We Are The Darkness - Theory

We all know how Bungie presented Destiny's "storyline" (currently the equivalent of an excuse to kill things...a lot), was terrible. However there is always the ever expanding range of Grimoire cards that genuinely are well written (Especially in contrast to the game itself, *I'm looking at you Exo Stranger*): We wonder Bungie, why have you hidden away all of your story substance in an external app/website and literally 0% of it inside the core game? Well...
I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain.
Anyway, I'm not here to rant about the wasted story opportunities in the core game (however it wouldn't be a destiny story discussion without it). Getting to the point, I'll summarise here: -The Darkness is the Traveller. -Humanity is extinct. -The aliens are the good guys. Yup you read that right. That big hovering ball of hope and happiness turns out to be as twisted and dark as The Speaker (have you heard what this guy says? He's like a modern day Herbert the Pervert). Basically, after reading a number of theories and more grimoire cards than I'd like to say, I've agreed on the idea that the Traveller isn't what it says it is, just because we saw a cutscenes with rain on mars doesn't mean anything, play that scene again with intense villain music and you'll get a whole new perspective. In my opinion, this Civilisation and life hating 'Darkness' is the Traveller, it 'travels' around and attempts to corrupt and destroy intelligent life as it goes. 'The Fallen' could be one such victim, as the name suggests they were once a great empire ruled by a respected Royalty. Read up on some grimoire cards for information on that. Obviously they're not so united anymore, more like clans now, squabbling between themselves. Has the traveller corrupted their once structured society? Did the traveller destroy their home world? Are they chasing in desperate revenge? The same could probably be said for the Cabal, possibly being as warlike as they are, could simply see the Traveller as threat and wish to attack it while it's weak. The vex are one of the more interesting races. The Vex originated from the Black Garden. They began as gardeners and architects born simply to worship and serve the god that lived there. As seen in grimoire cards the garden is the place of life. If this garden is the birth place of life and existence wouldn't that make it the polar opposite of the Traveller? Why do you think we're sent to Destroy the Garden's heart? One Grimoire card really gives huge ground to this kind of theory, "Legend: The Black Garden" describes a Guardian who had visions of the Garden, of himself waking through a path in the garden, experiencing all of the life around him. One paragraph reads:
At the end of the path grew a flower in the shape of a Ghost. I reached out to pluck it and it cut me with a thorn. I bled and the blood was Light. The Ghost said to me: You are a dead thing made by a dead power in the shape of the dead. All you will ever do is kill. You do not belong here. This is a place of life.
This piece says a lot. Let's break it down. First of all is the suggestion that ghosts were grown in the Garden. That would say that Traveller stole the ghosts from the garden, would that be the reason that the Vex now attack it relentlessly ? To retrieve what is there's? The fact that Ghosts can return life to the corpses of guardians strengthen the theory that they came from the garden where life itself was born. Next is the very clear message that "Light" is not the all heavenly substance we think it is, or as the traveller portrays it to us. It is a power of death, almost like a necromancy. The Traveller is accused as a dead thing, as are the Guardians. One very interesting line is: "You are a dead thing made by a dead power in the shape of the dead." is this suggesting that humanity is in fact "dead"? That maybe the Traveller wiped out the human civilisation and what remains are resurrected dead things made in their image, fooled into fighting for a long lost cause. "But what about the city in the distance?" Exactly, have you ever seen that city from anything other than a distance? Then there are the Warminds. Especially Rasputin. We know they were created to combat the Darkness as a last ditch effort (probably against the Traveller). But it was too late, Rasputin and the others had failed and humanity was destroyed. But what are Warminds programmed for? Not to sit around and do nothing or tell you where the nearest Starbucks is but for war. This would explain the Warminds continues un-cooperative behaviour. I'd love to hear you're opinions on this to add to everything's as much as we can, all we can do at the moment is speculate but I've found it enjoyable. I'm not taking credit for most of this since it's really my opinion cobbled together by the many theories and ideas I've read. Please leave a comment below! Edit 1: If you found this interesting I strongly recommend reading the comments, props to everyone who contributed. Some of the ideas below are even more detailed and interesting theories. Edit 2: I've decided to take the best and most in-depth theories suggested here and move them to a new topic for easy reading, authors are credited: http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/76767850/0/0

  • play every cutscene ever but replace the music with the song "In the arms of an Angel" and it will make it sad... but I have come to just read game theories for just pure entertainment value nothing more from it.

