Why is Proximity Chat not yet confirmed or denied?

In this thread regarding proximity chat, DeeJ said that he would pass along the feedback to the people who should see it. Now, the game has gone gold. So why do we still not know if they implemented it? Unless it is being crammed in there with a Day 1 patch, the people at Bungie would know if it is in there. Why not just tell us? Stop saying that beards were the #1 most requested thing from the beta. Voice chat was. Address it.

    • The Johnbonne of old would respond with "it should be such an obvious thing to put in that Bungie wouldn't need to confirm if it was there", but I can't help but take that somewhat seriously. I don't understand why the option, the ability to toggle the different kinds of chat on and off is so taboo especially when I'm seeing people say Destiny is such a social experience. I'd like very much to use the Tower as a place to find like-minded folk for at least group play, rather than guessing that R3 inspects a character and they get an anonymous poke. I'd also like to view other players as meaningful rather than just being there for the sake of Bungie trying to impress us with their persistent world tech; I'd like to interact with these people rather than attempt to sign to them that I'd like to request their help. I know people will say that there's abuse and spam, but this happens with any game that has voice communication (perhaps with the exception of Mario Kart 8 with its censorship), but for those who can tolerate it should have the option to keep it on. Muting players should be allowed as well, and thanks to the reputation system of the Xbox (I hope it works, anyway), they won't go unpunished for foul behaviour. If your experience is going to be soured then keep your options to fireteams that you know and trust. Just as those who want to throw back and fourth a bit of banter without group size limitations can do so. Not sure about you lot, but I don't want to feel like I'm in occupied Paris where I can look at other people but fear talking to them - I'd like to see for myself whether I'll get shot for opening my mouth first.

      • Destiny is all finished down and packed and is already being shipped to well...everywhere. I don't expect anymore news about the game due to the fact there is only 4 days left until its released.

        • Hypothetically, if I have a friends list with no one interested in playing Destiny then I can't play and talk with anyone, or I have to accept friend invites from strangers without vetting them first, if I can talk to someone in game I can at least vet them before adding them to my friends list. Am I right or wrong in saying this? This game will fail if you can only be social with the people you know. Bungie defines social as segregation. How can you have total control over social engagement when you have no control?

          • For all those complaining about voice communication... Learn to use the mute button! Stop trying to ruin the functionality of the game because you're too stupid or lazy to use the mute button. We NEED voice comm in this game, without it there is literally no productive way to get to know people and make enough friends and be able to decipher if they are interested in the same aspects of the game that you are. A good example here, is raiding. Forcing us to have to add every random person we play with.. to then send a typed messaged if they even accept.. or then to attempt to make a fire-team, followed by enabling voice comm within the fire team, to FINALLY be able to determine if they are looking to do what we are, is the most stupid, undeveloped, primitive, most anti-social way to be able to meet people in Destiny.

            • Honestly game chat in most games is dead. Everyone just goes into parties so they don't have to deal with yelling kids, barking dogs, and trolling. I don't think it's a big deal to not have a proximity chat. Parties ruined game chat.

The only #feedback post to get a reply from any Bungie rep. was " Destiny's biggest problem: it's a social game with no communication " posted by John of Mars. It still gets comments. Deej commented on it. The #feedback was full of these posts the day of the beta. Deej did say he would pass it on. We all read the weekly update. The 45min to unlock the raid? Poor communication? If it was a joke, poor taste. If it was true, WTF? I can only hope they added, or will add something. Proxy, text, more emotes ( better be a boat load of emotes ) The day of launch, maybe the next day. If the comm. is the same as in the beta. I expect these forums will be all about the comm. There are players who have not played the beta. They have not been in the forums. They will be.

They've got one more weekly update. They may be saving such a widely wanted feature for the last update.

                • From what i can find their going to leave it as is for now. So you'll probably have to use party chat throughout the game. All i want is chat in crucible or make it all free for all. Chat encourages team work not just trash talking.

                • Destiny has already been discovered by thousands of people who enjoyed the first part of the beta on PS4 and PS3. Today, the beta will resume on all four major console platforms. Players who haven't gotten a chance to play Destiny yet will notice you can only talk to those you have joined a Fireteam with. David Dague, who is a community manager at Bungie, talked about why Destiny players can only talk to people in their fire team when competing at The Crucible. "We want to make sure your level of social engagement in Destiny is something that you have complete and total control over. We want you to make very deliberate decisions about the people you're going to have on your team, and the voices that you welcome into your audio mix. "We've made a lot of games over the years that have brought a lot of gamers together in social and violent [encounters]. We found that people who know each other and trust each other tend to make the best contributions to the party. I can certainly remember playing Bungie games online and other people would use their access of being able to talk to me as an opportunity to incite grief or bully me, [so that's why we did that]," Dague said. This is a nice move by Bungie because not everyone wants to hear a screaming 11 year-old while they're playing with their friends. Some other games could take a cue from Destiny in this regard. The Destiny beta opens back up today and this time it's for all four major consoles platforms. Bungie will close the beta this coming Sunday and then that will be it until the Sept. 9. Some betas have been extended over the day they originally planned to end it, but it would be a surprise to see Destiny do this. Stick around as we'll have all the major details on the game leading up to, at and post launch.

                    • I feel like a simple solution is proximity chat that can be switched on and off easily? Especially in the Tower... Or maybe a simple 'request to chat' icon that appears discreetly when approaching a player coupled with a 'do not disturb' mode.

                    • I highly doubt it's going in. Its a MASSIVE pain in the ass to program, and considering it wasn't in the beta, I doubt it'll be in the full game.

As much as I am DYING for a prox chat or instant voice communication in fireteams, my bet is they are not implementing it. Especially because they haven't announced whether it will be implemented or not. And here is why. I know that a lot of players didn't buy Titanfall because of the simple fact that they didn't have private lobbies (myself included). So Destiny knows they would probably get a lot of hate if they announced they didn't implement prox chat. They would also probably lose a lot of potential buyers. So they are better off letting people guess, and then finding out AFTER purchasing. If they did implement prox chat, they probably would have announced it. However, as a side note, they could also loose potential buyers who DON'T want prox chat, so there fore would not announce Prox chat even if it is in fact being implement. The chance of that is much less likely though. And for these reasons, we can't make any absolute assumptions, though the odds are not in our favor. You also now know why they haven't told us wether prox chat will be implemented or not.

                            • For the most part, proximity chat was not needed with the local xbox chat option. I always quickly sent invites to those who appeared in my feed field and never had issues. Second, proximity chat opens you up to a lot of good things, but also a lot of trolling. I respect Bungie for respecting that back in H2, there was video after video who used proximity chat to hurt the overall experience. As I said over ten years ago, "If you think abusing a game mechanic is going to slide the first time, good for you. But don't complain when it isn't implemented in another game in the future because of you abusing it." All halo games which used it had abuse. All of them. This game is about the experience of the user and opening up any doors of communication for abuse is counter productive to that end. It stinks and I hope it does get implemented in the future, but there's a reason why the age old saying remains true: It only takes the few to ruin a good thing for all.
