Polygon's Opinion on Dark Below

http://www.polygon.com/2014/12/15/7393695/destiny-dark-below-punishing-hardcore
That means that the more exotics you collected and upgraded prior to The Dark Below, the more progress you'll lose. The system actually punishes players proportionately to their dedication to the game, and it's the stupidest thing I've ever seen a major game developer do to its community.
That says it all. Only the mentally challenged staff at Bungie can think of this.

  • To the WoW/MMO Bungie defenders out there coming back with the "Gear resets happen in MMO's..get used to it!" 1. Tier/PVP seasons with new gear happen in WoW every 6-10 months on average. NOT 12 WEEKS 2. Those in say, Tier 15 Normal or Heroic Gear, they can progress nicely picking up gear from Tier 16 without having to buy any vendor items! (I'm using Warcraft terms with raid tiers to those who don't know) Bungie royally screwed up and their silence is a thumb in the eye to all of us who are hoping/wishing this game was treated better than a woman on a date with Bill Cosby!

    • I do agree with the sentiment that this article is stating. For someone who has three different characters and numerous exotics I have to make decisions on which to upgrade and which to shard. It did feel like a new game with the new currency system, new missions, and the new raid but that novelty wears out after a few days. This is primarily due to the fact that you have to grind to get your favourite weapons and gears up to par again after upgrading it at a huge price. I do appreciate that the exotics can be brought into the expansion universe even though at a very steep price. It is extremely disheartening especially if you expect me to do this all over again when the new expansion drops in a few months time. There needs to be a better system for this. This game doesn't need more grind, it needs more story and character development. However the one thing that I felt you got right was in one of Eris' missions where there is Thrall that needs to be disturbed in the corner to start the encounter was a brilliant move. As someone who comes from RPGs this feels right, I'm used to checking every corner of the map for loot and new missions. The person in my fireteam at the time nearly missed it altogether, it was good to feel rewarded to be thorough in checking the space you play in and there are a lot of spaces to explore in the Destiny universe. I think that Destiny could learn a lot from how RPGs set up their missions and quests because there is a lot of grinding in RPG but they supply a variety of tasks and quests to keep the players from being bored and feel like they're more powerful/progressing. The urn of sacrifice end mission was a good example of variety, some sparrow races would also be nice, but hey you're supposed to be the experts. It just feel that this iteration of Destiny is really shallow, it has great skin and solid bones in the way the worlds and characters are so beautiful and the gameplay experience is quite solid. However there's no meat on the bones here, in terms of the depth of the story and variety of activity in a game where you have to invest a lot of time in compared to something like an RPG. The changes brought in the expansion gives me some hope and I do hope that this won't be crushed in the future. Because if I have to grind like an idiot for my gears again, mindlessly shooting at things without knowing the plot and reasoning behind everything i would really give up on this game. The raid is excellent in my opinion, the raid economy is fine with me. However it's annoying that the exotics from the Vault of Glass still has the old stats. Get it right folks, don't punish your hardcore players or we will move on. Happy holidays

    • The thing that really pushed me away is when I just two days ago FINALLY got the shards to upgrade my Dead Orbit robes.... Just to find out that the same set of robes new from the vendor are better. I've been grinding on those robes for so long, now I would have to do it all over. Naaaah. I'm good. The only reason I hop on anymore is to help my buddy out with the weekly. Even this Friday, the only reason I'll be getting on is to let my buddy know what Xur has to offer because he's going to be out of town for a week.

    • "Oh no, the gear I've accumulated through the game's first three months of life won't remain the best gear through multiple DLCs! Why is this happening?!" That's the text of the Polygon article translated from douchbag into plain english. It was a stupid argument when that egomaniac made it, and it's a stupid argument now that you're regurgitating it. The reward system is not based on performance or "dedication"; it's based on luck. So you were lucky to get them in the first place, and now you're unlucky to have to upgrade them. It all evens out in the end. Stop acting like the game owes you something just because you play more than other people.

