Here's to hoping Bungie keeps loot rates balanced post-engram patch...

I really hope Bungie adjusts the drop rate of legendary engram's after they change the decryption rate with the upcoming patch. Beware, I use a little bit of math in this post. TL;DR: solely changing decrypt rates will dramatically boost the probability of getting legendary gear. Either acknowledge this as the intended effect OR lower the legendary engram's drop rate to maintain the same net probability. Open spoiler for remainder of post. [spoiler] The engram loot system is a two part RNG system, however that is simply for gameplay considerations. Since it is all RNG we can combine the two steps and determine an overall likelihood of getting a rare or a legendary item. (P_J = sum over i P_i*P_ij, where P_J is the overall probability of getting j (a legendary item for example) and P_i is the probability of getting a particular engram color and P_ij is the probability that engram turns into j upon decryption) Currently the chance of getting a legendary piece of gear comes from decrypting blue or purple engram's (green engrams have not been observed to produce legendaries and exotic engrams produce exotics with 100% probability) Each engram has its own probability of dropping when you kill a mob (P_b for blue and P_p for purple). Likewise each has its probability of decrypting into a purple item (P_bp fora blue engram becoming purple, and P_pp for a purple engram becoming purple) therefore the overall probability of getting a purple item after killing a mob (P_P) is P_b*P_bp+P_p*P_pp. The patch notes have said they will increase P_bp and P_pp with no mention of what they intend to do with P_b and P_p (engram drop rates). If no change is made then the the overall chance P_P will increase dramatically because P_pp will be close to 100% rather than the ~10-15% it currently is (and the remaining chance will produce an exotic...) and P_bp will increase as well. My final point is that the 1.0.2 patch doesn't necessarily change anything substantive about the game. All it does is remove the crappiness of decrypting a purple into a blue without necessarily actually giving you more purples. This isn't something I'm complaining about, just didn't see this idea being talked about in these forums. (I actually hope they do this, its too easy to gear up in my opinion, get rep and buy your gear with P_P=100%... Anyway...) [/spoiler] Edit: typo
