Why weapons have double damage stats?

Ok, I'm almost level 27 with my warlock, but I haven't figured out yet why some weapons have two numbers in the damage section... For example, all vanguard, crucible and faction automatic rifles are 248/300 damage... What is the 300 value? Critical? Max damage in certain conditions? I really must sound stupid, but I can't figure it out... Thanks!

  • Attack power isn't the weapons damage. Impact is literally the damage per shot value. Attack has something to do with how well the weapon will perform against higher level enemies. I'm guessing it's a multiplier of sorts. This might be why the cap is 300 on legendary weapons and max level is 30. See the connection? This is why you can have a lower level weapon out damage a higher level weapon with more attack power. Obviously once you're fighting higher level enemies the lower level weapon will start to drop off. I would love to see bungie clean up weapon stats and make it a little more user friendly... I can't take credit for any of this information. I found it on a random post by another user. Sadly, I can't post his/her name, but I won't say the information was my own.
