I Need Defender Tips

I have been playing destiny for a while now, but most of that time has been spent as a hunter. But after a while playing as a hunter got boring so I decided to create a defender titan. Why? Because titans look the coolest out of all the classes (my opinion) and the defensive shield abilities looked like they would be fun to use. But the transition has been painful, especially in the crucible. As a hunter, I used my speed and cloaking to get the upper hand in pve and pvp. My grenades inflicted respectable damage and the cloaking allowed me to get the jump on unsuspecting opponents in pvp as well as allowing me to revive players in pve and line up sniper shots on deadlier enemies. The speed allowed me to escape bad situations in a hurry in both play modes. And then of course there was arcblade. When properly used, arcblade allowed me to get a large number of kills provided it was used in an area where warlocks could not fly away and opponents were close enough for me to reach before they could use either fist of havoc or voidblast. In pve arcblade was used defensively for emergency speed and armor. Playing as a defender has been different. The new movement type took some getting used to but being able to fly and strafe do have their own advantages, but it does feel much harder to evade enemy shots. any tips there would be welcome. I do like the stronger armor and faster regeneration however. Barrier melee has also been extremely useful in saving my life in both pve and pvp. The extra shield it provides is very nice for both game modes, and so far it has been my favorite part about the defender. But in crucible my attempt to trigger it often results in me getting shotgunned.... especially by that one shotgun of doom called "Invective." Defender grenades seem to work decently in pve, but with the exception of the magnetic grenade being stuck on a player, they seem to do far less damage than other grenades in the crucible. Is anyone else feeling my pain with defender grenades or do I just not know how to use them? And then finally, the area I really really have problems with, the shield bubble super. In pve I have used it to save both my life and the lives of fallen teamates, but you cant shoot out of it, and the buffs don't seem provide much of an edge even when you have the perk that augments their effect selected. The extra barrier is not very durable, and you have to sacrifice protection to use weapons of light. Also, if a pve enemy charges into your shield (say, a minotaur) you have to abandon your super and flee the area. In crucible the shield feels useless in every mode but control, but even in control it has limits. It for one, seems to be the easiest super to counter. I have had people fist of havoc into it, I have had people shatter it with golden gun, I have had people use voidblast equipped with lingering area of effect ability eat through the shield, I have been shot in the head by a sniper when I pop out to fire at a player even with extra shield, I had someone arclbade into it, and finally I have been instant killed in the shield by shoulder charge. It just feels useless in the crucible. To me it feels like the defender is underpowered, but when I look on these forums, there are people who say they do really well with it in the crucible as well as in pve. That makes me think I am just not using the defender properly. So if you took the time to read my long post, thank you, and any helpful tips you can provide, especially on proper use of the bubble shield would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I play as a Titan and personally haven't used Defender as much as I have Striker. The most I've used it was in PvP, But I will still share my experiences with it and against it and let you make of it what you will. Please keep in mind I haven't played PvP near as much as others and there is no doubt strategies better than mine, but a view at different play styles is always nice. Also, keep in mind that I am an average PvPer and by no means am I a beast. As you have already said, in PvE, it is definitely a life saver, especially when playing with friends and you get swarmed. I highly suggest equipping a shotgun to use with the bubble. When something charges in, aim for the crit and you can usually come out on top. There's also been times that I have used my bubble as a blockade and ran out the other side, mainly if there's a swarm of enemies rushing you. Them couple of precious seconds it buys you can mean the difference between life and death. As for PvP, I try to use my bubble at corners or behind any cover, keeping the line of sight on it to a minimal so that way by the time someone, say a hunter with golden gun, sees it, they are well within shotgun range. Step out and blast. Or if you're lucky and they blindly charge trying to rush you around a corner, once again, shotgun them down. Another thing I do is watch the minimap. ( Using the above strategy of popping it at a corner or behind cover) When you see an incoming enemy, toss down your grenade at the opposite edge, step back so the initial blast doesn't damage you, and when they round the corner, they are taking damage then give them a good ole fist smack. Though, the void grenade tends to give itself away Like you've stated before, it is easy to counter by all classes. Beware of Striker Titans if using the corner strategy as you have no warning to them about to use their super and smash you through the shield. Personally, I feel Striker is the hardest to counter when in the bubble, especially against panic supers. With both the Hunter and Warlock, you have a little warning and can attempt to prepare yourself on the fly for losing your bubble. On a round of Control, I once came across two Defender Titans, both with their bubbles up and overlapping at a Control point. One FoH killed them both, even through their shields. Hope that gives you a little insight to another players style.
