Playing to Win and the "That's Cheap!" Scrub Mentality

This post is a result of people complaining about others using "cheap" tactics in order to gain the advantage and win games (shotguns, rocket launchers, supers, etc). The whole notion of there being some sort of chivalry, nobility, or ethical rulebook that we can apply to video games is nothing short of a losing mentality. There is no respect or moral platform when it comes to winning a game. Cheating is doing something that no one else in the game can do. Everything else is perfectly acceptable and within the bounds of the game. This is the best article I have ever read regarding "scrubs", being cheap, and what it means to play to win. The article is linked above. Here are some excerpts: "A scrub is not just a bad player. Everyone needs time to learn a game and get to a point where they know what they're doing. The scrub mentality is to be so shackled by self-imposed handicaps as to never have any hope of being truly good at a game. You can practice forever, but if you can't get over these common hangups, in a sense you've lost before you even started. You've lost before you even picked which game to play. You aren't playing to win" "Scrubs are likely to label a wide variety of moves and tactics as "cheap." For example, performing a throw in fighting games is often called cheap. A throw is a move that grabs an opponent and damages them even while they're defending against all other kinds of attacks. Throws exist specifically to allow you to damage opponents who block and don't attack. As far as the game is concerned, throwing is an integral part of the design—it's meant to be there—yet scrubs construct their own set of principles that state they should be totally impervious to all attacks while blocking. Scrubs think of blocking as a kind of magic shield which will protect them indefinitely. Throwing violates the rules in their heads even though it doesn't violate any actual game rule"

  • I love that article. It totally changed the way I think about competitive games. If everyone can do it and it's allowed by the rules, it's fair game. "Cheap" is just another way of saying "effective move/weapon/strategy/etc. that I haven't learned to use or counter." If you think something is OP, the solution is not to cry for a nerf, it's to use it yourself, or figure out its weakness and exploit it. If an effective thing you used does get nerfed, move on to the next OP thing (because in any system with variation there will always be a best move/weapon/strategy/etc. and scrubs will always call it OP.) I can admit I'm not a great Destiny PvPer, but at least I'm not a scrub. To my fellow bad PvPers: please, just admit to yourself that you lose because you are bad, not because ARs/Shotguns/Bladedancers/Sunsingers/Defenders/Campers/Flavor-of-the-week-Exotic/Crucible/Iron Banner are OP. Use them yourself and get better, or accept that PvP is not for you, but for the love of what ever you hold sacred, stop complaining about things being broken.

  • I played a lot of Soul Calibur 4 in my day, one night I was drunk and was rolling people online when I ran across another Mitsurugi, he wrecked me with what I considered cheap tactics at the time and grabs etc. In my drunken fury I messaged him with the typical banter and I got the message back that changed my entire view on games. He told me "this isn't tiddlywinks, this is a fight to the death." And from that day forth any time I lose to something I always ask myself what I should be doing instead of labeling something cheap, OP, lame, cheese etc

    • Yeah I read that article or one similar when I first started playing fighting games and it game me great perspective and attitude on competitive fighting games but I don't apply it outside of that.

      • ...seems like a discussion that would get flamed in #Destiny and #Offtopic... I have no idea if this is in the wrong forum or not...
