Not sure if this has been suggested before. But what about being able to put some sort of flag to display that you are in need of a fire team.
For example if I am trying to run the nightfall, but don't have anyone else to run it with, then I can set a flag in the character menu maybe along with a message that says that I am looking for someone to join.
This way, when people are walking around in the tower or during patrols, they can hover over me and see a red flag or some sort of icon above my name. When they click The left stick, which currently brings up the interact menu, you can see the message sent by the person looking for the fire team. For example the requirements. ( looking for a level 28 Hunter / trying to run nightfall, need two more people )
Thoughts? Though maybe not the perfect solution, it could maybe help a lot of people looking for fire teams without leaving destiny.

I have an LFG suggestion thread up for in-game fireteams already, we already got 244 backers, check it out! http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/76413551/0/0

Anything would help at this point. It will work, but it is small scale. We only have 16 players at the most around us. That's all we see. Getting a team of three? You may get lucky. Six? I don't think so. Any LFG tool in game should be seen system wide. Every player on your system, on line, can see it. We need a board, or a menu, a tower dedicated to certain, specific parties. A tower for raid LFG. All players in it are LFG for a raid. A tower for nightfall LFG, same as above. Ect,ect. It sounds like a lot. But I think it's the simplest solution. I don't think Bungie has the tech, or data available to place a board or menu in the game. It would have been in there from the start. This is the most frustrating issue of this game.

Yes, they need more stuff like this in addition to matchmaking!

The tower already has random rooms. Just label them as gathering places for different activities. Done!

Add opt-in Matchmaking for weekly and nightfall

A great idea that I wish to add something to. Instead of a flag in the character menu, how about the vanguards sell items you can equip on your character to make it visibly obvious you want, need or are offering help for co op. For example,. If you are a hunter, you can purchase a hunter's cloak from the vanguard master hunter whose sole purpose is to let other players know you want to co op. the cloak/bond/waist belt can be bright yellow and, when ppl see you wearing it, they won't be afraid to invite you to co op. And different colors could represent different activities. Bright yellow could mean you are available to co op for weekly strikes. White means you are available for Nightfalls. Glowing blue tells everyone you are available for raid normal And glowing red means you are available for raid hard. I think we are on to something here.
