What Destiny was supposed to be

Please note this is a repost of Onionsoft's OP: This thread is a collection of posts and my thoughts that show how Destiny's development changed DRASTICALLY within its last year. It is the reason why the story is lacking, the missions are repetitive, and why there are grimoire cards. A lot of shady stuff went down during the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014. Anyway, let's start off with what the Story was supposed to be like: STORY: This reddit post from a deleted thread http://postimg.org/image/80it9ix8x/ explains how Destiny's story was originally during E3 2013. Bungie.net user Diver2441 sums up all of this here: (Key parts are BOLDED for the lazy) So recently a Reddit thread came to light detailing what Destiny's narrative looked like in 2013, and it's very different from the ailing excuse for a story we're presented with today: the Traveler bringing the darkness, Crow, different progression through planets and even considerable cut areas. So it becomes apparent that between mid to late 2013 and launch, Bungie gutted the story. Now this is where it gets good, something else happened back in late 2013 before the story was gutted; Joe Staten, Bungie's former lead writer left. Some may think it coincidence, but I think not. Now the Reddit thread (which has mysteriously disappeared) outlined a story sprawling across a considerably larger solar system, and including a number of characters and factions who never so much as appear in the full game. The prime example of this is Crow, the character/faction who was set out to expose the Traveler and Speaker for in fact bringing the darkness along with the Traveler, and not the Golden Age. A specific reference to Crow can be found in the above video at 1:01, where a mission would have you assist Crow in looting the Archive on venus for details on the Vex Gatelord (which is in fact a mission we end up doing in the main game, but Crow is clearly not a part of it). The Gatelord was said to contain a way to access a pre-Collapse AI construct who had the ability to expose the Traveler, and we can see this in the form of the inaccessible Bunker RAS2. Even in the PvP, we see a reference to "faction wars" at 1:20 in the video, so it appears that justification and explanation for the different factions in the tower was cut as well. Destiny's current half assed story starts to make a little more sense when we apply the context that the entire narrative was gutted less than a year before launch, and remade without Bungie's lead writer. Why Joe left, and why Bungie felt the need to completely gut the story of the game and cut huge areas is beyond me, but it's abundantly obvious that there's a lot more going on than meets the eye. WHAT THE STORY WAS RE-WRITTEN INTO: Grimoire Cards. I'm currently trying to find the post where I discovered this Check Edit2 for Source, but basically back in February 2014, a man was hired to write all the Grimoire Cards. This was clearly the solution to trying to incorporate as much story as possible with what little story was actually in the game. This also is most likely the reason why there is no Grimoire UI in-game, because it was far too close to release to actually incorporate such a thing. UNUSED LOCATIONS AND FEATURES: Continuing from Diver2441's post, he mentions: If we look at an article from 2013 and the reveal ViDoc ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwOUi4JDC4o ) , it becomes very obvious that the game we have today is vastly different from what it was as little as around a year ago. For starters there are references to areas such as Old Chicago, the ghost fleet in the rings of Saturn, Charlemagne's Vault, and others that very clearly never made it into the full game, despite being fully made and playable around a year ago. Additionally, at 3:24 in the video above, we see an in game location in The Reef, and from 3:43 - 3:51 we see a pine forested area in game that never saw the light of day as well. Even in our own back yard of Old Russia in the retail games, we have locked off areas such as King's Watch, the Jovian Complex, and the Seraphim Vault, none of which are even mentioned in the retail game today. CUT CONTENT BEING RESOLD AS DLC (POSSIBLY): This video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-osssAKgEc ) shows that the majority of the first two expansions of DLC is potentially already on the disc! Even in the beta, areas such as the King's Watch and Seripham Vault were accessible through glitches and yet are not available in the full game (Actually, these places aren't even mentioned in the DLC either!) More proof about these areas can be shown through the data dumps at http://db.destinytracker.com I want to note here that this doesn't mean the content is actually finished, but the idea that it could be is annoying and makes sense given the amount of content that had already been cut. ANOTHER COINCIDENCE: Along with Bungie's Lead Writer departing for unknown reasons, we can't forget about Marty O'Donnell being fired too. We're all aware that the situation had to do with salary, but when Marty left, there was a clear bitterness between him and Bungie. Bungie had changed, and the lead writer had recognized it too. Was it Activision? Probably. But we're not being told the full story and I don't expect us to find out unfortunately. WHAT BUNGIE SHOULD DO: There are a variety of options Bungie can do to fix these problems. GIVE US THE HELD-BACK CONTENT FOR FREE: Unfortunately, this isn't very likely given Activision's greed and contracts already settled in to sell this content later. Some could also argue that it's a good thing this content is being held-back so that the game will stay alive for much longer, although I personally disagree given the lack of content available at launch. GIVE US JUST THE STORY MISSIONS FOR FREE: This is a bit more reasonable and would solve the overall complaint with Destiny. We know there is a story being held back greatly, and we should not let them sell this to us as DLC. GIVE US A SCHEDULE AND COMMUNICATE BETTER: This is my final plea to Bungie. The game is already out; we don't need to be left in the dark anymore. They need to tell us when content is being released and what we can expect so that we can voice our opinions better and prevent them from making more mistakes. THOUGHTS? I know this thread is extremely long in details, but I think it needs to be seen. The Destiny today is not the Destiny we were promised or the one Bungie had even imagined. Locations, ship customization, a real story, and other deleted content were all things planned/created before last year and are all gone now. Something must be done. (I will continue to edit this post as more info comes along). EDIT1: Source to Diver2441's post: http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/70651356/0/0 EDIT2: More details about the Grimoire cards and the fact that all of this "cutting out content" was very recent. Posted by Reddit user /u/mrdabu: ...Moreover, basic game elements were removed - in the developer commentary for the gameplay reveal the bungie developer (Mike Zak, environment artist) says that the hunter could have gained his weapons and armor through trade with other players or a kind of gambling (8:12). this is not implemented in the release version. The video was released on july 8, 2013 on youtube. So the decision to cut these features out was made in the last year of a more than 5 year development period which is very uncommon. Perhaps the story is so lame and such a mystery because of all the changes during the last year. Then he talks about the grimoire cards which contain the story. in the forum of destiny.bungie.org a guy called general battuta says that the grimoire story was „mostly written and edited in one crazy spiny very close to launch“. (sept 14, 2014) On feb 13, 2014, he posted a thread in which he shared his excitement of being hired as a writer for bungie in seattle. this was 7 months before release. EDIT3: Reddit user /u/PopeOwned gives a little bit more info about Bungie's Lead Writer, Joe Staten, leaving: http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/2hk88o/spoiler_redditor_provides_insight_as_to_why/ckthwqk EDIT4: Further proof that the story claimed by the reddit poster is TRUE: https://i.imgur.com/Xv02vmU.jpg (Thanks /u/martellus!) EDIT5: I want to note that the demands listed are just things Bungie COULD do to fix all of this turmoil. I am not saying that we deserve anything from them, although it would be in their favor to at least communicate better with us on Destiny's future. EDIT6: More potential proof that the story we're playing now is NOT the one there was a year ago: http://www.penny-arcade.com/news/post/2014/09/10/face-time Read the third paragraph in particular. (Thanks /u/JeanLucPicardAND!)

