A Serious Problem for Some Players.

It's Saturday and other than running the Vanguard bounties, the Daily Heroic, and a few Public Events, there's nothing to do if you don't play PVP. I hit the Vanguard 100 mark limit 2 days ago so there's no point in pursuing that. Before everyone jumps me out for not going into the Crucible, allow me to explain why I don't play PVP anymore. I started playing PVP with the original Unreal Tournament in 1998. That was 16 years ago and my reflexes had already slowed down to the point where I was barely competitive. Now, at 68-years-old, it's just not real enjoyable having my a$$ handed to me over and over again by a gaggle of testosterone fueled teenagers. I get through the Nightfall and the Weekly Strike at level 28 by playing smart, not by being a gunfighter. In the last two days I've helped a couple of other players get though the Nightfall and the Weekly, but it does get old after a bit. Five other players were gracious enough to allow me to tag along on the Atheon portion of the Raid on normal. It's the first time since release that I've had the opportunity to try the Raid. I know you're not going there, but match-making would be nice even if it's just for limited periods of time. I suppose the bottom-line is: Give us something to do that is infinitely repeatable. A simple XP reward would be more than adequate. The best suggestion I've seen so far is some type of Horde Mode that allows players with different skill sets and physical abilities the opportunity to participate in a meaningful way. (By the way, the Queen's Wrath was a great outlet to extend the day for PVE players.) Please understand that I love the game and want it to succeed mightily. I just don't want to sit forever at 29 with no path forward other than the Raid which remains a limited opportunity. Continually spinning one's wheels simply destroys the incentive to stay with the game. Thanks for listening! Toonces T. Cat

  • I'm currently 18, and i also shy away from the crucible because of this as well. i may still be "testosterone fueled", but this isn't true for all young people. Crucible and most pvp games have a certain... well allure for those who like that sort of thing. I personally enjoy the social whopping i can give the fallen with my clan mates alot more than i like shooting other gaurdians in the face with my thorn. It just isn't alluring at all. I cringe the moment an exotic bounty tells me I have to play the crucible...but that's just me.

    • Why do we need a mark limit anyways?

First, congratulations on keeping your gaming habits alive. Second, I agree. We need more PvE content. Bungie hinted they're fully rebuilding the Queen's wrath, so hopefully it can become a template for environment oriented gameplay. I personally loved Queen's wrath for the first two days, but afterwards it became too repetitive to be sustainable. With any luck, and plenty of developers hearing what we're saying, we will see game modes like hard, semi cooperative PvE ( big public events where people are competing at random times), and semi cooperative PvP, where you have teams against team against AI enemies. edited because my phone likes to correct PvE to PvP.

        •
I get through the Nightfall and the Weekly Strike at level 28 by playing smart, not by being a gunfighter.
Do you want to elaborate on that . I find trying to be smart hasn't helped me a great deal because I can't get used to some of the game dynamics, specifically enemy spawning. Enemy spawning always catches me in the wrong place at the wrong time. I try to be careful and I clear an area before moving into it, great it's clear so I move in and boom I'm surrounded by a dozen plus enemy. That other mechanic I don't like is when you do die and then re-spawn at the last check point without your ammo so now you are forced to repeat the exercise under more difficult circumstances. Appreciate any tips you might have.

        • Well I can admit as a testosterone fueled 23 year old, I often shy away from the crucible. For me, Sundays and Mondays are filled with farming for materials and leveling new guns and gear. During the week, if I have too many beers I also resort to these activities because my hand-eye coordination is often the first thing to go. Past leveling a new character, I don't have any other suggestions for ya, Gramp'.

        • On a side note... My House!', wasn't that one of the bragging voices in Unreal when you vaporised some dude? I remember those days and the maps. Used to love that gun that blew out those hot chunks of shrapnel! Great multiplayer game at the time. Fun times bro from another gaming vet!

          • I agree with you completely. Personally, I have people to do the raid with but even that's only one more thing to do per week. I think (and they probably wouldn't do this) that they should make the once a week things into two a week thing instead. It would give the PvE a lot more replay value and let us get enough Vanguard mark in a week to actually get something useful. Again, they likely wouldn't do that saying "that would hurt replay value" or something like that without realizing that the PvE doesn't really have any replay value past two or three days.

          • I am 54, my days of having a teenagers reflexes was over long ago. I loved to drive the Warthog and would like a similar chance to shine in PVP is a different way other than just gunfighting. I have a 26 and 24 level character and am very bored with grinding out day after day for little reward.

At least you have got to level 29. My brother and I are stuck at 23/24 respectively. We grind for hours and get very little back. Neither of us do PVP. I too have lost my edge from age. The rewards in this game just don't add up.. You do a random strike or daily heroic and get 12-25 reputation points after spending 3/4 hour killing a bad ass boss. Compare that to 10-25 rep points for completing the simplest patrol sub-mission and you can get several times that in 3/4 hour. On top of that the only way to get Marks is to do the strikes so players are forced to get low yields on rep points. GRIND, GRIND, GRIND. At my current rate it will take me another sixty days to amass enough rep points to get to rank 2 which will enable me to buy legendary Vanguard armor. At that rate I can completely forget ever getting to rank three to buy legendary weapons. I simply can't image my interest, in this low reward game, lasting that long. And lastly it takes so long to unlock levels that by the time you do unlock them you already have randomly found items better than the ones you can unlock!!!

