To the grammar ninjas.

So I'm just looking for an intellectual discussion here, which I know is going to be difficult to find due to the wide variety of individuals on the internet. The topic for discussion is why do individuals disregard posts due to poor grammar? The main paragraph is not important and is simply my rant, feel free to skip it and had to the bottom of you wish. Don't get me wrong here folks, I am an English major, and I see a great need to keep at least some form of proper grammar in any discussion but why do individuals ridicule and sometimes disregard valid posts and/or questions because of a few missed commas. To many who have studied the English language outside of highschool you quickly discover that grammar is irrelevant, because grammar, spelling and any other rule of language is decided by the masses. We see this with the English language after the Norman invasion of England with the almost complete destruction of the language. The nobles and educated people of a language decide that they want a specific spelling or format and then impose it on the masses, who either accept it and incorporate or into the language or reject it and attempt their own method. For example the contraction ain't originally was used by nobility and the highly educated class. Over time the peasants began to use the contraction and the educated scholars decided that the word was no longer clean and proper because the peasants were using it and deemed it grammatically incorrect. After that rant I'll get to the meat of the topic, why do you correct others grammar in a setting such as a forum? Are you attempting to help people learn proper grammar, or are you just trying to cut a niche for yourself and secure some form of identity? To those being corrected, do you just not care about grammar, do you just not think of proof reading in a informal setting like a forum? Do you even pay attention to anyone telling you that your grammar is wrong or terrible? Have fun be kind and please discuss this kindly.

It irks me when I see poor grammer in a post. Heck, I have to correct any grammer mistakes I make because it bugs me so much. However, I don't bother to correct another person as long as I can understand what he/she is saying.

  • Personally, I believe that proper grammar and a strong argument go hand-in-hand. Because of how my mind works, I lose a lot of respect for an argument if the other person cannot spell properly or use the proper form of "your." Also, I lose a lot of respect for a post or argument if the other person (or the OP if it is a forum post) is constantly cussing and ranting instead of delivering a cohesive and structured argument. However, a few misplaced commas doesn't bother me too much. THAT is why improper grammar bugs me.

    • Poor grammar is more than a sign of ignorance and inferior intelligence. It's an indicator that the writer cares little for the presentation of his/her remark. If the author can't take their writing seriously, how can you expect the audience to do the same?

"why do individuals disregard posts due to poor grammar" Because if we don't at least make some kind of efforts to correct spelling/grammar, then the poorly written nonsense will become the accepted norm. The ability to effectively and clearly communicate is an essential life skill, especially in a professional workplace; and judging by some of the CV's i have received over the years, there is a staggering % of the population that fails to reach even a basic standard of literacy. Literacy levels are already plummeting at an alarming rate, and for some of us it genuinely irks us to see people talking like an illiterate peasant. According to the BBC, "Young adults in England have scored among the lowest results in the industrialised world in international literacy and numeracy tests" - So when some of us see badly written, terribly presented text, our inner grammar N*zi twitches and we feel compelled to try and defend the remnants of our (once great) language, and we point out that if you write like a moron, then quite often your intended meaning is lost, because you lose the respect of the reader/the audience, and they assume your message is as stupid as you appear to be (for example) Sometimes i do it to help, but i fully admit that sometimes i do it just because it pisses me off :) To my fellow Grammar Police, our motto is "To Correct and Serve" - and i salute you! Edit: Had to change N a z i (without spaces) to N*zi, to avoid having the whole word replaced with a link to a wiki article on Godwin's Law. Got to laugh though; out of all the things written on these forums, *that* is the word that they censor out? Heh...

It's hard to take someone seriously when they type like a child. You're an English major? Well your "to many" should be " too many" My point of view is that, if one is typing correctly and in a mature way, they are more thought out. I'll take them more seriously over someone who isn't. Don't post garbage. Proofread before submitting. I took your post seriously because it wasn't littered with " ur " "wat" or " CAPSLOCK " Sentence structure was good, spelling for the most part was fine and understandable. It shows that a child isn't typing this up. Anyways my point to why I disregard posts that have poor grammar comes down to how well thought out the post was. If you can't type properly I question your thought process and ideas.

With improper grammar and the emotional, childish content of many posts here, many of us find it undesirable to respond. Rather than address their illogical, nonsensical string of misspelled words and endless "sentences", we ignore them. They often get a post reminding them to speak in a way that we can understand them. It is in no way unreasonable to expect other members here to use their native language to communicate and further to do so in such a way that they actually make sense.

            • English is not my first language and I do not live in western country. In my hometown, we don't correct foreigners' grammar like some aggresive westers do on the Internet. It's just too hard for them to learn our language. We have patience and hope you do too :)

              • They do it because they lack self esteem and ripping at someone else makes them feel better about themselves. Psychological problem that stems from habits long before forum life. Sad really - they think real joy comes from negativity and ripping other people down, rather than taking a post on its merits. I view forums like text messages - alternative writing and speech are permissible to an extent.

                •
Poor spelling, misusing words (your, you're etc.) and lack of punctuation all drive me crazy. That being said, I don't necessarily feel the need to correct everyone in the forums. I do believe it reflects poorly on the poster. I think you should take a little time to proofread your response before you hit the post button. I honestly can't comprehend why anyone would want to portray themselves that way, but to each their own I guess. On a final note, for the love of all that is holy, please use some punctuation at the very least. Run on sentences are really hard to decipher.
Could not have said it any better. I hate reading posts that show zero intelligence. I'm grammatically correct, and I mentally correct others mistakes, but I don't go around "grammar policing" everyone. It's just frustrating trying to comprehend some of the threads/posts on here. Lastly, yes, for the love of God, punctuation, please. A thousand times over use punctuation, at the very LEAST.

Unfortunately I'm too arrogant to spend time reading a post that is written by someone with the I.Q of a doorknob, especially when most of the content is typically complaining, attempts at 'satire' or a scream for nerf. I take some form of sadistic pleasure in correcting those fools that can't identify and differentiate between there, their and they're. I think that those individuals should spend their time reading instead of complaining on a gaming forum. But the worst; the ones that really poss me off at the tools that go out of their way to spell a word incorrectly even though it saves no time at all. By that I mean there is an argument (a weak one at best) that 'ur' is faster to type that 'your' and as an added bonus it means the tool in question doesn't need to worry about the correct spelling. But to intentionally spell the word incorrectly even when it uses the same number of characters is simply retardation in progress and I hope they never procreate. -apologies for any grammar errors:)

My goal is to help individuals. Some of the best topics I've read have shown such poor use of the English language. I usually correct the mistakes to begin with, then explain why, basically that if the idea is good, proper grammar and spelling make the topic that much more approachable and really sells the subject. After all of that I then type out my views on the topic, give their post the thumbs up (or down), and carry on in typical forum fashion. Some people take it very harshly, others correct their mistakes and move on. Edit: that opening statement seems a bit exaggerated after reading it again. In all honesty, I only do this if the topic has a few blaring examples, 1-10 at the most. I'm actually more anal about CoC violations as I've been banned from Bungie.net before for violating it.

                  • I tend to ignore them mainly because I find myself disgusted with this generation. You go to school for a reason, so you should use what you're taught. If you don't, you're making yourself look stupid.
