Ok so I have what I think is a great idea to actually give the Factions a better purpose. So as we all know the factions don't even give you level 30 armor and anyone can get guns from engrams and or random rewards. So are they that special? In my opinion, not now. So here is what I think.
Step 1: Initiation: so first off I don't think it should be as easy as spending some glimmer to get into the factions. I think you need to show some skill and some determination. So to start off I think you have to pay for "Faction Bounties " and complete maybe 5-10 to even be able to buy the faction class items. That way you have to put in some effort to get in and show some sort of skill. But after you buy the class item for the faction it's not that simple after that.
Step 2: Learning the Ways: so next I don't think you should have to use crucible marks and regular bounties for the factions. They should have their own " Faction bounties and Faction Marks" to show that you can only spend the in the factions and only get xp for the factions. That way you show more dedication towards the faction.
Step 3: Get your rewards and become the Master: after all that you should actually get some use full stuff. But not at an easy cost. I've came up with a system for what the factions should give you.
Armor: 2 sets of each beginner, novice, and Master pieces.
Beginner: 50-150 marks per piece
Novice: 75-175 marks per piece
Master: 100-200 marks per piece
Now to weapons:
All the weapons are open to all ranks expect for the exotics, there should be maybe 1-3 special faction only exotics.
Normal weapons: 75-175 marks
Exotic weapons: 200 marks
The Master armor should give you rank 30 light, but you have to Max out the faction level at 15, same for the Exotic weapons.
Idk I really would love to have this system because I would love to have a nice ranking system and better gear to work for. Tell me what you all think and maybe it can happen! Vote on what you think and comment on more ideas.
[edit] Also I think the Factions should have their own storyline. Make them have different quests and character to meet. Make everything a unique experience for each faction. Maybe even have unique class supers? Let me know what you guys think and give your own ideas in the comments! Make sure to vote too!

I like it. I only have one of my Guardians doing any kind of faction. The other two are just Vanguard, I mean right now there is no point. I was leveling New Monarchy for their auto rifle but I got it in an Engram over the weekend so now what?... Unless they over haul factions they serve no purpose but vanity crap, emblems and shaders.
-
Dark Below, factions will have level 30 armor, 31 even - but I do think there should be a 32 option that is Faction specific. Add that you can only get to rank five or above in one faction, if you are willing to abandon your progress in the others. You should have to choose one - makes no sense you can choose all of them.

I wouldn't mind this...my only concern is that's a lot of different currencies...maybe dead orbit, fwc and new monarchy have their own separate from the vanguard...just a thought but I like this idea

The factions definitely need some sort of adjustment to have relevance. I keep dead orbit arm band equipped so I can maybe have a chance at that black shader, but that's it!

The factions originally had backstory that you completed to get into them. There were more factions too. All was removed. I'm sure Bungie still has the content somewhere.
-
Faction only exotics sound cool, and you ahould only be able to pick one faction exotic per character.
-
I love this idea! I wanna see a dead orbit exotic helmet, or exotic gun! They could have awesome fluff, the helmet helps in patrol mode as the whole point of dead orbit is exploration etc etc. It could be very cool and a fun thing to work

From my understanding factions will sell lvl 30 armor after the dlc drops

Kinda sounds like any mmo I have played in the past. At the beginning of level cap or an expansion, you grind out faction rep and buy their gear to get you into the raid. Decent idea but I think a little too extreme for the casual gamer, which is all that bungie and most franchises care about now-a-days.
