Raids: What you need to know

What a raid IS - Very difficult - demands strong teamwork and communication - an investment - extremely time consuming - requires extreme attention and focus - sometimes can be less fun than work What a raid IS NOT - Short - Easy to clear - soloable - carryable (meaning a couple good players can't carry a whole team through) - Something to decide to do on a whim - relaxing What Matchmaking encourages: - Lone wolf mindset - individual focus on individual gain - carrying - Leaving out of frustration or boredom Why Raids should not be matchmade: 10% of the time, maybe, you'll be able to clear a raid without advanced planning. Raids demand thought, planning, strategies, roles to play, extreme focus, and a LOT of time. Raids are not something you decide to do on a saturday because you have nothing else to do. Raids are something that you plan with other people in advance, planning out a strategy, assigning roles, and making sure everyone can communicate clearly. What matchmade raids eventually leads to: Matchmade players complaining about the difficulty of the raid because they tried X number of times and never cleared it. By the nature of matchmaking, there will be far more matchmade raids than there are normal, planned raids. Bungie sees this as the majority of their audience. Bungie decides to nerf raids to satisfy the majority. Raids stop being challenging for who they were designed for, and eliminate the most challenging, hardcore component of the game. Destiny loses replay value, more players will stop playing after the level cap because Raids do not challenge them anymore. If you want Raid matchmaking, that means that you want to play a raid without planning, without a strategy, without knowing who you're playing with beforehand, and out for personal gain. If this is you, you are not raid material. You do not belong in raids, you should not be allowed to raid. Raids are high-level endgame content designed for the players looking for an extreme challenge, not of individual skill, but of teamwork. If K/D is the most important thing to you, you are not raid material. If you're just looking for a few laughs and a good time, you are not raid material. If you think you can carry your team through a raid, you are not raid material. If you're a team player and focused, you ARE raid material. If you're serious about clearing the raid and have hours to spend, you ARE raid material. If you can play a role and stick to what you need to do, you ARE raid material. If you are a casual gamer, raids were not designed for you. That's a simple truth. Stop assuming everything in the game was designed just for you. "There's something in Destiny for everyone" IS NOT "everything in Destiny is accessible to everyone" What people are complaining about would be like if you complained that Recon wasn't immediately available to everyone in Halo 3 (which many of you actually did). Recon was something to be proud of having, and not just anyone could get it. The same thing applies here. Raids are not things that anyone can complete: they're reserved for those with the perseverance to conquer them. They require a lot of effort, which translates in to why they require you to form a team on your own before going in to one. If you can't be bothered to seek out other players looking to do a raid properly, then by all rights, raids demand more effort than you're willing to put in.

      • +1, been saying this for weeks. The thing is console gamers haven't been exposed to raids that pc gamers are used to; which is to a degree what Destiny raids are based around. They don't understand the level of commitment raiding requires, granted Destiny raiding pales in comparison to most MMO raids in terms of difficulty, strategy, and dedication.

      • Jus one thing.. 10% chance to clear a raid on a random party? Edit that in 0%. Don't give false hope to have a fair shot at it. It's downright impossible to be faced with raid's puzzles and figure them out and beat them that easily

        • If the VoG was as difficult as you describe raids as supposedly being, and there werent hundreds of resources online providing raid tips/strategies, or if the raid was different for every run or if everyone was doing the raid for the first time, your point might be valid. However, I disagree because adding optional matchmaking gives players like myself who have completed the raid a few times to jump on and do a raid with other likeminded players within an hour, while not infringing upon those with set raid groups or folks who want to pick and choose their fireteams. There may be more players AFK and more of a challenge for new raids and first time raiders but this is not a good argument not to have optional matchmaking for raids. The matchmaking if done correctly just adds a convenience factor by computerizing what some of us do now which is search for randoms to finish a raid with. Some groups are good, others are not so much but why waste 15-30 mins (or more) trying to find a group when U can have a system to do it for you?

A raid's difficulty level is not supposed to be higher due to it being full of glitches...I agree with optional matchmaking for raids though.

        • We need MM as an option. DO not use it if you do not want too. And nothing needs to change just because one would choose to use MM. Same Raid, same gear and weapon drops. Period.

          • this is my controller. There are many like it but this one is mine. My controller is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I master my life. My controller, without me is useless. Without my controller, I am useless. I must aim my controller true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to k/o me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. My controller and I know what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our bursts, not the smoke we make. We know it is the hits that count. We will hit. my controller is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I well learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its parts, its accessories, its buttons, and its joysticks. I will keep my controller clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of eachother. We will. Before the devs I swear this creed. My controller and I are the defenders of my game. We are the saviors of my life. *ie: dude, you're taking this way too seriously~0_o~*

            • I'm no to matchmaking... But, they need some way of joining teams for raids in the tower, you can hand pick who you accept etc like you would on forums, checking stats, that they have a mic etc. If not the tower will turn into spam Central with players bombarding you with. "Message to all recent players, looking for raid team."

You're an idiot. Not to mention pompous. Where do you think all those bad players are going to go if they don't have matchmaking and people willing to deal with them . Is an elitist prick like you who's way far ahead of them going to help them to do the raids in your clan are you even going to let them in your clan? I'm talking about new people new to the raids. Let's say after two more raids come out and you don't want to do that raid anymore. I succeeded in much end game material via communication and working with people even when they suck. You teach them they learn to get better. Be prepared to fail in raids. Someone like me who is a good player and still believes in matchmaking is willing to take the time out to communicate with a bunch of randoms. You don't want that your an elitist; you don't want them even in your game, cause it's yours right? Matchmaking doesn't get things on nerfed people complaining gets things nerfed. And people are going to complain because they won't have people to help them. Clans will fill up and the next day, once people are not at the same point anymore that clan will be empty. Then you have to find a new one and do it all over again over and over.

                    • Here's my problem with no mm. I will not have enough people to make a six man team on my schedule. I'm in a clan but our time zones are too close for me. I work 72 hrs a week and can only clear time for a raid at 1am til 5 am on Sunday night Monday morning. So I don't get to enjoy an aspect of the game because I have a family to support. That's bs, I paid for the whole game not part. Mm or solo or party shouldn't matter. Just let me play.

Wow, your ego is so freaking huge that you actually came up with half-truths to support your fellow condescending video game elitists on a game that many gamers will stop playing once they get endgame. Matchmaking in raids didn't hurt any major mmorpg nor did it hurt or stop any of the elites static groups or any other hardcore groups because it gave them options if a player had to leave in a middle of a raid and they need to replace him to help finish it or for inspection in which gives you a chance to get the right class with the right gear to balance your team out for that boss fight. Heck some matchmaking tools will help you find how many times a player cleared a raid. Bungie may have their own version of a raid but Destiny Beta lacks some key communication features in the game to really support it.
