With a network switch or a router, all the PCs involved just need a straight-through ethernet cable and connect directly to the switch. To go directly from one PC to another you will need a crossover ethernet cable. The difference between the two is how the wiring inside the cable is arranged. If you happen to have any old ethernet cable odds are it's straight through. Most crossover cables have tape wrapped around it and it is specifically written on them.

According to what I know, you can play a videogame with your friends through LAN without an internet access. All you have to have is a router and two ethernet crossover cables.
