Proper arguing takes place between ideas/frameworks. Most of what people now call 'arguing' would have, until quite recently, been referred to as 'fighting.' This can still be seen in the fact that "you're stupid" and "just because" are not, yet, considered arguments. That being said, the purpose of argument is to discover truth by pitting competing theories against one another.

Most of these "arguments" are backed up with actual facts, and contrary to your opinion I feel I can change others stances on these topics.

To come to a mutual agreement and/or gain new perspectives on an issue. Obviously this requires both participants to be open-minded. And some opinions are more valid than others.
