Do you think we leveled up too fast?

So I let my XBLG run out on the 10th of this month and stopped playing Destiny on my XB360 around a week before that. I already had around 120 hours in the game and a level 29 Titan. I had a good range of Exotics and had completed the raid. Now I'm sat here contemplating Destiny as someone who has been able to sit back and take a third persons perspective of the game. I've seen the complaints about the Iron Banner too and this set me on a path of contemplation about my experience while playing the game. Now when I see all the people talking about their exotic weapons and armor and how they did the Raid and got the Mythoclast I come to the conclusion that Destiny could have worked so much better had everything been very much harder to obtain. I believe that if even the hardcore players were grinding through to levels say 15 to 20 now and exotics were still a mystery to everyone who had bought the game at release that the game would possibly be seen in a better light. If engrams dropped at a far lesser rate wouldn't the excitement of getting a fabled blue engram drop from an enemy seem so much more exciting than it does now? And wouldn't the shiny new level 16 weapon the Cryptarch unveiled for you seem like a much more sought after addition to your inventory? Wouldn't you then enjoy the difference in play style it would bring to you using this new Level 16 Scout Rifle after using the level 15 Hand Cannon you've had for a week? Seems to me Destiny was a flood rather than the slow trickle that would have had us eagerly awaiting the day we could boast to our friends about that purple engram we found. Rumor of the Raid would be wildfire and Bungie would have had time to fix much before it became a problem as a bonus. TLDR: I'd have liked Destiny more if I were still grinding to level 20 now rather than hitting 29 after only 3 weeks. How about you?

  • You've hit the core problem of this game, but there is no solution. Destiny was balanced perfectly for its content. Slower leveling would have made it a drag - not enough content. Faster leveling would have shortened it to two weeks - again, not enough content. The game isn't unfinished - it's just short, plain and simple. Small loot table with small vendor selections that use simple currency from a small world... ...all wrapped up in a small game. A very fun game, absolutely, but a small game.

I'm curious. How many people here think the DLC will reignite the game? And if so, for how long?

Oh believe my guys I'm with you on that score too. But that's just lazy programming and could be changed with a decent amount of effort. After all how hard could it be to add a few random enemy types or leave some modes in which seem to be timed for some unknown reason. I just think on the whole the game gave little to aim for because while content was sparse it gave us that content in so short a time. PS: Still getting to grips with this forum lol

        • The game is a technically gorgeous accomplishment that was put into the hands of a game balance team that had absolutely no idea what they were doing. As a game designer, and someone who runs the premiere gaming design convention in the country (METATOPIA), I am ashamed to have this team in the same industry as me. Someone earlier said that Destiny is the Waterworld of video games. I have to agree. And the arrogance of this team of morons to just go blithely along without listening to anyone will be their undoing. Do you know what would save Destiny? Turn it off for a month, fix it, and start everyone over at level 1 with a proper advancement path that is designed by people who know what they are doing. They stand a better chance of retaining their player base next year by doing that than this absurd path they are on.

          • I agree. Destiny should have had 100+ hours of story. Not 6+. Bungie is scrambling to pick up the pieces of this fractured game. Its sad. But that's what happens when a third party buys their way into a game final year of development.

Yep. Fast levelling just turns the game into an arms race. I've just started a new character and am going round shooting the crap out of anything that moves. If you try any of the 'gung ho' stuff that tends to creep in at higher levels, you end up having your arse handed to you on a platter. Low level weapons make you think more about the combat :-)

The problem isnt how fast you lvl, it is how bare bones the actual content is, and how the dlc will add very little, if you figure that we have four places to travel (earth, moon, Venus, and mars) and each dlc will add a few missions to one place or another, it is not worth it, for 15 or 20 or however much each dlc costs going by the current model should include a new planet with at least six story missions 2 strikes and one raid...but that wont happen

            • Perhaps but there is no endgame when you hit 29 which is the larger problem regardless of how fast you get there.

I think a lot of people were expecting a Diablo 3-esque game, in a Starcraft-esque setting, but with FPS mechanics. Or maybe, Halo meets Diablo 3. Instead, it's World of Warcraft gear progression, but only up to World 1-4 of Super Mario Bros. in terms of content, with 1-5, 6, 7 and 8 available as paid DLC in the future. Only thing is, don't expect to see Worlds 2 through 8 anytime soon.

              • Yep. Double the levelling time/exp needed and I'd be happy - if the ways to level up were not so repetitive.

                • I don't think we leveled up too fast. I do think the raid came too soon, which required people to grind like crazy to level up faster, causing the big disparity among the casual and hardcore players.

                  • Bungie said you'd reach the highest level gained by experience within a few hours of play. It was designed to be this fast for some reason

The problem basically stems from the fact that they tried to include many mmo features and rpg elements into an fps with a standard length of 6-8 hours. You just can't do that. There's a reason that pretty much every fps that has ever combined rpg and loot mechanics is typically longer than 6-8 hours. (That I am aware of at least) So, bottom line is, there is far too little content for a game designed in this manner and the problem further still from there is they expect us to pay to get any more of it.

