How Destiny's content COMPLETELY changed over the last year (TONS of info inside)

The following information was copy-pasted from a Reddit thread. Credit goes to /u/Acer1096xxx for compiling all of this information. And yeah, my formatting kind of sucks.
This thread is a collection of posts and my thoughts that show how Destiny's development changed DRASTICALLY within its last year. It is the reason why the story is lacking, the missions are repetitive, and why there are grimoire cards. A lot of shady stuff went down during the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014. Anyway, let's start off with what the Story was supposed to be like: STORY: This reddit post from a deleted thread http://postimg.org/image/80it9ix8x/ explains how Destiny's story was originally during E3 2013. Bungie.net user Diver2441 sums up all of this here: (Key parts are BOLDED for the lazy) So recently a Reddit thread came to light detailing what Destiny's narrative looked like in 2013, and it's very different from the ailing excuse for a story we're presented with today: the Traveler bringing the darkness, Crow, different progression through planets and even considerable cut areas. So it becomes apparent that between mid to late 2013 and launch, Bungie gutted the story. Now this is where it gets good, something else happened back in late 2013 before the story was gutted; Joe Staten, Bungie's former lead writer left. Some may think it coincidence, but I think not. Now the Reddit thread (which has mysteriously disappeared) outlined a story sprawling across a considerably larger solar system, and including a number of characters and factions who never so much as appear in the full game. The prime example of this is Crow, the character/faction who was set out to expose the Traveler and Speaker for in fact bringing the darkness along with the Traveler, and not the Golden Age. A specific reference to Crow can be found in the above video at 1:01, where a mission would have you assist Crow in looting the Archive on venus for details on the Vex Gatelord (which is in fact a mission we end up doing in the main game, but Crow is clearly not a part of it). The Gatelord was said to contain a way to access a pre-Collapse AI construct who had the ability to expose the Traveler, and we can see this in the form of the inaccessible Bunker RAS2. Even in the PvP, we see a reference to "faction wars" at 1:20 in the video, so it appears that justification and explanation for the different factions in the tower was cut as well. Destiny's current half assed story starts to make a little more sense when we apply the context that the entire narrative was gutted less than a year before launch, and remade without Bungie's lead writer. Why Joe left, and why Bungie felt the need to completely gut the story of the game and cut huge areas is beyond me, but it's abundantly obvious that there's a lot more going on than meets the eye. WHAT THE STORY WAS RE-WRITTEN INTO: Grimoire Cards. I'm currently trying to find the post where I discovered this Check Edit2 for Source, but basically back in February 2014, a man was hired to write all the Grimoire Cards. This was clearly the solution to trying to incorporate as much story as possible with what little story was actually in the game. This also is most likely the reason why there is no Grimoire UI in-game, because it was far too close to release to actually incorporate such a thing. UNUSED LOCATIONS AND FEATURES: Continuing from Diver2441's post, he mentions: If we look at an article from 2013 and the reveal ViDoc ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwOUi4JDC4o ) , it becomes very obvious that the game we have today is vastly different from what it was as little as around a year ago. For starters there are references to areas such as Old Chicago, the ghost fleet in the rings of Saturn, Charlemagne's Vault, and others that very clearly never made it into the full game, despite being fully made and playable around a year ago. Additionally, at 3:24 in the video above, we see an in game location in The Reef, and from 3:43 - 3:51 we see a pine forested area in game that never saw the light of day as well. Even in our own back yard of Old Russia in the retail games, we have locked off areas such as King's Watch, the Jovian Complex, and the Seraphim Vault, none of which are even mentioned in the retail game today. CUT CONTENT BEING RESOLD AS DLC (POSSIBLY): This video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-osssAKgEc ) shows that the majority of the first two expansions of DLC is potentially already on the disc! Even in the beta, areas such as the King's Watch and Seripham Vault were accessible through glitches and yet are not available in the full game (Actually, these places aren't even mentioned in the DLC either!) More proof about these areas can be shown through the data dumps at http://db.destinytracker.com I want to note here that this doesn't mean the content is actually finished, but the idea that it could be is annoying and makes sense given the amount of content that had already been cut. ANOTHER COINCIDENCE: Along with Bungie's Lead Writer departing for unknown reasons, we can't forget about Marty O'Donnell being fired too. We're all aware that the situation had to do with salary, but when Marty left, there was a clear bitterness between him and Bungie. Bungie had changed, and the lead writer had recognized it too. Was it Activision? Probably. But we're not being told the full story and I don't expect us to find out unfortunately. WHAT BUNGIE SHOULD DO: There are a variety of options Bungie can do to fix these problems. GIVE US THE HELD-BACK CONTENT FOR FREE: Unfortunately, this isn't very likely given Activision's greed and contracts already settled in to sell this content later. Some could also argue that it's a good thing this content is being held-back so that the game will stay alive for much longer, although I personally disagree given the lack of content available at launch. GIVE US JUST THE STORY MISSIONS FOR FREE: This is a bit more reasonable and would solve the overall complaint with Destiny. We know there is a story being held back greatly, and we should not let them sell this to us as DLC. GIVE US A SCHEDULE AND COMMUNICATE BETTER: This is my final plea to Bungie. The game is already out; we don't need to be left in the dark anymore. They need to tell us when content is being released and what we can expect so that we can voice our opinions better and prevent them from making more mistakes. THOUGHTS? I know this thread is extremely long in details, but I think it needs to be seen. The Destiny today is not the Destiny we were promised or the one Bungie had even imagined. Locations, ship customization, a real story, and other deleted content were all things planned/created before last year and are all gone now. Something must be done. (I will continue to edit this post as more info comes along). EDIT1: Source to Diver2441's post: http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/70651356/0/0 EDIT2: More details about the Grimoire cards and the fact that all of this "cutting out content" was very recent. Posted by Reddit user /u/mrdabu: ...Moreover, basic game elements were removed - in the developer commentary for the gameplay reveal the bungie developer (Mike Zak, environment artist) says that the hunter could have gained his weapons and armor through trade with other players or a kind of gambling (8:12). this is not implemented in the release version. The video was released on july 8, 2013 on youtube. So the decision to cut these features out was made in the last year of a more than 5 year development period which is very uncommon. Perhaps the story is so lame and such a mystery because of all the changes during the last year. Then he talks about the grimoire cards which contain the story. in the forum of destiny.bungie.org a guy called general battuta says that the grimoire story was „mostly written and edited in one crazy spiny very close to launch“. (sept 14, 2014) On feb 13, 2014, he posted a thread in which he shared his excitement of being hired as a writer for bungie in seattle. this was 7 months before release. EDIT3: Reddit user /u/PopeOwned gives a little bit more info about Bungie's Lead Writer, Joe Staten, leaving: http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/2hk88o/spoiler_redditor_provides_insight_as_to_why/ckthwqk EDIT4: Further proof that the story claimed by the reddit poster is TRUE: https://i.imgur.com/Xv02vmU.jpg (Thanks /u/martellus!) EDIT5: I want to note that the demands listed are just things Bungie COULD do to fix all of this turmoil. I am not saying that we deserve anything from them, although it would be in their favor to at least communicate better with us on Destiny's future. EDIT6: More potential proof that the story we're playing now is NOT the one there was a year ago: http://www.penny-arcade.com/news/post/2014/09/10/face-time Read the third paragraph in particular. (Thanks /u/JeanLucPicardAND!)
link link

