Mythological Representation in Destiny (Part 1 for now)

So this will be my first real full fledged topic. The subject matter I intend to explore will be the connections, and at times hints between Destiny and Norse Mythology and Imagery and what those connections may mean to the game and story/lore. This will be wordy so be prepared. And Thank you for Reading! **Also, disclaimer Wyrd, Urd etc. We are speaking of names/terms in Old Norse languages that I am using Anglo-cised version of for simplicity sake. It’s not easy to type out urðr and Urðarbrunnr for example, I do apologize. And for any other editing issues** First I wish to stress how much Nordic imagery is used within Destiny, and some possibly unnoticed, but I do NOT think unintentional choices Bungie has made. Here’s a few. First Destiny uses the Web of Wyrd as the opening loading symbol, that would be the Norse Web of Destiny. Nifty. More importantly is this image https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10102007257007818&set=a.10100356445187938.2529019.15718567&type=1 Remind you of anything from a movie? http://media.tumblr.com/cf0d23201e8a31a6829c7cc32915bfac/tumblr_inline_mm1rijhaUH1qz4rgp.png The reason these images are similar is that the Milky Way (and other night sky things hard to see with today’s light pollution) were often viewed as connected to the ash Yggdrasil. The connection between The arms of the trees that hold existence, and the Milky Way connected like those arms is surprisingly astute, and in ways cosmically accurate. Another good connection is that Guardians are a VERY good representation of those warriors chosen to be taken to Valhalla. First point here, we were warriors, each and every guardian comes back with the knowledge of how to use their weaponry, and in that connection it’s not a far leap to say we died in battle. The ghosts are our very own Valkyries, taking us to our halls (Oh yes, the Tower is our own Valhalla, where we select few are able to stay in preparation for the final battle, Ragnarok). Ragnarok and the Future War Cult are another idea I enjoy. The future war cult is, in essence, a cult that believes in a conflict not far from the idea of Ragnarok. Oh and my favorite little tidbit, Bungie chose Immigrant Song by Led Zepplin (about as Viking based as you can get) for their Live Action Trailer. =) Onwards to some heavier, more deeply buried topics, oh constant reader, carry on with me. First let us explore the fact that the game is named Destiny, and in the opening loading scene Bungie chose the Web of Wyrd as our loading symbol. Wyrd, for the many that do not know, roughly translates into Destiny or Fate. The connection between this symbol and therefore word choice, and Destiny is important. The Norse understanding of Fate/Destiny differed some from what has become the more widely accepted view as “Your Pre-ordained future.” This concept to a degree still exists within Norse mythology, but it is complicated. To understand the Norse concept of Destiny it is necessary to understand their mythological view of the cosmos. Existence, the world, is centered upon Yggdrasil, a relatively well known concept lately (Thank you Thor, really, Truly, Thank you). The importance of Yggdrasil is in its roots, it draws its nourishment from the Well of Urd. Urd in essence also translates to Destiny (Wyrd/Urd here the similarity there, Anglo-cising!) The waters of the well are a representation of the past which Yggdrasil (The Present, existence) grows from. The tree grows and from the leaves on its branches water falls back into the well. To summarize this, time cycles, past, present, future, returns to past. Also at the base of the tree, at the well, are the Norns, the woman that carve into Yggdrasil the Destiny of each of the world’s inhabitants. These carvings are expectations, or potential, but it is the inhabitants will and actions that determine the outcome. Free Will. The tree grows and exists based on those actions, and sheds new water, from these actions back into the well (Time) which starts the process over, a new or possibly same carving to be made next time through. Now that you read through that Text Block, the “Why” this is important to Destiny the game. Time is intimately important in how the game has been unfolding, it is stressed within every context that involve the Vex, and further goes into connections with Rasputin, humanities future, time Travel. There are threads on it, message me if you need a few, but look #story or #lore, they are there. Anyways… We are those warriors in the present, making Destiny (The water that drops back to the well, making the Past). Our goal, the drive behind the game, is to win, for humanity to survive. We wish to win Ragnarok, something which Fate has ordained humanity will lose. How do we accomplish that. Rasputin is one great topic here to explore, there are theories with a decent amount of solid grounding beneath them. That Rasputin is the Vex or becomes the Vex. We know that the Vex exist before and after the current times, but time Travel makes that possible. One excellent potential evidences of this connecting is the Vex’s reverence of the Heart. Much as there is a Shard of the Traveller kept by the Hive, I believe (I don’t think it is a huge stretch) that the heart is a similar shard of the Darkness. In the Grimoire card for the Darkness many believe that the IT described is the Darkness and the speaker is Rasputin. This is very believable. In that connection Rasputin learns from the Darkness, and at the heart of the learning process is a degree of reverence for that teacher. Rasputin, arguably, revered the Darkness as the Vex. Rasputin could be the first Vex to revere IT. (The First does get complicated by Time Travel, I know, Time Travel is messy). Another target of the future changing the past is the Traveler, there are theories that the Traveler was made by mankind to prevent the collapse. If the Vex move through Time why not the Traveler travels through time as well? It could be, I am still working on it. But this is almost 3 pages long in word so I am going to bring it to a close. For those who made it to the bottom, thank you, keep on searching! Posted my next part in my comments, on Egyptian Mythology