                    • What ppl dont realise is how much time played they put into reaching level 30 or close to. You put close to 100 hours into phase one of a game. Its not that fast. You think its fast then your playing alot which isnt a bad thing just realise the more you play the sooner you reach the end.

                      • [This was a reply but I liked it so made it a comment] For me if they did raise the levels and have a new range of super hard to get Ultimate gear while adding sparrow racing and at the very least some asteroids I could shoot with my loading ship. Plus a huge range of new and interesting bounties and a significant level gap in the Iron Banner. An option to leave green engrams lying on the ground (or even better a special ability which turns them into actual Hive droppings which stain the boots of my team mates for a day and make them have those cartoon flies and vapors animate on them). A rare public event that starts in the tower where you and all the other tower dwellers have to fight off an attack by all the enemy races with extra special loot drops if you succeed. A love scene with the Queen and difficult duel with her brother to get the chance. Matchmaking for the Raid and AOE mic chat. Mission variants that don't just add up to higher damage modifiers. A one time use at the very least 60 second timed "punch the Cryptarch" opportunity. And a free T-shirt (not really but gotta try eh?). It'd get me hyped again. ;-)

                            • this would apply nicely if there were more things to do in destiny. more mission variety, more locations etc. but having to grind more than we are now, in this barren excuse of a game would be utterly ridiculous. and i'm afraid it would be a turn off to many. the appeal that this game has is the proverbial constantly dangling carrot.....you get rewarded and teased along the way and it somehow makes it more bearable that we have so little content to work with.

                            • I started a week late. I only play two or three hours a night. I only leveled one class. A hunter at 27. I will not level up another class. It's the same story and missions. The same cut scenes. I hope the DLC is worth the wait.

                            • What the actual fuk.... I've been playin quite a bit these last few weeks. I still await my legendary weapon. I never had any legendary item drop, i had to buy exotics because I did not get the bounty and I've been playing IB nonstop just to not get any fukking loot even after some extra ordinary feats. At this moment I'm contemplating throwing my controller towards the screen whilst screaming all kinds of profanity om Bungies general direction. Sigh... It IS hard to get to a level where you can play toplvl missions if you have a live. And I sacrificed a great portion of my freetime already. Lvl 28 missions ARE hard. But I agree they should have smears the lvling out over the story. People just go play pvp because it lvls so much faster.

                            • There would have needed to be more content. Most games, if you run straight through the story, you end up about 3/4 leveled. That way you have the desire you go back and reach the cap, and you're not at the cap before you have the opportunity to end the story content. Sadly, Destiny was right on track with that. Yea it was too easy to get to 20 (I did it in 2 days), but the story was so short that you're at around 17 or 18 upon completion.

                            • Nope, not fast enough honestly; raid gear is retardedly hard to get and there are no missions with a great need to be above PvP 26, save for the raid.

                              • Yes, whether you tried to level fast or not. I think we did level to 20 waaaay too fast. There is really no effort that has to be put into leveling from 1-20. I've heard stories of people standing close to the people shooting at the loot cave and getting lvl 20 without ever firing a shot. It took them a while I bet, but I do believe it was done. I understand and agree with getting xp from kills by other I your fire team, but not by just standing next to some random person and not putting any effort in towards the kill. I have a titan alt and his only job at the moment is to do a first time public event in the cosmodrome and farm spin metal while waiting on the event. I then have him go to the tower to give it reward to my warlock. Just by doing this for a few days I have him half way to 20 and have only done the story far enough to do the patrol on earth

To clarify for some people who seem to be missing the concept: The grind is real. It's a staple of the game whether or not you are at level 20 or 29. But grinding at level 29 three weeks after the game is out feels like more of a pointless venture than grinding with higher levels and subsequently better gear in sight. As it stands even the casual player is grinding a level 27/28 character for motes of light, strange coins and ascendant materials to get ANOTHER exotic to add to their armory. Legendary and even Exotics are nothing to brag about because everyone has one or more less than a month into the ten year game. My post supposes that had the higher levels been a goal which took at least the casual player into the first DLC date the grind may have seemed a little more worthwhile. Perhaps not. But I truly believe that the game feels like it lacks content more because that content is open to the players so early leaving nothing but DLC yet months away to look forward to. And further to that we could see players give up the grind and leave Destiny's fields of battle bare. It's with that fear I am prompted to try and help Bungie with some low resource ideas to help keep people playing in threads like this one: http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/72602188/0/0/1 As a counter to the lack of content argument I suggest you pop onto World of Tanks (it's free to play) and grab up a level ten tank without spending any real money. Win a game with it still intact then come back and tell me how long it took you. Or for a different perspective: Without spending any real money go and win a Ranked Draft PvP match with Thresh in League of Legends. And again tell me how long it took. Then compare that to your first Raid completion in Destiny. I should say that despite the low chances of that actually happening if anyone does do that you should then go back and "support" those games and the hard working developers who make them. ;-)
