Does demo progress transfer to main game
I'm thinking download the demo, get the husk of the pit (seems to be demo only currently), hop on my disc copy, snag HOTP and transfer it to my level 30.

Yes it does. You basically have the full game just in trail mode. So the purchase just unlocks full game content and you continue where you left off! If you buy, welcome to destiny!
