In the wake of the Return of Iron Banner, some words of advice to those who SUCK at PvP...from one who once did (long)

Edit 3 (Edits 1 & 2 below): I'd like to thank everyone who's responded and been complimentary. I wrote it to help others see that they can get better at PvP if they just see the problems they have and put forth the effort to fix them. For those reading this for the first time, there is a wealth of knowledge that has been dropped by those who know how to do this so I implore you to read through the comments and check it out for yourselves. Again, thank you all for responding and thank you to those who have defended me against the haters who only wish to bitch and not be positive. Guys, Iron Banner returns this week (or so I've heard) and I cannot wait to jump in there and kick some ass, and this is funny considering that when it first came around I did it sparingly since, the sad truth was, I was terrible at PvP. I'd ditched the Thorn bounty three times because of the crucible part and the same was done with Invective. I'd read of others ditching these bounties and/or avoiding the PvP altogether for the same reasons as I and I just let it go as a part of the game I would never be a part of. But then I got the Invective bounty again (A Dubious Task) and, as I was half way through discarding it--I stopped. Looking at the screen and that elusive gold square looking back at me, I had a revelation: I was going to f*cking figure out the PvP one way or another and get that gun! I went to the crucible and got my ass kicked again and again, but this time I didn't mind because I wasn't there to win, I was there to learn: what were the guys who were killing me in firefights doing to beat me, even when I'd gotten the jump on them? How was it that I kept getting caught flat-footed, even from cover? Why wasn't I killing these guys even though I had blasted them dead on center mass (or so I thought)? And how in the f*ck does that damned radar work??????? These questions and others haunted me, but in time, through ass beatings, forum posts, ass beatings, YouTube videos and more ass beatings, I started to figure it out. Slowly, very slowly, I started not to get killed so much and then I started to hit back. I never got that much of a high score, but I was starting to get a score...and soon things started to change. It took awhile, but I started getting better, and then, on 11/1/14, this happened: http://i.imgur.com/SVxrZ12.jpg Yes, as shocked to sh*t as I was, I was the lead scorer on a winning team (I'd come out on top of a few losing teams before that, but this was the one that got me the most). I couldn't believe it! Was this a fluke? Well, no, it wasn't. I haven't done it often, but I came out on top a few more times on winning teams and yesterday I did something extraordinary (the impetus for writing this post): http://i.imgur.com/IlkIYpA.jpg Yes, that's 32 kills which included a 12 victim long killing spree. I f*cking dominated that match and I had so much fun doing it that I thought I should write this post for those of you who suck at Crucible but wish they could join. The RNG sucks to high heaven, yes (it wasn't until two weeks ago that I got a legendary prize--and from a Blue engram of all things (Final Boss--f*ck yeah!!!) and the matchmaking is kinda lopsided (one match your team dominates, the next you're getting ass--blam!-), but the fun I have is more then enough for me (though watching that dude in forth place on our losing team--which I topped--get Thunderload really pissed me the f*ck off). So, some words of advice: 1-Don't f*cking stand still--EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't tell you how many time I've gotten kills from guys who just stand there and shoot at me. In the words of the great Muhammad Ali you gotta 'Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee'. Bob and weave, move your feet--keep moving. All of the best I see constantly keep in motion as it's so much harder to get all those hits on them. 2-Figure out the radar: it may seem like a challenge, but it's much more simple then you may think. This video will help you out with that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDumLvofnLc 3-Bring the proper guns!! I know you may love that pulse rifle in PvE, but in PvP, it'll likely get you dead (if you're not good to begin with). Hand Cannons & Auto Rifles are good Primary weapons for the guy who's still learning (leave the Scout Rifles for more polished hands, okay.) For Specials, Shotguns get a bad rap and some of it I think is deserved, but it'll get you through a tight spot for sure. Snipers? Don't even bother as those take a practiced hand (and the distances in the majority of matches negate it's pluses except for the very gifted (which, if you're taking these words to heart, you are not). Fusion Rifles? I'm an FR lover for sure, but these also take a talented hand to use and I don't really recommend them for the guy trying to get good. Remember, you're not trying to win every match off of the bat, you're just trying to figure out the essentials so that you'll have a base of knowledge from which you can build on. 4-Most importantly--Small chunk it: That's right. Don't go all in trying to win the match or get a high score, go it to answer the questions you're having problems with like I can't figure out the radar--go and just try to figure out how it works, f*ck how many times you die doing it. I can't hit these guys in the head--spend 5 or 6 matches just trying to figure out the mechanics of the headshot. I can't this, I can't that--take your time, take a few matches and figure that aspect out, too. To get good at the Crucible (or anything for that matter) is simply a matter of getting down the various aspects that make it all work (i.e. The Fundamentals). Each part exemplifies the whole and when you take them apart and learn how they work, you start seeing that this isn't that much of a mystery at all, it just seemed that way because you weren't taking the time to learn the language. Do these things and you will get better--I did and you can. And though I'm nowhere near the best, I have a great time doing it now and that's more important than anything. To all those who have figured this out, please feel free to comment on what you think others can do to get better. Thanks for reading, guys. Enjoy Edit: BTW, I forgot to mention that not only did I get Invective, but I good Thorn soon after. :-D Edit 2: I want to thank those who have complimented me on this post, especially those that are already good at PvP. If you look at my K/D across my characters, you'll notice it's pretty bad, but then that's because of how abysmal I was in PvP for so long. Those photos don't lie though and they're not the only ones of got of me being top dog (and those are only of the times when my team won). I wouldn't still be playing if I hadn't improved. Stay strong and persevere.