  • The question to ask is what roll the Stranger plays. She admits she isn't a guardian, she helps you along, then leaves you with a question. Implying that we all have to choose sides. Additionally, what reason does The Queen have to assist you IF the Traveler is the Darkness that wants to snuff out all light? The problem here is that with such a cut and paste story we can't be certain. Sure grimoire cards help, but without the right box to match all the puzzles pieces together, we have little more than speculation.

  • No. When people say "we are the darkness", I have to dismiss automatically. Maybe folks get that from some other place in time and theory. It has been argued that when you reach a higher level of consciousness, the difference between good and evil is non existent. Yet, I think that is just malevolence in its execution. If we are the darkness, then no Guardian should be able to wield light in their armor and in the work they do. Guardians are of the light. Light is never the power of the darkness. The power of darkness is the darkness. Turmoil and pain. Grief and despair. Darkness despises light for it has been cast from it. Darkness is ugly, mutilated and tormented. Look at the hive, which resembles demonic creatures. Their bodies are twisted, they have claws and even the creation of their Ogre's are done in extreme pain to the Orge itself. That is not the way of the Light. The Light creates with mastery and the formation of such things it has brought forth into existence, in its inception of creation, is not done with malevolent intent. It is the creation's choosing which brings it to the darkness. Even in raids, we ask for people to be Level 27 and higher, for that we need stronger light to combat that which comes from the void. The only ones that possibly resembles anything remotely to your theory is the Warlock class. For they walk the fine line between the light and the dark. Yet it is their own principles and beliefs that keep many from not completely succumbing to the temptation of the void and darkness. Yet many Guardians have fallen to its temptation. LOL, it can be argued that the darkness, with all of its temptation and false truths, has even ensnared you into its own beliefs that its existence is good. Those who walk in the light knows that could never be. Darkness has no light. Never has and never will. Yet it will constantly tempt those who does so that they may fall into their misery. Like a spoiled child punished, it will do whatever it can to make others suffer like it suffers. Us true Guardians do not believe in the words you speak.

      • The original story was supposed to have The Black Garden INSIDE the Traveler, and we were supposed to see planet progression as Earth> Venus> Mars> Moon.

Probably the reason the story is so bland as it is. Originally the Traveler and Guardians/Speaker are the bad guys but they had to try to half-ass rewrite it towards the end to make us look good so none of it makes sense. I've had the feeling all along we're like the space zombies just rezzed to do the Speaker's bidding. "Kill this, kill that, don't ask questions" kind of thing. Reminds me a bit of the plot of Oblivion, we are basically Tom Cruise not realizing the Tet is evil at first. Personally I think the warminds defeated the Traveler at a great cost to humanity and Rasputin is all that is left. This would explain why the hive are trying to get into the RAS2 bunker in Forgotten shore with a servant of Oryx in the bottom of the boat near the Vault entrance. I think his AI core is in there and they want to destroy it to remove the last obstacle to bringing back the Traveler, meanwhile Rasputin is trying to reach out to the rest of the system to see what remains of the other warminds to see if he can get their resources/revive them, which would explain why he's in the machines on Mars. Meanwhile the Speaker and ghosts rez all of us up and create their own little myth about the past and what really happened and they now have their own little army to fight the Traveler's enemies. The only thing that doesn't make sense is why we are fighting against the Hive, but perhaps that was just lost in translation when they re-did the story, or its a cover to hide the Hive's true purpose. I also believe the Awoken are humans that escaped Earth during the collapse and gained new powers/abilities and appearances while living for centuries on the borders of dark space. They know the truth about the Traveler and have remained in hiding. Of course sadly we'll never know if any of this is true.

            • This is how I see it as of right now. Based off of what I have read, and seen. Take it as I say it, because I will not support my theory. The black garden is inside of the traveler. The queen is the closest thing to a "good guy". The speaker is most likely vex. We are slaves, and the ghost is our overseer. The stranger used to be a powerful guardian, and banshee served under her. If you listen to most of the vendors their dialog hints to many things that are not right in the tower, but are done anyways.

