IGN Review of "The Dark Below" DLC

From the article: "Let’s get this right out of the way: the new raid, Crota’s End, is the best, and perhaps only reason to purchase The Dark Below. Just as the Vault of Glass raid did for the core Destiny experience, Crota’s End introduces objective-based gameplay that’s more interesting and varied than anything else you’ll find in this add-on. It’s an infuriating peek at the excellent game Destiny could be – provided that you have five friends with level 28 characters you can round up via text message or phone (seeing as there still isn’t any raid matchmaking). That inconvenience alone is frustrating enough, but it’s compounded by how little there is to do in The Dark Below aside from the new raid. I blazed through the three story missions and the one new strike in under two hours, and in that time, I saw barely anything substantial that I hadn’t seen in Destiny before. A strong sensation of déjà vu crept in as I tore through Earth and moon areas I’ve visited and revisited countless times since Destiny’s initial launch. The strike mission felt particularly samey, lacking the extra challenge and sense of urgency that make the original group of strikes my go-to grinding activity. Also disappointing is how The Dark Below fails to flesh out Destiny’s anemic story content. There was an opportunity here to take a more active approach to storytelling, but developer Bungie passes on it, opting to stick with expository dumps before and after missions to inform us why we should care about the things we’re about to shoot. It didn’t work for the core game, and it doesn’t work here either. In the time it’s taken me to write this much, I’ve already forgotten what I did or why I did it. Sure, it’s a new voice feeding us the story, but that doesn’t make what’s being said any more interesting."

  • Really? Don't trust IGN for shit. They rate CoD 10/10 every year and give good games crap ratings. Don't ever trust what those idiots say.

  • And yet they continue to praise COD. The same game with new maps year after year with less content than Destiny

    • Overheard at Bungie: "I know, let's handicap the players to the point of disability and make all previous gear ineffective." "Not bad, but you forgot to make it as tedious as possible to upgrade previously obtained exotics." "I like your style, but what about the story?" "LOL!"

      • 6/10 is WAYYYYY too generous. 2/10 is the most I would give it...seriously common, the full actual $60 game got a 6/10 so why would this 'dlc' get the same score? It shouldn't, so I'm free to assume the rating got bought out with some portion of Destinys massive budget lol

        • Bungie's approach to Destiny is bizarre. Its like a company like McDonalds sitting down and saying "Lets fill every burger with pickles and anchovies because thats how we want people to eat them", even though the vast majority of their customer base has told them they dont like it. I've never seen a developer work so hard to disappoint and frustrate their customers. Its as if they want the game to fail miserably in year 1 of it's 10 year plan.

          • Since the dlc drop and the new weapons and armor from the vanguard are switched will we ever get the chance to buy the original armor again?

That's one of the most biased reviews I've ever read. Truth is activision regulates dlc as they technically own this game, to a point. Now look at cod "expAnsions" 3/maybe 4 maps and a gun (IF YOURE LUCKY) they've been dropping those bare ass shit dlcs for years so ign up and wants to attack destiny? Tbh I think the whole world is just finally realizing dlc is a bullshit mechanic to make a 60 game worth 100-120-140$ game. And no one likes that, no one. But they are finally growing balls so they attack destiny. One if the hottest games out right now. Now keep in mind that they at ign are RETARDED. Because eris morn is vital to experience certain things such as the "the nechrochasm" but yes the dlc is bare, very bare. But you can't name a single 20$ dlc for call of duty that was bigger, because there never was. Activision is too used to milking the -blam!-ing shit out of games. A raid About 6-7 new exotics 4-5 new missions due to the "urn of sacrifice" About 20 new guns (crucible and vangaurd) A new strike New tower vendor Now lmfao let's look at the countless cod "expansions -blam!-ers have been dropping pretty pennies on silently and obliviously for years. 3 MAYBE 4 maps. (Zombies and extinction included) And if you're REALLLLY -blam!-ING LUCKY a gun. So let's be realistic. Destiny does better, but NO FPS DOES ENOUGH.

              • It's plain to see that the truly talented Bungie members either left or were fired. Those running Bungie now put screwing over their players as their biggest priority. No Story, No Vision, Lies upon Lies as to how Expansive, Mysterious and Enthralling Destiny would be. Destiny has a Mad-Lib produced plot, Brain Dead Enemy AI, Zero Surprises, just Endless Repetition. It has the most Boring and Dead game worlds ever encountered. What a GD waste. No way is Destiny gonna last 10 years in this appalling state! I'd say Destiny 2 actually getting made is a long-shot. Players have good reason to feel betrayed and let down by Destiny. Bungies former stellar reputation has been demolished, never again will pre-order or buy a Bungie game without giving reviewers time to find out how awful it is.

I couldn't agree more with this article I left for an indefinite break from Destiny because of the issues listed in this article, levelling the field of progression for high level players from the launch game, and the numerous examples of cheap attempts at extending play time. I want Destiny to be great. I want to come back. But Bungie really needs to address all of these issues before I'll consider it.

                      • I love this game i have dumped my free time into this game and am enjoying the raid and the new equipment. However this dlc was a total joke. 6.0 is still too high a number.

                        • It is so true and even worse.. I wonder what the guys at bungie think when reading these reviews.. Are they disappointed themselves? Don't think so.. They probably drink their coffee and giggle about the dumb gamers spending money and a hell of a lot time for destiny. Bungie should realize that they are loosing their fan base. Judging from what I've seen so far, I will abandon the whole destiny project including future dlc and destiny 2. Bungie had lots of time to react, to confront with the negative reviews and community issues from day 1 - they did nothing but making it worse. If you ask me, bungie is not interested in making their customers happy at all. Why so? Easy, we already paid so why bother about criticism?

                          • I only play 2 maybe 3 times a week. This game is perfect for me. I can jump in do some bounties, and jump out. I don't care about maxing everything out. I just enjoy meeting random people and shooting things. I've started using the forums more, and honestly I meet a lot of cool people. IF I played 4-8 hours a day and put my life into this game, I would be disappointed, but as a casual who actually does other things with my life... I still enjoy it.
