Let's talk about Missions, and why they're boring.

First off, let me preface this by saying I really enjoy playing Destiny. It's a solid shooter, with exceptional gunplay and a diverse selection of weapons and armor. When I say "diverse", I don't mean compared to games like Borderlands. Borderlands has pseudo-randomly generated guns, Destiny does not. Apples and oranges, people. Now, here's where Destiny really starts to dull its edge: Mission nodes. I have a level 31 Hunter, a level 29 Titan, and a level 16 Warlock. When I created my Warlock recently, I felt like I was being punished. Going through the story mode felt repetitive and needless. "These are all the same missions I've run over and over," I thought to myself. Now, why are they dull, and how can they be more rewarding? It is important to note that the Dailies are intended to keep you coming back. They give you rewards, and mix up the experience for you. They give you interesting modifiers that keep you checking back each day to see what's on offer. Well, they should. They don't. Take today's mission, for example. Heroic and Lightswitch. These modifiers are uninteresting at best. They really don't change how I play through the mission, and they don't really change the rewards, either. They feel static, repetitive, and uninspired. Just like rerunning other missions. Bounties have a similar problem. People keep hold of checkpoints throughout missions, in order to make completing mission-specific bounties as painless as possible. This isn't people wanting a free ride; this is people wanting a fun ride. They're not getting it, so they make it as quick as possible so that they can get back to doing whatever it is they actually enjoy about Destiny (spoiler: It isn't replaying missions.) So, here we are, with boring, pseudo-dynamic missions that feel overplayed and repetitive. (Is "repetitive" sinking in yet?) How do we solve this problem? It's a three-fold solution. Step one: Add more modifiers, and allow us to choose from a pool of modifiers in order to change up the gameplay and make old missions interesting again. You can even keep unique modifiers specific to dailies, if you still want to inspire incentive for daily play. (Hint: You don't have to if the missions become fun.) Step two: Scale rewards accordingly. Did I just turn on more modifiers than a Nightfall? Give me good loot! I don't want nothing for my effort. If I've already done these missions on two characters, make the process much quicker on my third, if I'm willing to turn up the difficulty to max. I don't just mean artificial difficulty (level difference), I mean mechanical difficulty. Step three: Add bounties which require us to finish levels with a certain modifier weight. That means, maybe I need to do "A Stranger's Call" with three difficult modifiers, in exchange for 150 reputation. That's all for now. You guys at Bungie have a solid foundation, and huge potential, but you need to put fun first. Missions aren't fun, but they easily could be.
