So one problem I had playing the beta was that I wanted to be able to save the stronger melee attacks (like the warlock's energy drain) for stronger targets, but these attacks were limited to the first enemy you hit when fully charged. Or when playing as a hunter, if you missed with a knife attack, you would throw the throwing knife, and be forced to wait for it to recharge.
I was hoping they you could tweak it so that holding the melee button would activate the enhanced melee, so we could save it for when we need it most.
EDIT: I was thinking a short hold, so if the button is held for a quarter second or whatever, the strong melee would be used, where if it is tapped, the normal melee would be used.
EDIT2: Most people here seem to be hunters complaining about the throwing knife being wasted, but this can also be used effectively for other classes too. Say there's a captain nearby, but a dreg pops up in your face. You melee the dreg on impulse, but now ou can't use your energy drain or the oblivion punch on the captain until it recharges.

It does need work, the only reason I hated the hunter was he'd throw the knife when i thought i was in Lunging distance of my target.

If you maxed your Strength out during the Beta you were able to get 3 charged melee hits out per minute couple that with say a weapon or armor piece that had the ability to generate melee energy with hits and you were set. That said I wouldn't mind the idea of holding the button activated the charged melee attack

I approve of this thread. As a Hunter I've wasted many knives, but when you need a knife you usually need immediately, so a wait time, even a small one might feel a little off. A good idea none the less. Maybe a double tap would be better than holding the button. It's worth noting that if you have your Guardian set up with certain skills and armour you get more knives to throw and the cool down is only 20 seconds, so a wasted melee wouldn't hurt that much.

Perfectly said, it doesn't matter to my brother because he's a titan and doesn't care who gets the oblivion punch, just as long as he can punch things. Me, I would love this to be implemented because I'm a hunter and I don't want to waste my throwing knife if I accidentally miss the target be 3 inces.

Building off of the suggestions in here they could implement an option for the regular default melee mechanic, a hold for the ability, and a double tap. Similar to the way hold to crouch/ toggle crouch was built into the Halo series.

Adding a hold or double tap would be quite cumbersome and very hard to use effectively, since a lot of the times its used impulsively. Also, most of the other melee commands in other games are just the single tap, so by default you'd only press once quickly and expect your melee to do its thing. However, not being able to choose when to use the powers is a problem, maybe add a toggle in settings to 'always use when available' or have an option where u can hold another button at the same time for the power.

Throwing knives are meant to be hard to use. You will miss a lot if you don't practice. My only problem is when I go to lunge at the enemy and wind up throwing the knife and missing. So I agree with holding the button.

Meh, i'm not too bothered about this. If you put enough points into strength then your melee special only has a 20 second cooldown. Thats with 100% cooldown anyway.

Make melee R3 and throwing knife r1. I don't think r3 is utilized (at least in the beta).

Lol. I never had problems with my throwing knife especially not in the PvP. I got some pretty nice kills using the knife and saved myself using the knife. But I can see your point as I did waste mine A LOT of the times.

I agree ,bungie could just ad a charged melee attack and a regular melee attack, different button or the same button but with hold

I think this is a great idea but the implementation needs work. Seems to me that if you have to hold the stick down to throw the knife it's going to kill your aim.

Warlocks energy drain is useful all the time as it reduces the cooldown of grenades dude. I use it everytime its up without fail. Love me them grenades. .

well c hunters are rewarded for being accurate, thats their whole thing, so its obvious that u get punished for not being accurate. Before you start to tell me off, I too played as a hunter, I played all three classes as a matter of fact. And to the melee suggestion, I think its fine the way it is, its meant for two things, 1. a show of force, power, and/or accuracy. 2. its a measure of last resort in a tight space or encounter if you don't have your supper. In any case your armor also has modifiers for this and other things.

Interesting idea, I never really found a problem with it due to being a warlock so I didnt really care to much about saving it but. But I can see why with the titan and the hunter.

I want them to make it to where if you hit a guy in the back you execute them but that probably won't happen.

Only thing I hate about the melee, is that annoying flash when using the Hunter. It hurts my eyes. Its -blam!-ing annoying that I stopped meleeing
