There have been many rumors saying that Atheon could perhaps be a good guy. I am here to propose my theory as to why this may be true.
Let's start by stating how this theory is supported. Atheon is a Vex (obviously). The Vex worship The Black Garden. Specifically, it's Heart. The Heart of The Black Garden is a god to the Vex. The Black Garden is part of The Darkness.
Atheon's name is Greek. It is a form of Atheos. Spit that into a translator, and it will ask you if you meant this: Άθεος. What does that mean in English? Godless, Atheistic, or Atheistical.
Let's make the connection here. Does this suggest that Atheon defies the will of The Black Garden? The Black Garden is a part of the darkness, so does this mean that Atheon is a being of Light? A Guardian?
Probably not. The Grimoire for Atheon states that he has a purpose. He is a conflux of time (as his name states as well). He regulates and oversees the Vex conflux system. If any of this is true, he can't be good.
But read the last line of his Grimoire card.
"But we must accept that all of this is speculation"
His Grimoire is more than likely true, but what if it wasn't. Here is where my theory comes in.
What if Atheon really was a good guy? He could have tried to stop the Vex. The Oracles forsaw this attempt and imprisoned him. That is why he is in the deepest part of the Vault. He is a prisoner, a traitor, and it is his punishment.
Let's look at The Templar's Grimoire.
"The Templar and the Oracles guard the way into the deeper Vault. Legends say that the Oracles foresee what is to come, a world as the Vex desire it - and that the Templar has the power to shape reality to match the Oracles' design, expunging any threats."
The Templar guards Atheon, to be sure that he is never released. The only one who would even have a chance at knowing the weakness of the Vex. He can shape reality. He created Atheon's 'cell' and guards it. He expunges any threats. Atheon is a threat to the Vex. If we release him, that makes us threats.
Why does he attack us? Well, if someone walked into my house and started shooting, questions aren't exactly the first thing on my mind.
That's my theory on Atheon. I hope you enjoyed reading through it! If you have feedback, post it and tell me your thoughts, and tell me if you agree. Have a good day, Guardians!

Well you guys should think as Atheon's perspective: firstly, if you were imprisoned for a long time, you might get crazy and would harm anyone in sight secondly, if you're imprisoned for a long time, its likely that you would forget what light and darkness means, or even how guardians differ from vex In the two cases I mentioned, Atheon would try to protect himself from anything or go berserk on everything since he already forgot what vex and guardians look like, just treat him like a wild bear meeting a human, although the bear has no business with humans, they'd still attack just to protect themselves

This came to my mind as well and started searching amd found a video about atheon. But seriously? What if he wasnt really an enemy? He couldve been an ally to the guardians. Man, the lore is just too deep. Plus... sorry for necroing but this thread deserved more attention.

I think he's a bad guy who shares other common enemies with us

If Atheon is a good guy, why don't the supplicants just attack him? And the oracles and the gorgons can erase whatever they want from reality, so why not erase Atheon if he's such a big threat? Overall, a very weak theory supported by very little proof.

This is a good theory but it feels like there's something missing but I don't know what.
-
Could Atheon be Kabr?
-
I agree with you. I believe the vault of glass is nothing more than a prison for Atheon. There are Gatekeepers who protect the realms of time from alien threats, gorgons and oracles use the power of the vault to protect the interior, and the door to the vault is.. A giant vault door. It kinda makes sense!

Interesting, here have a like

I doubt it, Atheon is more likely a vex mind that doesn't subscribe to the black garden god. Although, this does suggest a schism in the vex. Atheon's domain seems to be time, so the black garden itself (and the vex therein) reside outside of time so they can worship their god in peace. They both want to create existence as they see fit, they just have different ideas of how to do it.
*huffing the Fallens' ether*
I love how this game has virtually no story in game, but there's all this lore and theories that make it all interesting.
-
Maybe Atheon is godless, implying nothing greater than it
-
Dialga and Palkia from Pokemon came to mind when I read this....

Bump for life!!!

The vex may only serve the darkness because it can't beat it, atheon may have been "plan b" in that the vex could become more powerful than the darkness and no longer need to serve it.

Edited by heisenburg6969: 11/8/2014 6:49:45 PMAtheon is so evil he left the black garden and created the vault.. so technically he is the ruler of the vex
-
I see two problems with this theory. Killing the Oracles in the timestream not only does nothing to help Atheon but is in fact the key to defeating him. Also, Atheon is encountered at the "Glass Throne". (or something like that, I don't pay much attention to area names...) If nothing else, that name at least IMPLIES that Atheon is a leader rather than a prisoner.

Atheon is Kabr.

Best shit i read all day

I'll just throw a addition or alteration if you will towards your theory, what if the Vault of glass is not a prison for Atheon but a prison for a much darker creature, that the vex have kept contained and the Templar as well as Atheon are the keepers of the vault. Atheon "times conflux" he is the point between the future and the past where these two can meet and be manipulated by him can willing almost as to guard the chamber with this power that he is set in. " the needle is atheon, I do not know the name of the shape that comes after the needle." This is more of a scenario my brain has developed from reading people's theory's and the lore, I have not read all of it. There's more to my theory but I'll leave it at that.

Completely interesting and false. I have the story, cryptic meanings, the Darkness, the Traveler, and the overarching plot all figured out and predicted accurately. In time, my threads elaborating on all of these topics, and more, will come.

Good guy Atheon over here.

If Atheon was a prisoner and we killed "The Vex" that were guarding his cell (i.e. "The Vault"), it seems to me it would be grateful, or at least try to communicate with us, and, also, he wouldn't be able to call in other "Vex" ("Oracles" in particular) to attack us.

That's a rather compelling theory.
