I feel like improvements could be be made to the tower to make it easier to get into a story, patrol or strike with other people, as when none of my friends are online I end up playing missions through by myself quite often. For example, from the roster page of the start screen in the tower you should be able to set up your next mission, so that anyone else wanting to do the same mission can join you.
