I have posted this before and wanted to post it again. I think ALL weapons and armor should have an upgrade path to keep up with current Legendary attack/defense levels. I have several guns and armor, some even rares, from prior to the dark below that I would prefer over the current offerings. The Necrochasm is a perfect example of a common (husk of the pit) that can eventually can be upgraded to legendary, then exotic. Even old exotic gear can be upgraded to new levels. Why not old legendary, rare, or raid gear? You want to see variety in players? This would do it. Please consider the possibilities.