  • Great post gonna stick it out and learn pvp I had about given up trying to even learn it back when CoD was out and my son would destroy me as well as others. He would try to help me out but he couldn't explain how he does it, he swears it is so easy and while he's playing it looks effortless. Until he hands me the control and not even ten seconds and i'm dead -- respawn and run back into the fight and bamm dead again while he is sitting there looking at me like i'm an idiot asking "why did you run right in front of him" and "you walked right by the doorway where 1 was coming out of". (Had no clue what guys he was referring to) then I swear it felt like he was scolding me when he was yelling where to turn or watch out for sniper upstairs. I just couldn't get my hands and my brain to work together in perfect synch. So my son e took back controller and proceeded to school me as well as the poor people he was playing against on the proper use of the radar by running around and calling out where an enemy was or where he was going and maneuvering around the map like he had grown up there and getting the drop or ambushing every single enemy that he called out and did some of it so fast from target to target that I couldn't keep up with which kill was which. I gave it one last try thinking watching him might of helped well it didn't. He sat there and watched me get my butt spanked over and over while trying to give helpful advice but was having a hard time because he was laughing so hard. pretty much that was the last time that I played CoD accepting the fact that I plain suck at it with a gamepad. A computer with a mouse and keyboard thats a whole different ballgame, I can dominate a PvP game on the PC ( which is weird because the radar is my best friend on the Pc and you figure it would translate to the console all those hours playing fps's on my PC. Well it didn't so I just gave up trying to play pvp on the console period. I did only the least amount I needed to in destiny and never a free for all because the only thing that was free was me giving away kills. Your article made me think maybe I was trying to do to much coming off a PC and dominating I thought I would come right onto a console and be good at it not so bad that even my wife came in room to see what was going on and joined in. Became a running joke for a while; well some where funny enemy jump out in front and I panic get of 1 poorly aimed shot try to evade and track target lost him see nothing but sky and its spinning in a circle pretty fast by the time i find earth again i'm dead or enemy pops out i think i got a bead on him but he also sees me so i backpetal to keep distance and right off the cliff or stuck in a tree or a rock a door or something that is followed by a respawn. Yeah anyone reading this is thinking what a noob and I don't blame you but play me on a computer or if you have played with me in pve I'm not claiming to be the best but I do well in pve, I just suck at crucible. Well your post was what I needed to go back in there and figure it out (of course late night while kids and wife are asleep) but if you can do it then its not impossible its just gonna take a little work. Basically after that novel I just wanted to say thanks for giving me that little push I needed to go back in there with a purpose and some motivation to figure it out rather than avoiding it.

