I've seen a lot of people compare Destiny's reset to expansions in other MMORPGs, and guess what? They're wrong!
The first difference is that in Destiny you directly level up your gear. For exotics, this takes a lot of time and attaches you to that gear. It's like creating your own gear in WOW.
Second, no other game has made an expansion and made better gear immediately available to everyone. In other games, you still had to go through the original parts (or new low level parts) and work just as hard to get to the top. Those who were at the top before the expansion knew that all their efforts were worth it because they needed to do that work to get that gear so that they could get the better gear for the expansion. They couldn't just start over and go to a vendor to buy gear that was better than their old top tier great.
Together, these two aspects make you feel as though everything you've done has been worthless, and you're no longer attached to the game.
And no, this isn't a rant. It's an explanation of the psychology behind the phenomenon.
