***Skip below to get right to the steps***
Ok, so after days of trying to update to the new comparability packs and dealing with NAT settings of my University's Internet security, I have finally found a solution that works for me on my XBOX 360. It requires a bit of transferring and re-installing of Destiny, but I think it will work for some people.
I ended up taking my XBOX 360 home to use my home internet to update because the campus that I live at had NAT settings that prevented me from connecting to the XBOX Live Store. So you should try to be on a private network at home to do this, and it might take a while.
*****Here's what worked for me after trying for hours and hours to download*****
1) Go to: System -> Storage -> Internal Hard Drive -> Games -> Destiny, and then delete everything on the storage device having to do with Destiny. You Guardians will be safe, they are are stored on Bungie's Destiny servers.
2) Restart the XBOX 360. Once it has booted up again, insert the disk and load the game. It may freak out on you, that's okay, just restart the console if you have to do until the install screen appears (I had to restart mine once or twice).
The game should begin transferring game content (Installing 5.51GB). While this happening, your XBOX should also be downloading the new updates, Compatability Packs 1 & 2. One pack will be around 144MB and the other somewhere between 1GB - 2GB.
3) Here's the part that took me a while to understand. The "TRANSFERRING GAME CONTENT" task should have a percentage circle beside it, BUT the others will not. The packs (at least one, that I know) will have the Bungie loading swirl. LEAVE IT ALONE IT IS DOWNLOADING.
You can't see it on that screen. If you go to active downloads you should see them there. It will take forever to download, but it's downloading. Unless it says that a pack has stopped downloading (it will be a message from your console with the XBOX Icon in a green message box), you should leave it be and let it download.
4) Once it's done the game should continue to your Guardian Home Screen. Select your Guardian and go to orbit as there will probably be a message about Iron Banner. Dismiss it, go to your XBOX Dashboard by turning off the game, then reboot the console.
5) The game should boot right up correctly now, although mine reinstalled the game for some reason. It didn't redownload the packs, it just reinstalled the 5.51GB of content. From there on the game should take you to the Guardian Home Screen. Reboot. The game should play like normal.
Please, if this works for you, share it or repost it so that Guardians around the world can get back to saving the worlds from the Darkness and whatnot.
Guardian of the Light,
