Someone has to say it. Does Bungie not realize that randomly finding people online isn't very different from simply using matchmaking? If your friends aren't on, you just search for people so you can play. With the current communication options (or lack thereof), it's simply mind boggling you can't use standard conventions to get a game going.
This is one of those things where a company is being stubborn and it will eventually get fixed. It's just a matter of how long they wait. Online gaming is hardly new, this is such a giant step backwards in terms of structure.

This isn't a one or the other issue. It's a "add other ways to play" issue. A "social shooter " MUST include mechanics within the game to make it SOCIAL. Hell, "VGA Planets" had a better system of getting people together to play ... Look at WoW ... dungeon queues, across servers no less, in order to make playing the dungeon easier. Does anyone expect to get the best experience that way? No. But, it lets people play and PRACTICE without having to invest inordinate amounts of time. This is a video game, not a Thesis Project. I like Destiny but there are some things that need to be reconsidered and tweaked.
