Short Story: "Not Enough"

It's not enough... That thought echoed in his mind, echoed until it seemed his whole existence could be defined by that one idea; it simply was not enough. Forged to fight an ancient war, crafted with Golden Age technology so complex that even he couldn't understand it, designed for one purpose and one only... to defend Humanity. His kind had been reactivated, their memory wiped, in order to fulfill that very purpose. But he was so much more. Perhaps Humans didn't intend to give their creations sentience, but then, they had never fully understood the Traveler or its capabilities. Nonetheless, he and his kind were gifted with the same sense of self that burdened their creators with the question, “Why am I here?”. For him, that question was already answered. And yet... And yet what separated him from the ones who had fashioned him? The essence of what made him himself, what gave him a sense of “I”, was that so different from the 'soul' which some of his makers insisted they possessed? He was just as capable of pondering the questions which occupied their minds late into the night; questions of purpose, of meaning... of destiny. But none of that mattered now. Standing amid a crush of vehicles just outside of the walls of the Cosmodrome, the only thought which occupied his unfathomably advanced processing cores was, It's not enough. The Darkness, the antithesis of the existence which had for centuries uplifted humanity, had levied the entire crushing weight of its abysmal intentions on their vast empire, sending them scurrying like rabbits back to their hole, hiding underneath the Traveler's skirts. And they were still being pushed back. Some had tried to flee, escape the impending doom which was closing about their neck; they met their destiny on the edge of the Deep Black. Those who had returned were no longer 'human'. The survivors of that fated trip took refuge in the Reef, but some brave few of those who had first turned tail and run came back to earth, came back for one last gasp of effort against the falling Night.... He was jolted back to reality as an Awoken next to him took a round to the chest and collapsed without a sound. To his right, a Human jerked and twisted as his arm exploded in a spray of blood, showering everyone nearby with the color of failure. That same failure dripped down the cold metal face staring out at the enemy. He couldn't feel the warmth of the blood, but somewhere inside, he could feel Despair. He thought he knew his purpose, but could such a thing retain its meaning in the face of such overwhelming helplessness? His existence was meaningless, his purpose unfillable, and yet mechanically, doggedly, he fought on, laying waste to every enemy in sight, buying precious second after second for those behind him to escape. And still, it wasn't enough. Humanity was doomed to Fall as they had Risen; swiftly and completely. He was struck in the leg. His gyroscopic sensors immediately compensated for the sudden inertia and fed his artificial muscles the proper signals to keep him upright, keep him useful, and then another round struck his steel skull. Warning systems blared in his conciousness, telling him to stop, to hide, to retreat, but he refused to listen. Reeling from the impact, he took cover behind a vehicle, the engine steaming, the occupants dead. If machines felt rage, he had long passed that point, fueled not by injustice or hatred, but by his own uselessness. That rage kept him firing again and again, as his steel body was slowly chipped away, his senses dulled, his movements slowed; and finally, he saw the regal robes and headdress of a Hive Wizard appear above him, both clawed hands raised and glowing with a sickly light. The Russian wind failed to chill him, whose mechanical body could withstand temperature far above and below that of his creators, but this creature hovering above his broken body made him shiver. One hand lifted, the glow intensified, a look of hatred twisting its already grotesque features; he lifted his own almost lifeless hand to ward off the impending blow. Pain and darkness overcame him, and his last thought as the light in his eyes dimmed was, It wasn't enough... The Cosmodrome, Centuries Later: The harsh wind kicked up dust around three Fallen scouts picking their way through the ruins of rusted vehicles long devoid of life. Heedless of the bleached bones scattered as far as the eye could see, the Vandal raised his sniper rifle and peered through the scope. A small object was wending its way through the twisted steel wreckage, seemingly searching for something. It buzzed in and out of the ancient metal frames, looking here, then flying quickly over there, its single blue eye examining this and that for some inscrutable signs which only it could decipher. Suddenly, it stopped, it's several parts rapidly rearranging themselves around its spherical core, and expanding into a crackling blue sphere perhaps twice its size. Then it gave off a flash of incredibly bright light. “Guardian... Guardian? Eyes up Guardian!” The metallic voice penetrated his dim consciousness, as did the pale sunlight. The wind whipped around his head, but he couldn't feel its chill. A sensation of rising up from deep water slowly began to ebb as his sensor packages came online and his processors began to hum. As the darkess slowly, almost