  • I'm sure this post is from a while ago, but I'm getting back into the mood of playing destiny now. And I'm sure I'm Not the only person that can admit that Bungie is corrupt in a sort of way, but to share my thoughts on what they should do as of now in 2016, Bungie should now, since they're garbage story has been told, they should now release the original story line with a few manipulations so it correlates with the final story we were given in the first place after its completed. That would make sense because this would set the vibe that in the beginning you (guardians) felt you fighting for the right cause and good side, now there is speculation and rumors and conspiracy going around stirring up some things. Now u can go on the quest to find out if the traveler and speaker are who and what they state they are or of its all been a lie and we've been being played and used this whole time. I think that would be pretty killer. Also I would like to visit more places in the destiny universe. Sure some added areas to planets that were cut before or take us out of the solar system to an enemy of the darkness home world, or let us go to some of saturns moons like Europa. There clearly is a back story there, let us go to Pluto, I'm sure the traveler touched Pluto at some point. Bungie could think of something. What I'm trying to say is, this stuff isn't rocket science Bungie could easily make it all happen and it would keep the game alive.

  • The more I play the more disappointed I get. The story is short, and there's not nearly enough content. Let's not forget how bugged this game is, I can only hope they fix things in the near future. Although I have played this game more then any other besides the elder scrolls games. I hear they have a 10 year plan? I sincerely hope they do.