              • I've just lost the taste for competition. I played halo 2 a lot, but now would rather just shoot stuff cooperatively. I don't like PvP and am saddened by how integral it is to the game.
there's nothing to do if you don't play PVP
This
Give us something to do that is infinitely repeatable
The answer you are going to get is patrol bounties are repeatable. I agree with the OP that the PvE side of things is now to the point where on a non Tuesday I log in, do the Daily Heroic, do the Daily Public Event and then fire up Shadows of Mordor. Tuesdays I have Nightfall and the Weekly and Saturday is my group's Raid day. There is no benefit to repeating activities. As a sign of how bored we all are, we re-ran the Raid on Sunday simply to time ourselves and start randomizing our roles (practice) for when Atheon jumbles up who he sends into the time stream. I am now working a second hunter up simply so that I have another shell to throw my armor and weapons onto so that I can run Nightfall twice and have it mean something. I agree with your take on PvP. I'm not as old as you but it is simply not enjoyable. Network issues that cause me to get postmortem melee kills and simply inexplicable game mechanics that have me and my friends testing shotgun blasts at point blank range to see one person die and one not die just raise the frustration level of Crucible. I've always been an RPG guy first but I did find PvP FPS far more enjoyable when I was younger. I now prefer the company of my friends as we work together towards a common goal. One of the most rewarding things this weekend was having a person who is not a member of our normal raid party join us Sunday because his group simply is not getting it done. During the 2nd stage of the Templar he stated "man you guys are really coordinated". That was a win for me as we went on to post our best raid time with this new person figuring out his role within our structure. That's fulfilling. End of the day I don't go to the Crucible. I went yesterday to try to work the Thorn bounty and because frustrated with the imbalance of the bounty and the preference it gives to Warlocks in achieving it. I abandoned it. I don't feel like wasting hours of my life in a section of gaming I simply do not enjoy. I get why others do. I don't. I'm a combat veteran and I've had enough of shooting at people in anger and that's what PvP causes me now... anger.
Gorrakz (from comments here) Damn dude... Your playing an online mmo. Better get used to pvp and learn to like it because its here to stay
Good MMOs for a very long time now have successfully struck the balance between players who do and do not want PvP. Look at Dark Age of Camelot, Star Wars Galaxies and even WoW as examples of how both approaches can be satisfied. This is not an all or nothing proposition. Both sides of the line can find satisfaction if the game is built correctly.

                • i understand where you're coming from. i appreciate having endgame content just for groups but would love some more challenges for 1 player exp. besides trying to run existing strikes at higher lvls in the weekly heoric/nightfall, all of the high end content/rewards are locked away for the more dedicated group orientated player base. the solo exp is getting dry now (patrols need more value) and we need some challenge that gives a lone wolf a chance at some of the weapons shut away to raid only players (so we can get to lvl 30), it could be tough and limited to weekly but its hard to find something to do at lvl 29 onwards.

                • The 100 vanguard mark limit needs to be ditched; it's far to restrictive. If I want to put in the extra effort to earn shitloads of vanguard marks so I can buy armour 'n stuff, I should be free to do so. Perhaps it is there purely to slow down character progression. Discuss :-)

                  • AGGREED!!!! i dont like PVP however i love PVE it only takes a few hours of play a week to max the vangard playlist, complete the weekly and even complete the raid. I very quickly find myself asking.... whats next? please implement somthing more for PVE gaming, somthing that can be repeated alot (random) - Horde, love the idea... a survival mode which can be played with fireteams of up to 6 (so raid groups could practice together) but also... can be played solo - aka... enemy numbers change based on numbers of players - Replaying missions with a specific bounty attached should be easier... and i dont mean a bounty to kill the boss... it has to be an extra thing.. AKA... complete this mssion without dying or without using a super somthing we can work on.

                  • Congrats on the gaming. I'm 42 and also spend most of my time getting slaughtered in the crucible. I enjoy it mind you. I find I just need to set some more realistic goals for myself like trying to get to 1000 points or playing control and taking the control points. I'm never going top the round but you still get your crucible marks, bounty experience and your random drops so for me it keeps me leveling up!

                    • My frustration with PvP began when it stopped being friends playing against each other on split screen. I had loads of fun playing in the combat simulator in Perfect Dark with friends, it actually had more features and play modes than the Crucible. I enjoy online gaming, but really only coop modes now. I never got into the PvP stuff. I've always been much more Final Fantasy than Unreal. Really, despite a few random short lived experiences, Destiny is my first foray into the current PvP FPS land. It's been just ok. I am good enough to get through the exotic bounties when required or to grind marks. But I would never normally play PvP for "fun." I'm just thankful Bungie nixed voice chat, I'm almost 30 and have a very low tolerance for the verbal diarrhea so often encountered in PvP arenas such as this. I do hope that there are more features added to the single player experience. Although, don't feel too left out, I've played the RAID over 14 times and only have 1 piece of raid gear for my Titan. And it's ugly at that so I don't even wear it. The motivation to hit Level 30 is virtually non existent by this point.