  • Not sure if that was already posted, from Reddit:
I can confirm that there were sudden and abrupt changes in the development of Destiny less than a year ago. There was tension between higher ups the entire time we were developing the title due to a lack of cohesion about the vision for the game. One side wanted this huge space epic, like an MMO Mass Effect and the other side was not convinced that would sell and wanted to pare things back to more "easily accessible" standards. They were afraid too much story elements and cut scenes would drive players off. Then Joe left and everything just fell apart. By the time we were 7 months out to release, word came down that we were making massive revisions to the game's story. Huge portions of dialogue were excised and I think several recordings were redone to support the new narrative. Entire areas that would have been in the final game were removed, but some of the context wasn't, which explains weird reactions from NPCs and strange, unexplained motivations. We had a guy come in to write the grimoire cards who was given access to the original script with notations on what was cut and what needed to be revised in order to make this zombie of a game seem plausible. All of the Last City factions had their storylines and dialogue cut, the Guardian's initial introduction to the Tower and the Last City was cut, and ALL the origins were homogenized down to the one originally used for Exo characters. Most of what was cut was planned to be re-polished into DLC, but it's all there on the disc. Not all of it is live on the servers, but it's all there on the disc. Some last minute art assets needed to be remade, which is what you'll be downloading. It's an embarrassing disaster and not the game I thought would be published.
Not sure if legit but it would explain a lot. Link

