Is Pokemon set in a post apocalypse?

T4R Seriously. If you watch the beginning of the anime, it seems as if the understanding of Pokemon is very limited. It ever appears as if they are some what new. Yet, the technology is more advanced than today's standards. did something happen? Perhaps there was a nuclear war that caused pokemon to mutate. Maybe Pokemon recently arrived from another planet. Either way, I get the vibe that they weren't always there.

 • ther seems to be a lack of drugs also in the pokemon world and woman control the enforcement services. just think after a night out of drinking you would get the yobs throwing pokeballs at the person they just beat up. would a pokeball work on another trainer? what distinguishes a person from a pokemon hmm [Edited on 09.15.2011 1:35 AM PDT]

 • I would actually reason that scientific understanding of the creatures among commoners is lacking -- they use the technology, but do not care how it works. However, there are several entities -- Silph Co. and their Master Ball, for example -- that actively develop and innovate such technology. Of course, it is clear that the world's history is considerably different from that of the real world. Lt. Surge is an American war veteran in the PokeUniverse, yet he doesn't appear to be all that old. The entity that America fought against isn't identified, and it is known that Pokemon were used in warfare (or at least, his were). So though there has been recent violent conflict, the world is by no means post-apocalyptic. BTW given that fact -- the usage of Pokemon and their supernatural abilities in brutal, to-the-death warfare -- it is surprising that the entire planet on which the Pokemon series takes place isn't a charred husk. • Well there's no sense in the plot because it isn't supposed to have a sense; it's like asking "Why are we here?".

 •
Posted by: SMota14 Dude... this is a kid's show.
They said that about the Smurfs. Supposedly (from an essay in a college text book) they were supposed to destroy American capitalist society from the inside out. It was supposed to teach kids communist ideals like sharing things and the like. I guess the bad guy was a symbol for American capitalism. His cat symbolized the fat cats benefiting from others' hard work.

 • all the pokemon are mutated toddlers and adults most skipping mid childhood when they evolve. think of pikachu that needs a stone to evolve as a criminal that can only change its ways when someone interfers

 • Your eyes no, but for the people making it yes. The target audience is children not teens or adults. They are going to keep making the same thing over and over to appeal to a new generation of kids.
Posted by: Omnipotent Cube So, you are saying that the same kind of thing over and over is better than adding on.
•
Posted by: Omnipotent Cube So, you are saying that the same kind of thing over and over is better than adding on.
Yes. Its main fan-base is children, they don't need to add anything complex, and, with the current rate of "expansion", meaning the amount of Pokémon being added, the only back-story would probably be excessively violent.

 • So, you are saying that the same kind of thing over and over is better than adding on. Lets do a pokemon prequel where you play in England!

 • Firstly, the show is primarily made for children, many of whom probably won't care about the back-story. Secondly, if they did have a more historical approach to the series and the games, it would take away from the experience of learning more things as you go. It's probably better with no background.

 • Adding no back story keeps from grounding people in the series. I want to know a darker version.

 • Hmm maybe, but they say that people even knew them in ancient time in the anime, manga, and games, so it's highly doubtful.
