There seems to be some confusion, so here is a handy guide:
(WEEK 1)
PLAYER: I just played a ton of Destiny this week, can I buy a weapon?
BUNGIE: Oh, gosh no. We max the marks you can earn a week by 100. Weapons are 150.
PLAYER: Uh, OK. I'll wait till next week.
(WEEK 2)
PLAYER: OK, I played a ton of Destiny this week, can I buy a weapon?
BUNGIE: Silly player. You have the marks but not the rep. Come back when you're rep 3.
PLAYER: Uh, OK. I'll keep playing.
(WEEK 3)
PLAYER: OK, I did like 1000 strike missions. I have 200 marks and I am now rep 3. Can I buy a weapon?
BUNGIE: Well, we just added a new currency called commendations. Did you hit rep 3 before or after the DLC?
PLAYER: Uh, before?
BUNGIE: Well...
PLAYER: GODDAMMIT
(WEEK 4)
PLAYER: OK, I just played another metric ton. I got a commendation. Can I buy a weapon?
BUNGIE: Of course! Aren't you glad how the DLC expanded your play options? Be a legend!
PLAYER: Great. Thanks for the weapon. If I get another 100 marks can I buy another?
BUNGIE: Not until your next commendation!
PLAYER: Hey, Bungie?
BUNGIE: Yeah?
PLAYER: Like five minutes ago I did a skirmish match where one player went AFK in the back of the room. He did nothing but stand there. His K/D at the end of the match was 0.0000001. I didn't even know the leaderboard had that many decimal points. At one point the other team just started dancing around his ghost.
That guy got Gjallarhorn as a drop. For doing ten minutes of nothing.
So why am I playing so much in a single week?
BUNGIE: ...
PLAYER: Yeah. That's what I thought...