    • I find all of this detective work to be pointless. Even if all of these "findings" are 100% true, so what? So Bungie is supposed to take the content that they claim will span a 10yr period, and release it all at once for $60? That makes no sense from any perspective. How are devs supposed to continue making games that we can actually enjoy, if they release it for nothing $ wise? At least they did not make it F2P like so many other games that we get these days. I have found some games that I actually love recently, but they were F2P which ruined it for me. In Destiny, you can pay the $60, and then play it through without hitting a pay wall. You can start and fully level each Guardian w/o hitting a pay wall. You can find and obtain ALL weapons and armor in the game w/o hitting a pay wall. Plus, if you went ahead and bought the deluxe edition, then you get all of the above, and that much, or more through the expansions. So, if you spend anywhere between $60 and $100, you have a great game that you can play for a long time. Some gamers have rushed through the content (possibly by standing in front of a cave and shooting hive) (I tried the cave and as soon as I realized that I was gaining a whole level about every 15 minutes, I stopped), but I digress. My point? Try to actually enjoy what we have. Some people actually employ these types of methods (caves) as a way to fully level a character w/o playing the game. I am not hating on it. If that is what you enjoy, then go right ahead. I just do not understand that. I also find it hard to understand how anyone could have already run out of content in this game. Unless (A.) You have sat in front of the TV for 12-16 hours per day playing, or (B.) You stood in front of the cave and leveled all of your characters I see a lot of people saying they are going back to BF4. Is that supposed to be a problem? I mean if that is what you enjoy, then you definitely should go back to it. I hated that game, and will never waste my money again. However, I will also not be on their forums threatening to leave. I would just leave. I think that in the end, people will regret not giving this game time to flesh out. It is very ambitious, and sort of a first for consoles as far as I am concerned. The only other MMO/RPG type game that I have enjoyed on a console is Warframe, and guess what? It is "Free to play". Bet I have spent a couple of hundred here and there in that game. Plus they just keep releasing content for a price. Now, if that is what we were seeing with Destiny, then I definitely would understand the outrage. I think the majority will be more happy by the time we get this new patch. They seem to be on their game by actually being able to release a patch inside of a month. Seems to take much longer in some games, with the Sony/Microsoft process coming into play. This is kind of like the iPhone bendgate thing. Much ado about nothing In the end, these are JMO. I could be terribly wrong, and Bungie may be the Devil

This is what posted on Reddit. I'll say it here, too.
In response to this quote: "GIVE US A SCHEDULE AND COMMUNICATE BETTER: This is my final plea to Bungie. The game is already out; we don't need to be left in the dark anymore. They need to tell us when content is being released and what we can expect so that we can voice our opinions better and prevent them from making more mistakes." I would offer this: 'The Dark Below' is the continuation of the Destiny story. It's being released in December. It will contain content that is being completed and enhanced as I type these words. We'll detail that out soon so you can make your own decisions. As for communication, there are now 5 articles about Destiny updates (http://www.bungie.net/en/News#cat=updates&creationDate=0&page=1) as well as some revealing Dev Notes (http://www.bungie.net/7_Destiny-Dev-Notes/en/News/News?aid=12188) that speak a lot to what we've learned and how we're reacting. That falls outside the other content I'm publishing whenever I can to open a window into our studio. I'm not here to argue with you. I believe that, as the player, your emotional reactions to our games are never wrong. Those magical things that happen in your brain when you play are not things I would ever try to talk you out of. We learn from them. We listen to that because it's valuable to us. What I would say is that Destiny rests on a foundation, and we're building on it. Many people are playing, and we're working to honor that passion and enthusiasm by supporting the experience. There are always things we can do to make the game better, and we're being aggressive about doing them. And, this conversation will continue. Sincerely, I thank you for playing, and for talking about what you want Destiny to be. It's my job to give you a voice in our house, so don't stop talking. I'll be around.
• I think we can all agree that there are certainly SOME game companies out there that strive to squeeze every penny out of their product at great expense to the gamer. And there SOME game companies who take pages from that book, and do a moderate amount of squeezing themselves. I agree with those of you who say "You get what they give you". When you buy a game, you're not buying the game, you're buying a license to use that game in a way that conforms to the license agreement. You own the disc, and you own a license, but you don't own the content on the disc. So what is or isn't there is irrelevant. I also agree with those of you who say "Game companies use DLC to raid our wallets". SOME anyways. I personally miss the days when, if a company developed further content for a game, that content was substantial enough to put on a disc and ship to game stores for purchase. The fact that DLC carries with it little to no publishing costs, and can be done several, even dozens, of times, leaves a lot of opportunity for companies to maximize the profit margin on every little bit of content, but it also leaves a lot of opportunity to maximize on quality. As with most things, there is no perfect solution. But, even if you disagree with the poster, it's important that we keep companies on their toes.