  • I think the only action that would receive answers is the gamers complaining. We are now in a post-Mass Effect world. That is a shiny example that consumers have the power. Games are built around gameplay and story. Destiny's story was god awful. It is was like I went to the movies and watched nothing more than random events that didn't signify anything. To truly understand the story, I'd have to go back home and research it online in broken, out of order segments that still didn't make any sense. The whole play as you play aspect from gaming is doomed for failure. Elder scrolls online, starwars old republic, and what I'm assuming is destiny. The thing that sets the 3 apart is two had a story and content. Destiny's world is lackluster and could be everything that they promised. But that is the key word "promised". They promised a huge game, ground breaking and full of excitement. It's hardly excitement, framing a cave as some have done, or finding excitement in tearing down queen gear to finally upgrade some gear you've been trying to upgrade, only to patch those; yet, still not address the terrible story and lack of content. It's sad to see Bungie fall. Perhaps it was pride or arrogance from their previous award winning series. Maybe it was activision, who knows. I'm afraid that the games is a shell of what it was and the only resemblance to what we were promised remains only as an Easter egg in halo game.

    • This is a great write-up and gives some insight as to why there seems to be so much missing from the game, we as consumers, were drooling over. The fact that I beat the story mode without even realizing it goes to show how lackluster of a "story" it really is. I followed Destiny's development for over a year, dreaming of the day I'd be able to find out what the Traveler is, who all the bad guys are, the story behind Earth being a husk of it's former self, ect and when I can finally play the game I've been yapping about for so long....there is virtually no story at all. Now, I get that Bungie isn't going to release everything and that with a 10 year plan in place, we would have to wait to piece everything together but this is embarrassing. The story is so unremarkable, so bland and uninteresting because there is so little structure around it. People are finishing the story within a day or two and are now stuck between running the same strikes over and over or playing PvP. The chase for better gear will drive players for now but for how long? You're limited to one piece of exotic armor so eventually that grind will become exhausting and lose its fun factor. Destiny has the potential to be a all time great game but the only way that will happen is if Bungie LISTENS to the consumer. Revamp the story, give us a prologue, give us a story that grabs us. Give us cool (and useful) gear for completing the story and beating these huge bosses. Elaborate on the story more, what the hell is going on?! We want this game to be EPIC just as much as you do Bungie, make it happen. We know what you're capable of!

Me and my roommate met playing halo 3 online six years ago. Our friendship really only exists because we related as teenagers over our mutual love for bungie. As a game that distracted us from crappy moments in life, but also as a model for creative direction. The story in halo wasn't top notch by any means, but they made me care because it felt like they cared. I looked to them as a model for how to create a product while keeping your fans first 100 percent of the time. We've both beaten destinys campaign, if you want to call it that, and have since done nothing but make jokes at the games expense when it's brought up. I cant count how many times someone in my house has responded to a question with "i don't even have time to explain why i don't have time to explain." We play the crucible online every few days, but while we play we outright mock destinys lack of variety, its lack of opprotunity to create any sort of memorable moment. How many people out there in the tower are just like me? Waiting to find someone to play with? How can i relish in a clutch victory are well played game if i cant so much as make it clear to my teammates i even exist? And what about the raid? Its more insulting than it really is fun, if even a quarter of the content in the raid was implemented throughout the rest of destiny we would have a much more enjoyable game. Instead the new cool thing in gaming seems to be giving you daily chores to do until eventually you meet the requirements to play the real game. Playing it is fun, but what as an adolescent I thought was an inspiring and creative force (bungie) has revealed itself to me as a laughing stock with a former lucky streak. Im not mad at bungie, i get it. Shit happens. Things are cut. People leave and deadlines are set. But I legitimately have lost all of that awe feeling, not a single company this year has manned up and delivered on this 400 dollar paper weight that i call a game console and its absolutely hilarious that bungie is no exception. An Above average game with tricky marketing, over hyped and incomplete features, insinuations that outright don't exist, obviously gutted storyline, and greed covered up and relabeled as dlc. Its not new, in fact its exactly what I've come to expect from gaming. But the magic is absolutely gone, and whatever person or people caused things to play out the way they did should be ashamed for tarnishing bungies image, quite possibly beyond repair. I used to think bungie was right in wanting to leave microsoft and create things how they see fit. Now i truly feel the whole company would of been much better off just running halo games into the ground forever.

