These poor old forums....

These forums have grown emensily since I joined them, while I am happy to see them grow and prosper.......their being killed. The way they are divided up and the work the mods have done have helped to keep the spaming and flaming down to a minimal, but the number of users have gone way up and I think the mods are being over run. ATTENTION BUNGIE MEMBERS: What are you guys going to do to prevent the forums from turning into a mindless pile of poo that offers nothing to anybody because they are so pact and spamful? Please respond.

 • Although I am a relatively new member of Bungie.net, I can already feel the tension building up in the forums and in PM's. It doesn't make me angry to see people discriminate in this day and age, but things happen. I just get dissapointed in the youth today, my fellow peers and possobly co-workers. I mean if you don't read the rules, you will probibly get some kind of talking to in one way or another, whether it be a flame or a legendary "Moderator thereat/warning." If you just use common scense and just be cool about things then you will eventually get the vibe of things and fit right in. Being a Canadian I can pick up on this train of thought of mild but passionate, pacifismistic enthusiasm and productivity. With this way of life I have I think I havefit in pretty good, although it does make me want to go to more grammer classes. lol I think there should be auto mailed threats to users who are caught doing somthing wrong, i.e posting a topic which has been posted several times but just dosn't feel like searching for it, or flaming uncontrollably, you know stuff like that. And maybe go far enough as to not allow them back into Bungie.net, hopefully it doesn't get that far... I hope. As for what we the "intellectual" majority(actually now it's turning into more of a minority) of Bungie.net can do is contiue or persuit of greatness toword Bungie and help them as much as possible, via buying halo2 and other merchandise, keeping the peace in the forums and most importantly fill this place with enjoyment for the greater Bungie fan base. So lets get out there and show them who Bungie.net members should strive to be. Somehow I feel like a jedi or something. It must have been the speech. Jedi are cool right? •
Posted by: bctrainers These forums are from IdealBB and IdealScience. I believe there is a search function somewhere. Usually if its not here, then this board is heavially modified -or- it is disabled to conserve on bandwidth.
Although coded for the most part by Ideal Science, these forums aren't the IdealBB. They are actually a custom solution that is heavily based on the code for Ideal's upcoming IdealBB.NET product. The Search function is not here because it wasn't part of the original spec for the system. We felt it couldn't be done for this scale of forums given the time alotted. It will be added by the Ideal guys as part of the IdealBB.NET development, but it will take a while, given the sheer enormity of making an efficient AND effective search and archival system. Hopefully we'll see it before Halo 2 arrives, but search could be delayed farther than that if the initial effort doesn't stress test well.

 • I've experienced the same apathy for rules, thought, intelligence, and fellow members that you have, Stalin. For the most part it's limited to New Mombasa, but there have been instances in The Library and The Underground as well. What I find most frustrating is posting facts--and links to those facts--that I know to be true (well, if they're facts, they should be true, yes?) and having someone (the most recent incident involving flamechu) get belligerent and refuse to accept what they could, with a few clicks of their mouse, see to be true. On the other hand, coming to The Septagon and seeing threads like this or this, where intelligent and often humorous discourse occurs, is refreshing. It gives me hope that as the current members who act like they know everything (but obviously know less than that) grow older they will learn respect and the decent way to act on a public forum.

 • I just had a little experience which made me realise just how awful these forums can be at times. In New Mombasa there is a thread, about ILB. I went in there, posted my views (which, with hindsight, may have been incorrect) and that was that. Or so I thought. One reply read
I still say early release. EDIT:Stalin, you have no clue to what you're talking about so do us all a favor and shut up.
Now, I was wiling to let this slide. Flaming is something you get used to on NM. But, alas, this comment began to eat away at me, as acid eats away at wood. So, i PMed this little blighter, and asked him to be more respectful to his fellow user, and instead of flaming to make some sort of coherant arguement. Alas, the reply read something about being too lazy to think. I won't bore you with the rest of the conversation-For it is this comment that is important.
I am too lazy to think
Is this the answer? Pehaps some of the less.... respectful members problems stem from this..... Think about it. Too lazy to counter point someones arguement? Just flame them. Too lazy to find an old post? Post a new one on the same topic. Perhaps this laziness can be overcome-With some sort of cattle prod. EDIT:
I'm too lazy to read the rules so don't tell me to read them, because I won't
Exhibit B. Think that one speaks for itself, really. [Edited on 8/20/2004 10:51:47 AM]

 •
Posted by: Reiginko
Posted by: Recon Number 54 And the rest of us? The (allegedly sane and rational) members of the Bungie community, what can/should we do? Other than reporting silliness, not feeding the trolls, and remaining calm and patient....hmmmmm. Well, we could get naked and throw ice water on the new guys. But sooner or later someone would sue, or shoot. Either way, someone loses something.
You could also try to post some worthwhile threads and set a good example for the others. Or is that too far-fetched? - Reiginko
I'm trying my hardest... But any thread that doesn't involve something to do with Halo/proposed future Halo games/Halo weaponry seems to die quickly... I recently posted a thread about Marathon gaming and things people have done, to try and promote some friendly rivalry or something... I got 2 replies... On the rest of things... I'm doing my best to shut down the spammers and keep people on topic... I have made many break throughs in the "Introduce Yourself" thread where several people decide to advertise other threads or pick fights... However I am finding it harder and harder to stop myself from snapping at people coming into threads and screaming 'Halo' or abusing people for not worshipping Halo as a new religion... I am currently changing my sig to include some kind of disclaimer about not being responsible for shooting red-cordial crazed 13 yr olds on sight...

Let's see. *flips pages* What weapons do you want to see in Halo 2? *flip* I know the real meaning of ILuvBees *heavy flip* What is the name of your XBox? *flip* How do you CHANGE the name of your XBox? *flip* I've heard about this "Marathon" thingie, is it cool? *flip* Oh, sorry, wrong list.
Posted by: Reiginko You could also try to post some worthwhile threads and set a good example for the others. Or is that too far-fetched? - Reiginko
Sorry. I of course meant that we post worthwhile topics and remain contributing members of the community. I negelected to mention it... because it's just such a part of who we already are? Please respond.
In case you don't get an "official" response (but you just as easily might). Bungie is painfully aware of the increased quantity and decreased quality of the overall forum experience. Unfortunately, they (as a company) are a bit wrapped up in some other pressing projects at the moment. You know how deadlines can be.... There was a great discussion on this very subject here. Bungie basically opened up the floor for ideas and suggestions as well as asking fourm-goers their opinion about potential methods for improving the Forums. It was great! We laughed, we cried, it became a part of us all. The basic upshot is that the majority of Bungie is busy making Halo 2 as kickass as possible and trying not to have to resort to the "were waiting on the boxes" excuses. (I think that the fans have caught on to that one by now). Achronos and his team are working hard to improve the forums, but are also very focused on updating and bringing the re-worked 7th Column online. Both the "Cool tools for Mods" and the "Bungie Karma-base" are pending. The mods are giving Bungie and the community far more than our money's worth of hard work in the forums. While spammers, flooders, flamers, lamers, and all-around kiddies are rampant, they still manage to keep it all from completely boiling over. And the rest of us? The (allegedly sane and rational) members of the Bungie community, what can/should we do? Other than reporting silliness, not feeding the trolls, and remaining calm and patient....hmmmmm. Well, we could get naked and throw ice water on the new guys. But sooner or later someone would sue, or shoot. Either way, someone loses something. [Edited on 8/19/2004 9:40:53 PM]