            • I think that the Darkness is a possessing force. For example the companion app background image where a hunter is presumably hiding from a cabal and fallen soldier that have glowing eyes and outlines. I do not know what part the vex have, as they worship a dark heart of some sort, but still fight cabal and fallen actively. Could it be possible that the other races (exept vex) are in fact desperate refugees that had their civilizations brought to ruin by the Darkness? I have never seen fallen fight cabal but i think they would should they come across each other, yet the app background has a fallen and a cabal presumably working together pursuing a hunter. Hive is just pure evil, i guess, but they gain power from the Darkness like guardians gain from the Traveler and its Light.

              • So...basically you just told me that we are the Darkness? And that the Fallen, Vex, Hive, Cabal and who knows what else are the good guys? And that they still are good guys, despite the fact that they all kill things that aren't them (I.e. Fallen killing Hive when their "on the same side") and that they've beaten us down to our knees, pretty much denying us to live and colonize other planets under the light of other stars? Putting Humanity, the Exos, the Awoken, and etc. near extinction? And WE'RE the bad guys? Suck my sweaty balls ya fat no-life fock.

                  • Kudos to everyone who has posted so far. I really enjoy reading this kind of stuff. To all those who say that this game lacks story, I answer with "You never played Dark Souls". In that game, the story was intentionally ambiguous. I've also heard people compare it to Half Life 2, but I never played that so I can't really speak to it. I digress. My point is: the story is up to you. How much effort do you put forth into finding the ghost fragments? How much do you pay attention when you're exploring? How much time do you spend thinking about the game, even when you can't play the game? All of this determines how much story there is, and if you ask me there's a metric -blam!- TON. I submit that the darkness represents the natural order of the universe. The traveler is an anomaly created outside of time. It's an invader from a different universe/dimension. I believe the Fallen were the original witness to the invasion and they are the only group who know the Traveler for what it is: an engine of change sent here to use our dimension as it saw fit. The darkness is our galaxy's "immune system". The traveler shows up, infects a solar system, and the galaxy restores balance by extinguishing all marked by the traveler. Some factions of fallen society thought the traveler was a god and welcomed the "blessing". Others were not so sure, and they stayed "pure". Divisions started forming in their society, and a war began. Before the newly blessed fallen could crush the pure born, the darkness came and swallowed up the blessed society. With no lifeforms to manipulate, the traveler moved on. The fallen saw this happening and vowed to stop the traveler and all it. The traveler is searching for something. Sent here to find a weapon that will save them. The Exo race (and therefore the stranger) is likely from this universe, as are the Vex. I believe they are engaged in a war for total domination of their universe and the losing side needed to tip the scales in their favor. Thus, the traveler was sent to create a weapon. The vex eventually discovered this alternate universe, and began the same process of using our planets and resources, for their war with the Exo... or maybe the Awoken. Not sure on that one yet. SO... that's what I've theorized so far... what do you guys think?

                    • I like my idea a little better. I'll keep it short. Light is evil. Dark is evil. Eventually we figure this out, shed the light (allowing us to level up through xp past 20), join forces with the stranger, cabal, fallen, and hive to fight off the forces of light and dark.

..I remember this. moth ago there was a guy that presented this exact theory. so, no kudos there.
This is a place of life.
..ok first question is. who? who "walked to the end of the path.."?? normal human? human soul? awoken? one of those mystic exo hunters that "have no time" for anything? or maybe Fallen? ..second "The Ghost said to me" what is ghost? ghost as guardian ghost or ghost as spirit (like, ghost of our ancestors) or some form of existence like Snake in garden of Eden? and last. that was just a vision! from some Dude we know nothing about?. ..assuming to much and Every theory can "sound" as legit.

Cause it was te last planet with life forms that hasn't been consume by darkness.the black garden history puzzles me I mean isn't the ghost supose to ne half robots half light.why they were growing in plants? And why the wound didn't heal? Mabe the Traveler can bring things from death and use death as fuel.an the thing in the black garswn the other way arouns.it can kill things and use that life from the same proposite.like the book of life can kill things and the book of death can revive them. I enjoy reading your theory and hope you enjoy reading mine
