Why we replay stories/strikes/raids/quests

So, I was reading the latest issue of Game Informer this morning and ran across two quotes that I found interesting: (My commentary below the quotes.) The first is from Luke Smith, lead designer, on how the frustrating raid loot drops have also driven Bungie's folks crazy:
I know personally how it feels to go one week where all three of my guys get shards and just feel bad about that. We are all that player who can be frustrated by that, so when we're talking internally about stuff that drives us crazy, alot of it is the same stuff that drives the fans crazy. A bunch of us are playing the game silently right beside them. We're living in the complaints. I wish this was better. In Dark Below, we're going to take some steps to do that with the armor and rewards. I'm optimistic that it's going to be closer. I'm not optimistic that we're going to get it right. We're continuing to learn.
This quote is from Tyson Green, Bungie lead designer, on why Bungie is hesitant to tweak loot drops too much:
We're using some of the game's systems more intelligently in the raid. Those are going to smooth out the dry spells and, "Really?" moments. Watching the first month of Vault of Glass completions, we thought: "Of course, we have to improve that." I think it's going to be quite a bit better. Part of me hopes that we didn't overcorrect. I don't want people saying, "I ran it three times and got everything I wanted. Goodbye. I no longer want to do this activity because I already got everything I want from it." Raiding in Destiny is some of what makes Destiny the social game we always wanted it to be. I hope we haven't made anything in the Dark Below that hurts that. I hope that what we've changed will give people a less frustrating experience.
I think they're worried over nothing. Have they seen the numbers on the replay for the raids? People aren't running the raid 20, 30, 40+ times because they didn't get the gear they wanted, they're doing it for the same reason I still run the stories - to help other players through them! 💕 Without the folks who selflessly run the Raids over and over again, I'd probably never have a shot at it due to my weird gaming schedule. I typically travel alot for work - usually only home Saturday and Sunday. (I am off right now, but have been dealing with a gravely ill kitty cat. 😿) I game the opposite hours of most raiding parties (making sites like this and destinylfg very cool tools). I can't stress enough how kind it is for people to offer to take newbie raider me with them time and time again! 💋 Folks raid because it's fun, social and they can mentor the next "class" of raiders.🌟 I believe that a majority aren't in it for JUST the gear. Even if it took 3 raids to get everything, people would keep raiding. It wouldn't matter. Thoughts? -Bella
