So much Epicness with no Epic story to tie it all together

Destiny has so much going for it. It's gorgeous. The combat mechanics are great. It has a little bit of everything for different tastes. The problem, imo, is there lacks a strong narrative to tie everything together. To give us a sense of who/what/why. There's really no purpose to it all, which is such a waste considering Destiny has the tools, unlike every other generic FPS out there, to be something special.

  • I agree with this entirely.Gameplay wise, all my hopes and dreams have been fulfilled. It's almost perfect. However the story left me extremely disappointed. There was almost barely a story at all. All it is is Ok space pirates on russia shoot em and oh look now theres space zombies on the moon i guess ok kill those oh look now theres space ROBOTS better go shoot those too now lets go see the awoken who apparently nobody knows anything about even though im playing as one and there are plenty of em at the tower ok so apparently theres this big manufacturing site of the space robots that everybody knows about but didnt feel like doing anything about??whatever lets go shoot a big robot and rip its head off k we did that that was easy now lets go shoot space fat people until we get to the space robot building place and blow it up hey we did it cool but wait how does blowing up the space robots stop the darkness? That was only one enemy, there are three more. What was the point of the Cabal? What even is the Darkness?Like, if thats really all it took to heal the traveller, why did we wait centuries to do it? Ugh Ok im done ranting now I mean dont get me wrong i LOVE this game.. But Im a little salty about the story.

    • From what I've heard, this is just the exposition, and bungie is planning on expanding the story for years, I do believe. Also, as an introduction to the world, it's very intriguing.

      • I agree. Based on stuff in game and the grimoire, there's an amazing mythology and lore in the Destiny universe. If you look, you can tell that there is a richness to it, it's just a shame that we never get to experience or discover that richness.

        • Whoever wrote it should be ashamed, and I really hope they retire so as to not make such a travesty in another game. They are certainly not deserving of whatever pay cheque they received but with a little luck is was a big enough pay day to spend the next decade with their feed up in the Bahamas. If they really must write I'm sure sci fi channel need some F grade writers for the next sharknado movie...

        • So true. I wasn't excepting destiny to have a story on the same level as Mass Effect. I figured it'd be about as good as Halo. But I wasn't expecting there to be no story at all....I mean there was about 4 cut scenes I think? And we never got to be a hero and save the traveler or anything either. Disappointed.

Agree. Though if recent threads are to be believed...it DID HAVE an epic story. It just met the axe < 12 months ago. I think the question is WHY!? At this point, there are so many scatterbrained subplots I really don't know how DLC can sort through the mess. EDIT 1: And to those who argue that "Destiny is a 10 yr plan, give it time, etc." I think its pretty common knowledge that if you're planning a story with any type of longevity, each "episode" needs to have its own story arc / resolution regardless of the main plot. Examples: Star Wars IV: Death star destroyed. Harry Potter 1: Sorcerer's stone saved. Etc, etc. With Destiny? We have no idea what the point was...

              • To add to your thought, a lot of the non-boss missions are go to point A, whip out ghost, have waves of enemies, then go to point B. I don't like that :(

                • this game could have been tremendous...instead it's just blah....i keep thinking about the original vision of destiny and all that could have been. that game could have become legend....instead we get this watered down version that while playing when my GF says "honey i need you to help with blah blah blah" i have not problem dropping the controler. i was really looking for a reason to break up with her and the original vision of destiny was the basket i put all those eggs into. don't get me wrong for some reason i don't understand i keep playing it over and over agian at the same time thinking "wow this is really boring" or "what is the story/reason behind this particular event i'm doing". remember grape drink and grape juice look the same and sometimes taste the same but they are not the same formula. right now destiny is grape drink and the original vision is the grape juice i salavate for.

                    • I really expect sonething like Mass Effect, but really there isn't a story. Nothing leggendary, how bungie says. A lot of good ideas, but no cutscene that tell you whats going on. And a complete different story in every planet...bungie do somenthing, please!!!!

                      • That's because they just introduced the main players. Think about it, the opening credits are still rolling. We haven't even gotten to the meat of the story yet.

                        • I still really like Destiny but it's definitely lacking in the narrative department. I've got a level 24 Warlock and I've not been to Mars yet, I see no point unless a bounty leads me there because the story is so shallow.

                        • I agree. Especially putting the grimore cards in. Nobody wants to go on the Internet to read those and nobody does. Why can't the lore just be included in the game >_<

                            • It definitely left a lot of unanswered questions, but I don't mind waiting for the answer. I like a universe full of mystery as long as it doesn't end up like Lost with a lot left unanswered. If they elaborate on the lore in the dlc expansions and future installments, I'm fine with how this served as the setup. As a standalone story, it was pretty weak, but I'm trying to look at it as a small part of a much larger whole that hasn't been released yet.