reluctantly, lifted from his eyes, the strange being continued to speak. “It worked... You're alive! You don't know how long I've been looking for you.” The thing hovered and bobbed with obvious satisfaction at its achievement. He looked down at his hands: in his final memory, they had been melted and deformed by the dark energy which had consumed him, along with countless others. Now they were whole and functional. Just what had happened? And what the hell was this floating piece of geometry talking to him? As if sensing his question, it spoke again. “I'm a Ghost. Actually, I'm your Ghost. And you... well you've been dead a long time. So, you're going to see a lot of things you won't understand.” The understatement was striking. A sudden howl in the distance attracted the orb's attention momentarily, and then it turned back to the metallic form standing before it. “This is Fallen territory. We aren't safe here. I have to get you to the City.” ….................. As the Speaker returned to his collection of arcane books and other strange items, a sense of purpose began to well up in the Guardian. Centuries ago, it hadn't been enough. But now... now it just might be. by Xeryon If you enjoyed, read a story by a fellow fireteam member. http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/67704853

Alright, I had a go at it. I haven't written in a while so it's kind of sloppy and not nearly as deep as yours..but here it is! Please feel free to critique. Blade Dancer His boots hit the ground with great velocity, forcing him to imbue himself with the Light of the Traveler momentarily to absorb the impact as the dry Martian surface cracked beneath him. The hum of his ship slowly dissipated with the dust plume his landing had created as the howling winds introduced themselves, tossing the sands this way and that. The three Cabal roared in shock, whirling around to fortify their position with large shields, squinting dumbly as they tried to peer through the dust to glimpse their enemy. A snarl rippled through the hulking beasts as they spied the Guardian. Kneeling with his fist on the ground, the Hunter was still. Listening.. Waiting for the Cabal to challenge him. To make the first move. His cape whipped back and forth in the harsh Martian winds as the Cabal slowly advanced towards him. The shining sun burned down on him, glinting off of his newly acquired arsenal. Slowly, he brought his head up as the Cabal grew still closer. This caused two of the smaller cabal to seize their advance as the third and mightiest grew nearer. Spitting and snarling, the mighty beast dropped his shield as he began to take large strides towards the Guardian of Earth. Behind his visor, a smile pulled at the Hunter’s lips. He felt the ground quake beneath him as the Cabal planted each foot so surely, so confidently. A captain. Suddenly, the captain let forth a mighty roar as he began to sprint towards the Guardian, firing his weapon madly. Every bullet that found it’s mark made no purchase on the Hunter’s armor. The force of each impact causing him to slightly flinch before regaining his composure as he still kneeled, looking onward toward the rapidly advancing foe. The beast howled once more as his clip ran dry, slamming his weapon into the Martian surface while keeping his momentum. He was nearly within striking distance. The hunter saw the hatred burning in his eyes as the Cabal readied for the impact, reeling his fist back for the mighty blow. There was a small glint as something wisped through the air, singing as it flew toward the captain. Suddenly the Hunter was on his feet as the hulking body slammed into the ground, sliding into the dry, cracked surface. He stepped aside and watched as the limp corpse of his defeated adversary came to a stop where he had knelt before, crouching down to remove an extravagantly designed knife from the skull and helmet of the Cabal captain. Wiping the blade on his cloak, the Hunter slowly looked up at the other two cabal staring back at him in astonishment and fear as their eyes darted from their fallen captain to the Guardian standing over him. They shrieked in rage, smashing their enormous shields into the ground beneath them as they drew their weapons and began firing at their enemy. The Hunter began slowly advancing toward them, barely flinching as round after round glanced off of his formidable armor. He began to feel the traveler’s light within him, coursing through every fiber of his being. His stride had become a slow jog while he neared the grunts that were now shrieking and slowly backing away behind their shields. Sprinting now, his body began to glow with the Light. At about 5 yards out, the Hunter pushed off the sands with all of his might as his figure began to warp in space and time. The Cabal shrieked and turned to run as there was a soft clap behind them. In the blink of an eye, the Guardian had appeared in front of them. His image was blurred as lightning began to crackle through the dry air, wrapping itself around the Guardian and his blade. In one swift movement that was so graceful, he could have been dancing with his blade, the Hunter spun around rapidly between the two hulking beasts, cutting shields and body in half. He stood there in a power stance, gazing at his feet as his cape whipped up behind him. The remains of the cabal began to burn and whither as arc energy