              • Ok. Just going to say it and in caps because it is the only fact about this whole "situation" people are going on and on about that actually matters. Ready? BUNGIE IS ABLE TO DO WHAT THE -blam!- EVER THEY WANT WITH THE CONTENT THEY CREATE. That is all there is to it. It doesn't matter when it was created. It doesn't matter what they decide to sell as DLC later, what they decide to give away as free DLC, or what they decide never to include. That is their decision, and their right as the people who created and developed it. And did you peaple REALLY believe that a game Bungie purposely and deliberately informed us to be a game experience that they intended to build and add on to for ten whole years would NOT have paid DLC, which would include story, over that time? I don't know what happened that people, in particular people in the gaming community, began to believe that they have a right to determine what a developer, a business, can or cannot do with the product they make; or how they are allowed to sell it. When they made the content is absolutely irrelevant. The only thing YOU, the consumer, actually have a right to is whether or not you buy it. If you don't like what they are doing with what they created, don't buy it. But for Pete's sake, stop talking like you have a right to tell Bungie or Activision what they should or should not do with their business and their software. Do you get mad if buy a car but don't get every accessory ever made for it for free? Have you never bought a piece of software that charged extra for additional content? Does it upset you to buy cereal and not get milk for free? And here is a newsflash: things change during the development of a game. Things get added, things get cut for MANY reasons. This happens with EVERY game. EVERY GAME EVER MADE. And Bungie is certainly not the only developer to create content to be sold at a later date as DLC coinciding with the development of the main game. It's friggin' standard practice and there is NOTHING wrong with it. Once more: THEY, BUNGIE, OWN WHAT THEY DEVELOPE. And they have a right to sell it or include it in the way they see fit. You are not ENTITLED to anything. Because, once again, that is what all this is about. People believing they are entitled to what they are not to the point of making a game developer out to be some "corporate villian" for deciding how best to create and sell their own product.

                • everybody wants a handout nowadays. we all got exactly what we paid for. we paid for either a disc or a digital download that granted us access to the game that Bungie decided to make available to us. you don't get more for your $ simply because you saw different content presented during alpha and beta stages of development. even if there is content on-disc that we are not given access to, simply owning the disc does not mean that we own the rights to access all content on that disc. what we buy for $60 is what the makers decide to sell us for $60. what the makers decide to sell us for $60 may not be the full content that is actually contained on the disc we buy or the digital files we download. there is absolutely 0 guarantee made from the seller to the buyer that all content contained within the disc you buy is what your $60 purchase is granting you access to. as a member of the gaming community, you are a consuming member of the gaming industry. if you want more, then invest more $ into the product. pay for dlc. it does not matter when the dlc was developed (pre/post release) or that the dlc content already exists on the disc you've purchased. what matters is that what Bungie has given you is what they decided to sell for $60. what they give you after that $60 purchase is what they've decided is either free additional content, or content that requires additional payment to access. it's called capitalism. Bungie and Activision are not here to slavishly serve the world of gaming geeks. They are here to create games that both entertains the world of gaming geeks and makes their business $. not being happy with the content you paid for is not the same as not actually getting the content you paid for. the initial cost for developing Destiny has been reported as ~$140 million ($500 million invested over the life span of the game). At $60 each, you'd have to sell over 2 million copies before you're breaking even on that initial $140 million and over 8 million copies sold before you're breaking even on the full $500 million invested. if you're developing a game, how much do you "bet" on sales? how much content do you choose to release for the initial cost of $60 to ensure that your product is not only enjoyable for your customers, but also profitable for your business? dlc is a way to augment or "hedge" these types of "bets". it can help buffer your bottom line if total sales are lagging, or it can boost profits if sales are surpassing goals. it's purely business as usual here folks. we're all taking this way too personally. i'd love to see any of the people here upset about this attempt to develop a game on the same scope/scale/level as Destiny but give more content at a cheaper overall cost to consumers and accept the fact that from the perspective of running a business, they left money on the table.