    • See, this whole post is BULLSHIT. You don't do good INDIVIDUALLY in the Iron Banner. There is NO SUCH THING. When I am doing the best on my team, I worry. Why? Because I SUCK. Know why I suck? Because I am matched with randoms because I have no friends. Today, I have played five Iron Banner matches. EVERY SINGLE GAME 4/6 people went negative. And its only the 2nd day but it seems that I'm the ONLY -blam!-ING PERSON not in a clan or party. Its so stupid that they don't have matchmaking. MATCHMAKING is how you do well in PVP, especially Iron Banner. Yesterday? I was in a funk for 2-3 games, THEN I got on the good team. The other team RARELY broke 10K in points. And the Medallion of Iron is such a stupid concept. As if I don't feel bad enough already with you having to give me a runner's up medal to hold onto until l win. And the fact that you can carry up to FIVE means that Bungie doesn't give a shit about matchmaking. This would imply that it would be possible, nigh LIKELY, that you will could lose up to five games in a row. Statistically this should be very difficult and yet I keep losing time and again because I'm one of those people who, once again, have no friends to play online with me. I'm just doing this -blam!-ing playlist to get the shader. That's it. At least I can look cool on my sparrow. Had to make my own legendary one with Vanguard marks and Xur's drive. Why? I've never done the raid because no matchmaking and no friends. I want to love this game so much but it does little more less than piss me off whenever I try matchmaking.

      • The most important thing is to have a Suros and Invective fully upgraded then you don't need skill. Just run around randomly shooting into the air and you'll filter up to the top of the scoreboard. It also helps if you can regenerate health while being shot and if you can throw a Nova Bomb every 14 seconds.

          • your advice stinks... sit still, watch, boom... i'm a camper with patience and time - when the team rushes me after i continue to take them out one by one, i explode into my sparkly bladedancer, slice em up, kneel, and repeat the process... i decided to master the sniper so i use it most of the time.

            • Since people always attribute how well you do only to that person's skill, what skills allow me to defy the mechanics of the game? Take the lvl 27 hunter RawIce13 with his whopping 1206 armor. He was caught in the outside radius of my titan slam, so yes I realize he wouldn't take full dmg from it. My squad mate hits him full on with a grenade and proceeds to unload on him as I come around the corner. He eats the grenade and drops him in .5 seconds flat as I throw my grenade and unload all 33 rounds of a 300 dmg Suros. His shield was the only thing that dropped. He backs up into a tunnel pipe looking thing and comes forward again and kills me juts as fast. Now I have nearly 200 more armor and 2 levels on him. His weapon was a 257dmg pulse. Or mr fox Ov War who can shoot his maxed out Suros in full auto and can do the same dmg defying tactics I didn't know were possible. Yes He is lvl 30 but he steam rolled 3 people after being blasted by 2 titan grenades and 1 warlock nova grenade and who knows how many rounds. Any advice how to do this? Bc until I figure it out ill just drop out of match after match after match. Cheating, piss poor servers I don't know what, but I'm sick of sending video after video and name after name to Bungie. You don't go from a 2-4+ KD match after match then suddenly turn retarded and fail miserably. This time around with the Banner seems to have brought out way more problems then before. Cheating? Server Issues? Both? I don't know but its gotten old. I get out dmg'd now constantly no matter what wep I use. I have even tried to use the weps these people with mechanic defying skills are using and I can't replicate the same success.

                • Great post! PvP in this game has a bit of a learning curve IMO. I stuck with it though after putting off trying it and am now seeing my meager 1.0 KDR climb. This game requires skill and patience and most of all, situational awareness.

Awesome advise.... I am for sure not the best at pvp and I will never claim to be. I have a horrible k/d ratio but it is slowly getting better. I believe the first game that I got that had pvp in it was uncharted 2. I played that game tell uncharted 3 came out. I sucked in the beginning... I would also like to mention it wasn't first person shooter. When I moved to black ops 2 it was really new to me since it was 1st person. Took some adjustment but I didn't do to bad. So thanks for the advice..... the only thing I would say is I am not very favorable to shotguns I have honestly dismantled everyone that I got. (Just my personal preference no hate to anyone who uses them). I prefer the sniper yes a bit more challenging but with practise it's a great weapon to use. Not great for close range attacks but I learned running along the outside of the maps help with getting good advantages. I also love using my vog which is my go to gun. Me personally like it and think I get the headshots better with it. Very stable and packs a good punch. Once again just my personal opinion (no hate) awesome post once again!