      • Terrible article for several reasons. First off, the previous Raid gear is not useless. The weapons are still viable because of their abilities and elements, especially in the primary slot, the same for the armor. Second- It is going to take a very long time to replace everything due to the 100 Mark limit. So you are still going to be using your previous gear for quite some time. Third- The New raid isn't the only place to get radiant materials, you can also buy them from Eris using Blackwax Idols (which are very easy to come by) Fourth- The Exotic upgrade system is great because it allows all the exotics to remain top tier. Also you won't be upgrading everything. The author doesn't take into consideration that you will be finding the old exotics in engrams, chests, and as rewards. So chances are you won't be upgrading all of them. And speaking from somone who had all the Vanilla Exotics the only ones I am going to upgrade are my favorites. Fifth- As far as re-leveling goes. It is not hard to do anymore. With all the bounties we have access too, Vanguard, Crucible, Crota's and even Iron Banner. You can max an item's XP rather quickly. Now that they made most of the materials easy to obtain it is no longer about luck, just time. That's all I have to say on the matter. I really don't understand where people are coming from here. You know what type of game this is. I don't get how people though that are new level cap was going to happen and we wouldn't have to work at becoming top tier again. It's as if they expected all of our weapons and armor to automatically upgrade without have to put in the effort.

        • There are too many valid points in this article for me to be comfortable with the purchase of this game. Bungie has made me a sad panda with $60 worth of buyers remorse.

          • This article had me laughing so hard. This guy is Queen of the Crybabies. And it is funny how he has so many drones following him like some messiah. This dude is such a nerd that he actually did the "math" on how much you have to do to get what. First off, that 1200 bounties to get enough XP to fully upgrade the new exotic weapons is BS. I got my new Hard Light last Thursday. Between my full time job, spending time with my family and spending time with my girlfriend, I have between 3-4 hours a day to put into Destiny. There is no way in hell I could do 1200 bounties in that amount of time. Yet I am up to the final upgrade circle. That guy pulled 1200 straight out of his ass and the crybaby clan ate it all up. This guy, like many forum posters are in tears because now you have to put in work to be at a high level. You want shards to fall out of the sky. You want a better version of the exotic gun to be maxed out and handed to you. You don't want to have to do the raid to level up your raid gear. It is a basic RPG mechanic that your gear and guns, no matter how exotic they are or how much work you put into them, will get replaced by better gear as you level up. That is the point. You didn't 't cry when your level 9 chest piece got replaced by a level 12 chest piece. Where were the post about having to upgrade a chest piece all over again then? If you are smart about it, you can minimize the grind and still get what you want. You think Destiny is grindy? Remember killing level 2 wolves for hours unend in WOW? Or standing in front of the loot cave for hours? Play Warframe for a week and you will see that Destiny's grind is completely manageable. Lastly, I just wanna point out that the first word you see just before the article is "OPINION". It is right there in big fonts yet a lot of ppl seem to have read past that and saw this as fact even though he clearly uses bogus numbers. They are praising him because they are mad about a video game. I know many of you disagree with my opinion on Queen Crybaby's article and that's fine. I respect that. If you have an intelligent rebuttal, please share. Otherwise, please keep all immature replies to yourself. Have a nice day.

            • I love this game.. However, I have to agree with the portion regarding radiant materials. They should be obtainable outside of the raid or nerfed. Getting a handful a week won't allow you to fully upgrade hardly any of your raid gear/weapons. Sorry, I'm not one of those people that has three hunters and can share a piece of gear across all. I'm not a huge fan of the exotic upgrade process either, but it's not terrible. Just raise the glimmer cap or get rid of the glimmer requirement so I can exchange my stuff already. Lastly, I would love to see the VOG weapons cap raised to the vanguard/vendor standard. They are still usable now, but will they be after the next DLC? A 300 level weapon in a, presumably, level 34 nightfall? I just don't want them to become useless, along with the VOG raid itself. I don't think the DLC is as broken as Polygon suggests, but there are certainly some logical points made about the direction Bungie is going and proper course correction.

            • I put up a post on compromises the developers could make with the community. I completely agree it's dirty to reset exotics and throw away 2-3 months of game time. Like my post points out I have seven pieces of exotics I use on a daily basis and gained a new one from the raid. So when will I have the time to re-level the old ones which I like for nightfalls, and then max out the new ones. I thought the point of an MMO is the grab as much high end gear, max it out, and make it rain with them. http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/85130157/0/0

And might I point out the first word that pops up after the title? (It's in the top left corner of the image) OPINION.

You don't lose any progress because when you trade them in they're stronger out the box and upgrade quicker.

                    • I completely agree. So much for an exotic weapon actually being useful. Whoever's idea it was to make the player restart the guns must be pretty stupid. Why not just add more damage upgrades to current exotics? Just have the first new upgrade cost another exotic shard and your problem would've been solved.