I am going to handle my Egyptian section a bit differently than I did the Norse section because the Mythology here is more based in event parallels than symbolism. Also, I am much less familiar with Egyptian mythology, which is also an immensely complex and debatable religion in its own right. So, if you disagree with my take on its myths or I leave something out, please (Truly) comment; let me know. I am interested in learning more both in the Destiny Universe AND real life. In my explorations of Destiny’s mythos I have found an attraction to the idea of cycles reflected within the events/stories that occur. This should be fairly visible in my examination of the Norse mythos within Destiny. Likewise I approached Egypt with the same eye. As such I was attracted to connections between two key figures/stories. These are the Story of Osiris, which for other lore delves should resound as we have heard names from it, primary of these being Isis. The other figure is Ra, the Sun God, pretty easy to draw a line from the Sun to the Light. That in mind, oh constant reader, I will begin. Ahead of time, thank you for reading. This will be pretty much two parts, a summary of the Myths I am using first, then how those Myths correlate with Destiny’s events. The legend of Osiris is one of the most well documented mythologies that has survived, and to start I will give a summary then show the connections within Destiny between this mythos and Destiny. Osiris starts as one of the early Pharaohs of Egypt. He is portrayed as an excellent ruler, who often Travels to his people and teaches them how to cultivate the land and order/civilization. Osiris has a brother, Set, who is attributed as a force of chaos and unrest. Set murders Osiris and dismembers his corpse, spreading it throughout Egypt. The method of his death/dismemberment vary, differing narrative is common in Egyptian mythos so I will not delve into these differences, though there may be some good lore there, but for later. It is Osiris’ wife Isis that collects his dismembered body, the accounts as to who helps her in the collection and restoration of Osiris’ body varies as well, again, but it is the process that is important. The dismemberment and collection is connected with the burial rituals of Egypt, and connected with renewal. Once all the body parts (minus one, which was eaten by a fish) are collected through her Magic Isis is able to restore Osiris for one night to conceive Horus. He then again dies. Isis, who has begotten Horus, goes into hiding to protect Horus from Osiris’ opposite, Set, while Horus grows. Through those years Isis protects, heals, and nurtures Horus until his is able to confront Set. The times following this Horus and Set battle over the control of Egypt. Horus eventually is victorious after many years and many battles and trials. With the defeat of Set, Horus can finally give Osiris the proper funeral rights. These rights allow Osiris to renew in Duat, the underworld, where he will then rule as the lord of the dead, but continually start the renewing cycle of life. In this he is celebrated in the yearly agricultural cycle (which in Egypt is also connected with the floods) Which is the new growth, life, and reaping (death) of the crops simultaneously with the flooding seasons. The presence of Osiris and his nature of renewal carries importance in the journey of the sun in Egyptian mythology as well. The Sun, Ra, starts its journey every day as a newborn at sunrise (often actually depicted even as another god, or aspect, aspects are extremely important to Egyptian mythos) reaching maturity as Ra at noon, and then elderly and death at sunset, where he enters the underworld, Duat. He travels through the underworld and then will meet Osiris, who, through his regenerative powers, will allow Ra to renew to be born again for the next day. Now what all this means for Destiny. I will explore a couple of theories in this section, but in both the Traveler represents Osiris. Like Osiris’ Set, the Traveler has an opposite, who is referenced as a Dark Mirror. An interesting point right here is that Set IS Osiris’ brother, implying a relationship between the Darkness and the Traveler. Set is able to kill and dismember Osiris, much as the Traveler is defeated, and parts of it are found removed from the whole, such as the shard in the Hives possession. In order for the Traveler to heal these pieces must be friend and returned, much as Osiris must have his body restored to be able to be brought back to life. With Isis at this point Osiris begets Horus. Horus can easily be attributed to being mankind (I would say Guardians, but I believe it is mankind as a whole, not just Guardians). But who is Isis then? Rasputin, it is often accepted, refers to the Traveler as Isis. Personally I think it is a bit more complex than that. Isis is a maternal and protective figure, which correlates very well with the Traveler. The years of Isis protection of Horus correlates with the Travelers protection of man while we recover from the collapse, till we are strong enough to journey outwards again and combat the Darkness. Therefore at this point I have two theories towards Isis’ identity. One embraces the Egyptian habit, and norm of the combining of mythological figures, and aspects. As such Osiris and Isis can both be the Traveler, just different aspects of it. The aspect of the Traveler that is Osiris is the aspect that brings humanity prosperity, knowledge, and power. Isis is a figure associated with magic and maternal protection. It is this aspect of the Traveler that protects humanity and gives us, well, space magic. Once Humanity, like Horus, is able to combat the Darkness we do, and with our victory over the Darkness, we are able to allow the Traveler to finally be able to heal. This is well correlated as well in that it takes the defeat of Set for Horus to be able to perform the proper funerary rights which then allow Osiris to begin to heal. The second theory I have also toyed some with the idea that Isis is in fact the City or Earth, which would explain why only earth appears to have been defended by Rasputin, while all other parts of the Solar System were left to the darkness. Furthermore this would work well with the idea that mankind is the progeny of the traveler and earth, Osiris and Isis respectively. Another point I examined is the cycle of Ra, who can be equated with light. Without the revivification of Osiris, Ra (sensibly equitable with the Light) will remain in the Darkness, the dead underworld, and will be unable to bring light and life to the living world. With the defeat of the Heart we grant Osiris the ability to revive itself, and in the process the ability for the light to begin to renew itself. Last I want to point to the idea that Osiris represents a reviving force for mankind much as the Traveler. The Traveler has the ability, through its Ghosts to bring life back to the dead. This echoes of Osiris abilities to bring life back to the dead as well. Ra again is a good example of this, but furthermore, one of Osiris names is actually “king of the living” this being because the dead who are in Duat are not living there, hence their name “the living ones.” It is Osiris, and the contact with him which brings them to their blessed life, much as our contact as Guardians with the Ghosts (Little Light) brings us back from death. There are further musings to be made, but again I have given a heavy block of text but to the constant reader that has made it this far, I thank you, and look forward to further comments. Cheers and happy hunting!