                      • Number one thing to learn and it is a common thing that guys mess up on all of the time. Do not die. Run away. Avoid death. Don't run forward in many blazes of glory trying to take everyone out. Recover and watch that corner. The less you die, the less points the other team gets. Even in control. I have many other strategies, but this one is free. I hope many of my future random teammates will learn this tactic. If you're looking to join a group that plays crucible daily and has some real killers. Check us out. Warriors After Revenge (PS4). Join team WAR. We do a lot of PVP and are looking to expand our ranks with some more killers. Would be nice to have PvP guys that would also like to do the Raid every so often as well.

Im not bad at PVP and im not great nut when i play banner as opposed to reg crucible and it says LEVEL ADVANTAGES ENABLED i EXPECT at a higher lebel than a 24 to have an advantage (bungies words- a player 3 or more levels higher than the other will seem like a boss) HASNT HAPPENED YET

                          • I have found a kindred spirit. In all seriousness, this is exactly how I felt, except for the radar, I always understood that, but that's because I've been hardcore reliant on it since day 1. I too use to suck at PvP, and then the first iron banner happened, and my KDR slowly rose from that point onward. lately I've hit a bit of a slump because I've been trying to acclimate myself to using a few different weapons outside of my crucible comfort zone since I love them in PvE (Hawkmoon is a beautiful gun, but takes some practice in pvp, especially when not fully upgraded). I have to say that I appreciate this post so much and It's one of the positive parts of a gaming community that often gets drowned out by all the negativity. You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

                            • I feel the same way. I got my but kicked a-lot! First tip, play with friends, win or loose you'll have more fun! Second tip: follow a more experienced player, see what they do, and help them out. Learn the maps, learn the radar. Keep an eye on the weapons people are using when you get killed If someone gets the drop on you, it's better to run than to get gunned down. And try to have fun (that's why we got the game after all!)

Great post, I tip my cap to you, sir. Here are some additional things I've found helpful: 1. Do the day's Vanguard bounties before going right into the Crucible. This helps you "warm up," and I've found I do noticeably better in the Crucible after doing my bounties for the day. You don't have to do this, but typically I take 2-3 matches to get into my usual form if I go in cold. 2. If you see an indicator for a dead teammate DO NOT immediately rush into that area. 3. Try and stay away from snipers unless you are really good with them. Use low-zoom snipers as they offer a much better field of view. I have a fully upgraded Patience and Time but I still use a rare sniper in PvP on those rare occasions when I carry a sniper (only 2 maps). 4. Know the most traveled paths on the map. Not only so you don't just rush into a bunch of enemies, but also so you can sit back and pick off the people who do rush these areas. 5. Weapon stability is king in PvP. In normal PvP (not Iron Banner) I use a Shingen-E rare AR with maxed stability. The red dot barely even moves when you fire, making kills much easier to get. In Iron Banner I use a Vanquisher VIII because it's the best stability you can get in a legendary AR, and it has been doing well for me. 6. Don't get mad just because you lose a match. I've had matches in Control where I end with a personal score of 4000+, but our team still loses. You can and will do well without winning the match so don't let it get to you. 7. Once you take a point in Control, DO NOT STAND IN THE GODDAMN CONTROL ZONE. Move to nearby cover and wait for the opponents to rush in and try to capture the zone. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE

                              • That's some good advice, I generally suck at PvP I have the odd amazing game when I'll top the board and it feels great. I've learned that my game mode is Control as that allows me to get kills and help out the team by capping points etc without having to get the most kills in a game. I also learned to not care about my K/D it's just a number and isn't what decides my enjoyment of a game. I used to care and it used to make me angry when I would be on a losing streak. Now as long as each individual encounter is fun and the match as a whole feels good then I'm happy. I game to have fun so that applies to my PvP too!