                  • I hope you realize that this is all part of the production of a major video game. ALL games WILL have cut content, it's part of the development proccess. It's not really much to worry about, I'm totaly satisfied with the game as it is and I'm glad they cut content, because that leaves room for better content

                    • DLC, all of the story will be delivered through DLC. Characters will be added. The level cap increased. And more areas and planets in DLC. Bungie has stated several times that the game isn't over. They have also plainly stated that the DLC will fill in holes in the story. Meaning you have to check of all of these "Chapters" before you can get the whole story. It's going to be a 10 year game. Just give it more than a month and stop crying because you can't use context clues. PS. Not intended for the OP necessarily. I'm just tired of seeing so many people reaching for something that has already been explained dozens of times.

I have ZERO problem with content already developed behind the scenes being edited out for future release. Any other $60 game would charge you for extra DLC, and none of those games are planned 5+ year ventures. QQ, btches... QQ...

                            • Oh wow a project changed over time and things were cut, how shocking... If the story changed over time there is a reason for it, Bungie didn't look at it and go wow this is too good, we need to dumb it down. All you are going off of is hearsay from people that play tested it and some clips of the game, all of this stuff was removed for a reason. We may never know what that reason was, but it isn't there because Bungie wasn't happy with it.

                              • Or maybe, they decided as this game franchise has a 10 year plan, that they hold back on certain bits as to not rush the whole experience... Just playing devils advocate, but everyone is so very cynical...

                                • Hate to tell you, content changes a lot over development period. Even with this 'inside source' you have no idea what's going on in-house for BUNGiE. This is pure speculation and hype. But by all means, let's keep stirring the pot of resentment these forums seem to be exuding.

The kind of sad nutjob who goes looking for everything they've said in the last x years and holding them to ransom over it. #selfentitledgamers #prioritiesyeah

                                    • I am actually happy most of that original story has been rewritten and cut out. Nothing is more boring, then having everything chewed out and handed over to you right from the beginning story wise. It makes it extremely boring if you know everything right from the beginning. Then there is no suspense and sense of discovery left anymore. Exactly like that writer in that topic of the first screenshot says. It would have been just another Halo game, where you play a story campain and pretty much know everything up front and what's going to happen. /shrug

                                      • So Bungie changed their mind - they are entitled to do that you know... it is their game. It's also entirely possible that as the story develops more will be revealed. They might not have gone completely away from their original idea, just decided to play it differently to build it up. Either way, at the end of the day, it's a computer game. Who lets their knickers get in a twist over a computer game? #firstworldproblems #getagrip

                                          • I'm a Bungie fanboy, I'm a Destiny Defender... I still like (not LOVE) what we got, and I'm still going to buy the DLC. That all being said... this is a pile of -blam!-ing bullshit horseshit crap. The fact that every answer to this narrative's questions lay just on the other side of a pay gate, the fact that so much got held back from what should have been the "vanilla" game... this shit sucks, bad. Pretty sure this all comes down to Activision, none of this fits in with Bungie's actual MO in the slightest... so I pray Bungie leverages their influence to fix this as best they can, and soon. Free missions, some story... something. I get the 10 year life cycle shit, but this is like... dealing out a crackhead's hit breath by breath... too thin, too useless.
