In the U.S. why is the school budget always cut first?

I swear, its like they don't want us to learn and get an education. I lived in California for the past 4-5 years, and while I went to one of the top 500 schools in the country (Adolfo Camarillo HS), when I moved to Virginia, I felt completely unprepared for it as the HS im going to is like one of the top 100 schools. Im not blaming it entirely on the school system, part of my un-prepardeness is my fault, I'll freely admit that, but my question still stands, why does it get cut first? •
Posted by: Godshatter Military is more important. You can't destroy a country by dropping smart kids on it.
I dunno, put enough scientists on it and I'm sure we could come up with some nuclear nerds.

 •
Posted by: crumpster212 Why don't they value it? A smarter population would help the country out.
As odd as it sounds, there are cultures in America that have a negative view towards education. It's more important to be part of the group than to succeed, or surpass the group. We just covered this in Teacher Education, incidentally.

 • It's because school budgets are left up to the counties and towns to pay for them, which don't have as much money to spend as the actual federal government.

 • All stereotypes aside, I think this is so because people know that Public schools need some work. I literally wanted to hurt myself after being in a junior high school for only 6 months.

 • The school system is already failing so we do not believe that any more money will help solve the problem. It is a self fulfilling prophecy. [Edited on 10.03.2012 6:04 PM PDT]
