The handy guide to fun looting and leveling
Lucky you. I'm trying to play this game right instead of cheesin some cave. I've put in over 30 hours and haven't seen one legendary drop. I'm level 23 and I keep getting lvl 15-18 gear. This games loot system is one of the worst I ever seen.
This is the kind of posts I'm seeing a lot, and if you feel this way I have a couple of things to say to you. The grind is real, and I think you May be looking at it the wrong way, first off playing the story even on hard mode will only get you to about level 18, with out a solid fireteam strikes are tedious and half the time randoms quit midway through. As far as farming goes it's a core mechanic past level 18 but by no means should you ever rely on the RNG past level 18. Unless you're doing strikes at least 2 lvls above your current level you're going to get shite in return. Your Tuesday plan should always include maxing vanguard marks and crucible marks to maximize your gear. If you're not big on PvP then crucible gear is a secondary goal. Still get the marks because the gear from DO FWC and NM still work fine in pve. Obviously do your daily bounties and get vanguard and one of the three factions to rank two (Minimum rank to buy armor) pick a helmet you like and focus on that purchase (120 marks) so far (for me anyway) legendary boots and helmets are the rarest drops. Buy boots (boots arms and chest all run 65 marks) then focus on your second piece (also keep in mind all rare sets should leave you hovering at lvl 24.5ish) your secondary goal each week is to do the weekly strike for strange coins. Xur is a fickle bastard but has good exotics most of the time. Usually one per class. Also bank your motes if you're looking for that exotic chest. Once you hit 24 and between the Mark/rep grind you're going to be forced to farm. But it's not about that loot farm from a cave. Engram farming is a necessary evil, but don't worry yourself with that til level 28 or so. Each planet has a tried and proven loot loop. The Devils lair spawn zone on earth, the starting zone on the moon, ishtar commons on Venus and I believe the sunken city entrance on mars. Learn these loops, love these loops they are your bread and butter to level 30. But it's not all some boring stand and wait game. Its a steady supply of glimmer, (make sure you always eat your consumables for glimmer gain in high traffic areas) it's decent loot (mostly greens which I'll get into later) and these areas also have patrol beacons for rep gain. A full armor set is going to set you back roughly 60 ascendant material and 200 "planetary material" something that would take forever hoping to come across it during normal play. But you also need xp on your weapons, subclass and armor. So these areas provide that. So the first step is to determine your required material. For example my titan set requires helium and my weapons spirit blume. So ascendant material aside I'm going to start with the moon. Hopefully the vendor has some moon bounties(collect or patrol) or a fallen leader bounty. Also with the moon zone it has two world event spawns in the loop and a third just down the way. You're going to run up the hill and to the left of the building the first mission is in check the platform then the building for helium coils and chests (the building has to side rooms chests will spawn in and 4 middle room locations chests or helium will spawn in) the out the door check the two smaller buildings the cave on the left as you exit and then head Into the middle go through each cave and building till you come to the final marker for patrol missions in this area check behind all the rocks and such and always check both sides of the bridge. A scoped weapon will let you see all the way to the start. Enemies will spawn constantly in this loop giving you a steady supply of kills/xp/glimmer. Elite mobs almost always spawn in the building from the first mission. There are 3 or 4 patrol beacons here and plenty of random coil spawns. Its best to do this early on if possible. Also don't spend mats on rep ever unless you are within 25 points of the next rank. 50 mats only convert to 25 rep. Also when you're a high enough level or have 2 high enough level friend's to complete nightfall do it every Tuesday to increase rep gain. Vanguard and a faction are always more important than crucible. All three factions take crucible marks as payment and vanguard has your higher level speeders. Now the cryptarch is a dick. The higher level you are with him supposedly the better chance you have of better decrypts. Also every level you gain earns you a cryptarch gift pack. Usually has high level currency or engrams in it. Past a certain level with him greens will always auto decrypt on pick up. Not sure if this ever applies to blues but it might? Engrams also decrypt at your current level regardless of the level you found them. So save them for a couple levels if need be. The RNG is so slanted it's retarded. Don't pray for good gear just buy it. So far I've found probably a dozen legendary Engrams and been given via reward a half dozen more. 3 have turned into legendary weapons and on a warlock glove set. The rest have all decrypted to blues. Another important tip I've found a lot of people are unaware of is that blue Engrams or better if missed on patrol in a mission or strike will be found in your mail box when you return to the tower. Don't risk a wipe for fear of losing them. Past level 15 all greens picked up should be broken down asap. This gives you room for more loot and also the mats you need to upgrade your better gear. Ideally you'll end up with three gear sets per character PvE PvP and raid. raid seems like it can replace your PvE set so you may end up with just two. Focus on a single set at a time as PvP sets are useless for the most part outside iron banner PvE should be the first goal. Happy hunting guardians