coursed through them, deteriorating their bodies from the inside out. The faint sounds of a familiar roaring engine could be heard as a voice chimed in through the Hunter’s headset. “DAMN bro! You totally owned them. Get any loot?” The Titan exclaimed in excitement as his Sparrow hummed up to the Hunter, kicking Martian dust into the dry air. “Nah, just some Heavy Ammo. This new armor is pretty badass though.” The Hunter replied as he looked himself up and down, marveled by his stylish armor plating. The titan jabbed his thumb, referencing the hills to their west. “Let’s go check out that area. Maybe we can find some missions. I need some Vanguard rep actually.” The hunter nodded, donning his hood as he summoned his own Sparrow from beneath him. The vehicle rumbled and whined under his legs as he engaged the thrusters. “Race you.” He said calmly through his headset as they both streamed toward the western hills of the Martian landscape. • Damn dude, that gave me chills. I love writing short stories like this! You blew this one out of the water, bravo. I would love to see more! 2 small critiques: In the second and third paragraph as I was reading I felt like maybe you used the word 'creators' too consistently. And also, in the 6th paragraph, you wrote that "pain and darkness overcame him.." But you mentioned he couldn't feel the wind or the blood on his face? Maybe you meant to write it this way but is seemed inconsistent with the other sensory descriptions. But yeah man, awesome job. You've inspired me to write one of my own!

It was another glorious morning in the Last City. The streets were bustling with eager citizens just wanting to do enough to get by, as well as Guardians who kept them safe from the Darkness. However, it was not like this everywhere. At the base of the Tower, there is an extensive neighborhood of slums, littered with criminals and ne’er-do-wells. This is the place where I grew up. Being the only child with two dads in a place like this was rough living, especially when their line of work was so distasteful. What was their line of work, exactly? They sold their bodies to Guardians who would sneak out of the Tower in the night for some quick loving. It got to a point where they couldn’t support the family by themselves anymore, which led to them forcing me into the family business. Never have I been so miserable in my life. They would make me stand on the street corner in front of our slum wearing these sparkling, skimpy outfits and flirt with potential customers. Sometimes I would court Guardians with sick, twisted fetishes that would make me feel lower than garbage. One time, a Guardian, an awoken Titan to be exact, made me insert his Ghost into my rectum while tickling his nipples and singing, “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” by Def Leppard. The worst part was that sometimes, I actually enjoyed the times that these Guardians used me for their own pleasure, because it was the only way that I could feel pleasure as well. My fathers only cared about their love life and had no regard for my own well-being. This led me to become highly depressed and suicidal, that is, until I met a certain Guardian that changed my life forever. There were days where I would sit outside on the scum-filled streets below the Tower and just gaze upon its glory, dreaming about the possibility of me being a Guardian myself. Pleasuring Guardians just wasn’t enough for me, I wanted to join the fight against the Darkness, and an Evo Warlock, who I am forever grateful for, gave me that opportunity. The night where he became my customer was the greatest night of my life. Even though he made me do horrendous things, such as covering his cold, steel frame in grease and licking it off, he became my true inspiration. As my tongue worked its way down to his hips, he stopped me and said, “I see great potential in you, whore.” I caressed his thighs and asked, “What do you mean?” He stopped what he was doing, looked straight into my lustful eyes, and said, “How would you like to be a Warlock?” At that moment, my entire life took a turn for the better. Later that night, I packed my things and sneaked out into the night with my lover, which would then become my mentor. He taught me everything I needed to know about being a Warlock, such as summoning the power to launch the mighty Nova bomb, as well as using my magic to pleasure others in ways that I never imagined was possible. The sex that we had was so intense that it made me a stronger individual, which helped propel me into my dream of becoming a Guardian. Now, I am considered to be the top Warlock in the Tower. I use my disgusting past of whoring myself as a means of motivation to kill the Darkness. Whenever I encounter one of the Fallen, I imagine that they are my fathers as I blow them to bits. This sort of killing gives me a massive rage-boner that fuels my hatred for them, as well as prevents the ever-growing danger of erectile dysfunction that plagues Guardians. If there are any other aspiring Guardians reading this, here is my advice for you: Enter the prostitution business, and pleasure as many Guardians as you possibly can. ~ fin

No matter how many battles I've been in and won. No matter how many magazines on my nuts. No matter how many Fallen I eat up. Oh, it's never enough. EDIT: That is an amazing story. I like your narration style.