          • Just makes me a little hot to read this stuff, especially since it feels like consumers are being taken advantage of here, and there is a bossy person at the top calling the shots that really doesn't care. It made me feel a little sick in the gut to hear about the Marty thing, and the gaps in the story are making way more sense considering the departure of Staten. It especially gets me hot to hear the developers talk about things in the vidocs and talk about them so proudly and almost smug about it, then see that content was nearly all cut. The quotes about loot is fun to get, we have a living breathing world with something new to do every day, your character is unique and someone will know what experiences you went through to get there. None of this. So flat. I think this just shows that bungie has a real problem here - if they rely solely on one person to ensure a good story is written, they're dead in the water. It's frightening to consider that no one stepped up after Statens departure, but very plausible since the story is as exciting as card board. It is just agonizing to compare the current game vs the original vision back in the 2013 vidocs.. I just want someone to come clean, admit there was a mistake made and say hey we're going to work with our consumers to deliver on this game. Not dodge questions, not talk about other things, to some point stop talking like some all powerful know it alls. It's clear that what is playable today is not representative of the 2013 vidocs version. Admit that and deliver on the original concept.

          • Self-Entitled gamers make me sick. Are you the developer? Are you in control of their budget? Did you invest $500 Million on a product? If you don't like the game don't play it. Bitching and moaning on threads isn't going to change their game plan because in the end they want and need to make a profit. If you were in their shoes maybe you'd understand how it works. Want to rebel against them? Them sell your copy of the game an move on because that is the only thing that you have control over in this situation.

                      • Bungie and Activision should give the two expansions for free. And credit those who already purchased it. It's obvious that their whole marketing scheme has been a fraud. Giving the expansion passes to everyone is a good way to get back into people's good grace especially considering how much money they made on launch. Maybe if they aren't greedy now people will buy the next few Destiny titles. Right now they look like scam artists, and a shame to the whole gaming industry. You would think after the aliens game debacle gaming companies wouldn't outright lie about content. Because worse than being sued is you being blacklisted from your jobs. Just do something to make it right for the community.

                      • Bungie must realize that they will never get another sale from me unless this is fixed. I have already refunded my expansion pass. Pissing off your customers without trying to fix it means your business will go under. With poor business ethics and principals I wouldn't be surprised if they lose tons of money and tons of sales on he near future.

                          • DIY HOME PROJECT: If you fill your destiny case up with cement along with 1 3x5 notecard with activisions logo printed on it, the case becomes a wonderful canoe anchor or frisbee for the dog. That is the most useful thing for this game. No but really, how people still have the nerve to play this game is sickening. You should all just stop playing, and show them you're fed up with being cheated. They know what they did and were letting them get away with it by continuing to play. Stop letting activision walk all over consumers with its second grade programmers and hollow promises, and stop letting other companies pair up with them. It's easy, stop buying their shit until you know it's good for sure rather than finding out firsthand

                            • Bungie, I'm sorry to say it... But you screwed up. And I'm disappointed... I bought into it for a while, I even tried bearing with the stupid grinds... But really? After a game as interesting halo, and a universe explained as a vast open world know as destiny... This destiny you gave us is not ours. I almost don't want to play anymore. And as of 2 weeks ago, I actually haven't played. Because honestly, I'm bored, there's nothing to do. The loot is meaningless, the glimmer that you are supposed to be able to spend on cool stuff you can't, because you have to use stupid crucible and vanguard marks, which defeat the purpose of the currency system. The you may have fixed the engrams, but you haven't done crap to make them, what were your words? Oh yeah "meaningful"... I feel robbed bungie, and honestly, I'm gonna just do what I know, and say I'm done. Until activision lets you have your reins again. I'm done. Sorry bungie, but you're game doesn't look like it's gonna meet its goal at being a 10 year game. I'm anticipating a drop in only 4 months.

                            • Yeah the story is VERY DULL I don't even know what is going on half of the time and the one time we see the queen and her brother idk what there names are and let's face it the end game boss was a joke it was basically the vex gatelord(x3) with different names And the other bosses such as the fallen captins are basically all the same with different skins If the dlc isn't good this game is going down the toilet which is surprising for a game with one of the highest budgets of all time Of this is a bungie game I want a compelling relevant storyline that makes sense and background on what the characters are and also why does every level seem to be Ghost-okay we've got enemies incoming hold off this position...... This is absolute garbage for a level design as it happens several times throughout the story
