PM PDT]

 • For me the death of Noble 6 stood out the most. Having played Halo CE and read the Fall of Reach, the start of the last mission with the objective lighting up "Survive" really got to me because I knew what was coming. The environment and the music created such a somber atmosphere. I desperately tried to survive, hoping for a miracle to save Noble 6; That miracle never came. Noble 6 went down like a champion though. The speech at the end gave me goosebumps.

 • I see no reason, other than emotional reasoning, to preserve a species simply because it is my species. That wouldn't factor into it at all. It is something that I don't see questioned an awful lot in sci-fi and it is something to question in our own society: Are you fighting for just your nation, or are you fighting for something that transcends that, such as Human dignity, the sanctity of life, Justice, Human Rights, etc?

 • The final Cortana scene in Halo 4. That was goddamn sad. I didn't cry, but I thought about it for days. Nothing in Reach made me remotely sad (well, maybe the epilogue just for the music), and Johnson dying didn't really affect me even though I liked him.

 • @PISTOLSQUIRREL I got chill bumps reading that haha! Halo 4's story and dialog was brilliant. OT, if I had to do a top 5, it would look like this: 1. Cortana Halo 4 2. Keyes Terminal 3. Jorge (Make it count) 4. SGT. Johnson 5. Sam (Fall of Reach book) [Edited on 11.18.2012 11:14 AM PST]

 • Johnsons death was really moving. When you see the blank visor of the Chief looking at Johnson.... I can almost see the pain on the Chiefs face just through the way that helmet stared down. Noble Six' death was also pretty sad, just because it was so tragic and brave and stupid and gutsy and defiant.

 •
Posted by: katamariguy I was moved by Reach's teaser trailer, especially the part where you hear desperate servicemen radioing in on the increasingly hopeless situation. The music really underlined how futile the war was.
It is very sad. Its so hopeless its one of those situations where they would do ANYTHING to survive as a species, even if that meant fighting hopeless battles. And what came out of that War, a scared, desperate species willing to create wars and kill many other species to survive... its not really pretty. Kilo-5 makes me dislike Humanity's attitude.

 • So many good characters in the Halo universe died. Each ones death had a brutal impact on me. Jorge's death got me especially. Because he sacrificed his life in hope to save Reach, and Reach fell anyhow. SGT. Johnsons death got me too, I loved his dry sense of humour. Ah! Darnit... so many awesome characters dead >.<

In other words, if the Flood truly is a test, humanity, as it ir right now in the Haloverse, would fail.
Humanity hasn't finished it's test. Master Chief's encounter with the Flood is the beginning.

 • 1. Kurt's death 2. Cortana at end of Halo 4 (used to be Keyes) 3. Keyes terminal 4. 343 Guilty Spark terminal (where he basically starts going rampant and leaves his installation)

 • I originally read this in the Halo novel The Flood and it did really have a saddening effect even then. But I would have to say the saddest moments are the Spartan deaths to me. Especially Sam.

 • I agre OP. That terminal was really an eye opener to see what it was like to be infected. It took me back to the book, The Flood, when Jenkins is mutated into a combat form. I seriously felt bad for the guy and the fact that he just wanted to die so bad, really got me. I guess that's why he's one of my favorite characters. Jenkins overall story and Johnson's death were the saddest moments for me. Though I was quite sad for the chief.... ya know.. for losing that thing...

 • I'd have to agree with the OP that Keyes's death in Halo Anniversary, with the Terminal context and whatnot, was possibly the most poignant death. Though seeing Spark's slow descent into madness after the firing of the rings was also kinda striking. He's always this annoying little fairy prancing around and generally making things bad for the player, and then you realize that you're the first human interaction he's had in millenia upon millenia. Kinda depressing in retrospect.
