Bungie....you better issue an apology/Statement!

Hey guys. Just to let you know that due to some small message in (or thought to be in) your new trailer that apparantly reads "Wheres Maddie?" small but growing numbers of halo fanboys are posting stuff on websites related to the disapperance of a kid in the UK named Madaline McCann. Now i dont know how well you know the UK press....but they can be, say...reactionary at best. Especially about Maddie. All it would take is a few more posts and you can be sure you'll end up in a few of the red tops....and i assure you it wont be favourable to the Bungie cause. They love a good anti-gaming story. You may want to issue a statement to people telling them to calm down before the press get hold of it. About 24 hours i reckon. Just thought i'd warn you :) P.s Ask Frankie if you want to know more about the British press...i'm sure he's got some horror stories..

 •
Posted by: Piercingtiger I can understand the confusion. If you type in the actual words, "Maddie, where are you?" into google, it goes to a Maddie Mccann website. I'm very sure that it wasn't intended. Either way, it's unfortunate.
Agreed. The problem is not with bungie it is with the US media. Having spent time living in the US and europe (im from the uk btw and am living there atm) i have seen how closed the US media is. It is a terrible thing. In my time in the US i heard very little of what was happening in the rest of the world and what i did hear was short and often very incorrect. Look at many of the posts in this thread from people asking what its all about. This has caused confusion in this thread as people from the Uk and the rest of europe have a very open meida and get far more world wide news so they expect people from the US to have the same. IMO bungie should issue a short statement to say no offence was meant and it is simply an unfortunate coincidence even if its just to cover there own backs. The UK media tho being open has some very powerful but twisted tabloid news papers that have made a fortune from the maddie case and have recently run out of stuff to write. For them this may be big money. If bungie arnt worried about bad press thats fine but it would make sence just to cover themselves.

 •
Posted by: elmicker I'm not overly bothered by the reference, whether intended or not. I'm simply amazed a marketing team would allow it to go ahead. Marketing is and always has been bungie's strongest point.
There's nothing to spoil any marketing here. In fact, it will get them MORE fans.
You can keep saying it all you like but it's questionable. We're up to 13 pages now, and there's quite a bit more on other forums.
Who here is outraged? You're the person saying that "people" will be outraged.
The worms for example, could include things like they're actually intending for the connection to be made for the purposes of publicity in europe (bungie have traditionally done poorly there),
What?
or they realised the connection and didn't see any problem with the use of the name in that particular context, with those specific words ("where are you maddy" was literally sobbed out by the mother of madeleine mccann on international tv as she cried her heart out)
It's a video game company based in America releasing a trailer for a video game that hasn't come out yet. You really think they will print that? It simply wouldn't be worth the money. ALERT THE INTERNET!
Either one, as i say, is either tremendously bad form or very poor work.
Point me to an article, or you're just proving that you are making stuff up as you go along. The bottom line is that you haven't linked any article in any tabloid about this. None. Zero.

 •
Posted by: elmicker
Posted by: zManWithaPlan ...they had it for a few frames, in a random, minute long, teaser trailer...
This is a viral marketing campaign. We had screen grabs and analyses of every single little thing in that trailer online within 10 minutes. You cannot brush something off as being in "for a few frames" because it's the things that are in for a few frames that they want us to notice. It's already been confirmed by lukems that "maddie" is a character, and as they've been mentioned by name theyre probably going to have a siginificant role to play. Our finding it was not a mistake, so it was obviously planned by the marketing team. The marketing team then ignoring/being unaware of the potential connections to this strategy simply sadden me, because they're either lying or their quality has dropped so low to the point that they no longer even bother googling. Either one is a major disappointment.
I am amazed that you think that your personal conclusions of malice, conspiracy, forethought or feelings of disappointment are relevant. It is a name. A word. The fact that a percentage of the global population can make an immediate connection between the use of a name in fiction and a real life incident that involves the name is (to me) an interesting, but non-relevant point. The fact that someone can take the linking, project in an intent, or a deliberate lack of sensitivity, and then find error, fault or malice.... well, it just goes to show me that not only does it take all kinds to make up the world, but there are all kinds in the world. The name is a name. Its use was its use. The coincidence is a coincidence. And the harm.... the harm is that people are running around pointing fingers, clucking tongues, and making absurd allegations rather than moving on and getting back to either being concerned for a missing girl or being excited about an advertisement for a video game.

 • Jeez I feel like I lost a few brain cells after this. next we will say a game can't have the name jack in it because someone who is a far distant relative of one of the victims of Jack The Ripper might get offended.

None at all.
Did I mention anything about Bungie breaking laws? No I didn't. Look you're American I don't expect you to understand properly (because its a UK case) so you ask why it will p!ss people off? The "Maddie" case had millions put into it, lots of time and effort and was probably the biggest thing in europe to date. It almost got more attention than the London bombings for christ sake. Its just disrespectful for people who took this case to heart and feel sorry for the little girl. Yes bungie did not mean the link the two things, it was an accident but none the less its going to upset people for what it is and attract alot of attention wether we like it or not.
You weren't clear in your post. I was responding to that re: law. Again, all I'm seeing is, "A lot of people were saddened by Maddie's loss". I'm not seeing where the outrage is. There's no slander, no questionable language, no references to child kidnapping in that trailer. What is there to be outraged about?

 •
Posted by: Cocomaan
Posted by: GUNSMOKEPHO3NIX
Posted by: lukems As always, all of the characters in our games are fictional. Any similarities between real life and the characters in our games are purely coincidental.
that will protect you from legal trouble, it wont stop some people from gettin pissed off.
What kind of legal trouble could they possibly get into? And for what reason would anyone get pissed off at this?
\ None, Bungie did nothing wrong. And all these people are being pansys because these people dont have enough of a life themselves, they feel like they must inject their feelings into other peopleise lives and ideas I didnt think about a little girl when i saw the game. I thought of a game character and if it could be another spartan or a spartan 2 You should be offended if someone makes a game like "Maddies Ultimate Hide and Seek", not a passing reference to a game character...

 • This is just another example of people not having much to blog about, so, when they see some vague reference they hop onto their computers & start posting -blam!- like this. This game is FICTION. If you read any disclaimer on any game they usually mention that any names are fictional & any reference to a real name is coincidence.
