My Thoughts on Destiny

This is just a collection of some of my thoughts on the game so far. I have heard a lot of the complaints of the other people on these forums, and often I sympathize/agree with them (provided they are put forth in a reasonably constructive manner). That said, I have enjoyed the game. In many ways I think if this were a title produced by a new/up and coming developer I would be rather pleased, compared to a lot of the B-list titles out there it is great; but the issue is it came from Bungie, and a lot of us expected the extraordinary. For starters, an issue near and dear to my heart, sniping. I guess it's not an issue most people seem to care about, which is why i don't see this issue on the forums really, but the sniper seems to have been nerfed pretty hard. I've always liked playing as a sniper, I was one of those guys in Halo 2 racing to the rifle spawn, and as long as that rifle had half a clip left in it, leave the freshly dropped rocket launcher on the ground. So i was disappointed to see what an uphill battle it is to snipe in Destiny PVP, especially since the game seems to advocate a "play it your way" philosophy. Why is there no targeting reticle for the rifle if you aren't zoomed in? A lot of people may jump up and say "its not a close range weapon" but I don't find that satisfactory. Sniping from the hip was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences in Halo multiplayer. As it stands now if I get surprised while looking down the scope, I have no means to defend myself. The rifle is the ONLY gun with no way to aim from the hip, as though in this fantasy world you can magically aim a fusion rifle but not a sniper outside of a scope. The majority of the maps themselves are small and/or cluttered, and finding a clean sightline is difficult/impractical. Honestly, this issue is the one least likely to every be addressed as I think most people are rather pleased with them, but even when I do get a chance to draw a bead on someone across the map, they can accurately and effectively riddle me with an auto rifle. The accuracy and range on those things is dumb. I know this is being addressed (and eagerly anticipated) but I question why this was ever a good idea. And, OMG, WHAT IS UP WITH THAT RED GLEAM? There is nothing subtle about it, it is bright as day. Taking in the 'flavor' of it for a moment... there is NO fictional universe where a sniper would use a rifle that did that! But from a practical standpoint, given how tough it already is to use the rifle, if I want to aim, which I can't do any other way but through the scope, I need to shout to everyone with even a peripheral line of sight, "HEY! EVERYONE LOOK! I'M AIMING HERE!" ... So, let me get this straight, I am not supposed to snipe from upclose because I have no reticle but I'm not supposed to aim long range because I reveal my position? To polish it all off, in the scenario where I overcome all these obstacles: I find a somewhat concealed position with a decent sightline, manage not to get stumbled across by someone else (because I can't shoot back), get a bead on someone and jerk up my scope at the last second so my scope beacon isn't seen, take careful aim and... "BAM, headshot! Sucker never even saw me coming"... his deathcam shows my exact position with a bright red outline. I can expect him to return presently, kicking the crap out of me from across the map with his SUROS Regime. The sniper in Destiny hasn't been balanced, it's been handicapped. Which is disappointing, especially as one of the classes is (in theory) designed to fill that role. I am grateful to the 1.0.2 patch, and I'm glad that it seems that feedback is being heard. I look forward to the balancing patches promised for PVP. I feel that most of you who don't feel they are needed aren't being unbiased as to the balance of the game. You are just pleased the game rewards you for playing the way you prefer to play. One thing, please don't forget the fusion rifle. It charges way to fast for what it does. And if people are going to keep it in a perpetual state of 'half spun up' maybe they should be burning ammunition while they do. As for the story/content... well, you've heard it all before. All I can say is I am eagerly awaiting some form of official response from Bungie on what is going to happen regarding the derth of meaningful storyline and non-repetitive endgame content. I'm going to pop my game disk in this evening and play some strikes, and tomorrow you'll find me in the VOG... but I can't say I will still be playing in a month as it stands. For me, its not that the game is awful, I think we just expected more from you guys [Bungie]. I've been a huge fan since Halo CE. Ever since the Halo 2 Vidocs, Bungie is where I wanted to work some day (right now im still treading water writing PHP in web development :-/). Hell, I even dropped by your unmarked offices when visiting Seattle to ambush a few developers on their way back from lunch (they happily chatted and gave me a T-shirt ^_^, made my week). All this is to say, I had a lot of faith in Bungie as an entity, something bordering on hero worship if im unabashedly honest. But I feel let down, the depth I expected just isn't there. I can't believe this is the game you intended to make. But everyday I look for some sort of explanation, for you all to TALK TO US... and everyday I find none the feeling shifts a bit from disappointment towards betrayal. We believe you are listening, now it's time for you to speak. TL;DR - Im glad some PVP balancing is happening but the 'role' of sniper is unfairly handicapped; no hip fire, bright red beaming light from the scope, death cam highlighting, etc. Some fusion rifles charge way too fast for one hit kills from that large a distance. Thanks for 1.0.2 but the story is absent and we're awaiting a response. P.S. There's a good chance I inspire a lot of contrasting opinions, but lets keep them civil shall we?