In one of the Darkness Grimoire Cards there is a reference that maybe Rasputin initiated 'Voluspa', which in Norse mythology describes the end of the world and its rebirth. More interestingly after the worlds end follows a 'wolftime' and a 'golden age' The wolf symbolism is strong in Destiny. There are multiple grimoire cards of the dreams of Alpha Lupi (which are considered to be the memories of the traveller.) Alpha Lupi (a star in constellation wolf) means first wolf (connection to fenris wolf in Voluspa?).

    • Beautiful information here! The connection fascinates me, especially since I have a particular fondness for Nordic mythology. This does seem to play into some ethereal concepts I had in regards to all if this being a repeat, in some form or another. Very interesting.

      • I really appreciate you putting this together. Maybe you can add edits to expand the original post as it kind of peters off without a strong closing statement. You could also include and cite other peoples' comments to make the top post a master resource. Adding sci Fi elements to mythology really drives it home for me. I feel heros like Habr who created the vog relic from the gorgon closely represent other mythological heroes and legends. I wonder who we will see next.

      • This is really a nice post. I have also been getting strong Greco-Roman myth connections but I haven't sat down to make anything coherent about it yet. Namely the connections to the Titans. The Ghost Fragment: Mysteries mentions Titanomachy, the war between the gods and their predecessors (The Titans). Also The Traveler shares ties to Prometheus (bringing fire, or "Light", to humanity) and Atlas, in a reverse sort of way. The Traveler and humanity both support each other (Atlas supports the weight of the world on his shoulders). Another random thing that stuck out was the fact there are three Sol Progeny in a garden and that makes me think of the Garden of the Hesperides. Anyways, kind of rambling here but I think it's worth exploring. Also I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on The Nine.

          • I've been thinking about the Final Story encounter - the Sol Progeny. Why are they called the Sol Progeny - Children of Sol? Why are the ruins on Venus so "black garden-esque"? Imminent, Eschaton, Primeval. The Sol Progeny clearly is named for its dominion over all time. The Black Garden supposedly exists outside of space and time, so the Sol Progeny shouldn't directly link back to our solar system in the way that it does. This seems to be a telling sign that the Vex somehow originated here, in this solar system. The ghost fragment from venus states that the traveler is bringing a 'rebirth' to venus - clearly there was civilization there before. or after, or now. This idea of time as a cycle seems fantastic to me, because one of the themes of Destiny is 'survival'. How better to survive and ensure continued existence than to write yourself into the very laws of the universe, or turn time into a feedback loop whereupon you are just continually improving and each time cycle becomes a "revision" Then there's the quote in the exo card: "Why were the exo minds created so similar to humans? I think somebody wanted to live forever..." Do we know that the exo weren't created by the Warminds?

            • The myth of the Einherjar supports your ideas. Warriors rising nightly to prepare to fight next to Odin on the final day against Ragnarök. The Valkyries would be the Ghosts. Don't also forget that Yggdrasil is the center of the nine worlds which we hear The Nine repeated a lot. Xur is an agent of the Nine. Norse mythology, kind of like Mayan mythos, is cyclical. From destruction comes life. The Golden Age was destroyed and now we have this cycle.
