Exploring the Exo:

Hey Bungie Community! In my wanderings through these forums, someone asked me: "What are the Exo?" I'm a really philosophical guy, so I started my answer to help out and tell him what we know, but as I dove deeper it developed into a discussion not only of what an Exo is, but what it means to "be" Exo. The remainder of this post is my answer to him (heavily edited and expanded), and I wanted to share my thoughts with all of you to maybe provide a new perspective on, and perhaps a new appreciation for: the race of Exo. With that introduction, I give you: Exploring The Exo: The Exo were war machines designed and built by humans. The Traveler wiped their memories of all of the time before and then blessed them with true sentience. The Exo are true thinking, feeling beings now. They are still machines inside and out, but they absolutely have full and evolving personalities like everyone else. The Exo must confront their lack of mortality (an Exo lives forever with effective maintenance), to my knowledge they cannot mate or reproduce (I'm fairly certain the secrets of building the Exo was lost in the collapse as well), and that they cannot remember any of their existence before the Traveler uplifted them. There are both male and female Exo. I believe this is only for the purposes of defining themselves as having a male or female persona now that they are sentient, rather than for mating capability. The body types are likely different to accent and celebrate that "choice." I know gender isn't a choice per se [at birth], so when each Exo was uplifted by the Traveler, it was likely "born" in that moment and must have realized that they were either one or the other. That issue of gender without gender roles may be another of issues that every Exo faces. They also have no childhood, no learning process through years of experiences under the guidance of parents to make them who they are. They were static. One moment they did not exist from their own perspective, and the next moment they did. Its like their entire personality, all of who they are... was just given to them, handed down from on high, rather than developed over years of growing up and experiencing things. Its gotta be a shocking way to enter the world, and it can't be comforting to know that SOMETHING ELSE decided who YOU were going to be. To look at another possibility, assume for a moment that when they were born in that moment of uplifting it was as if they knew nothing at all (emulating a human newborn), then they would have learned everything from humans (in the Golden age and early stages of the collapse there were no Awoken, and those who existed in the dark ages lived almost exclusively on the Reef. This would make it very unlikely for an Awoken to have ever "raised" an Exo). What would that mean for them? How alien would it feel to sit down to a family dinner when you cannot grasp the concept of food? As children, these Exo would not have been smaller than their adoptive parents, they would in most cases be physically superior. By what method then could a young Exo be disciplined? As a sentient being, every Exo should be vulnerable to feelings like pride or anger. How would a proud and self aware Exo take orders from a mother or father figure whom they could beat to a pulp in seconds? Why must he or she listen to those who cannot enforce their own rules? In the end I don't know if one or either of these cases is the truth concerning the uplifting of the Exo, but both possibilities are rife with unique challenges that simply are not faced by members of any other race. The Exo are philosophically pretty cool. They can make really interesting characters, especially when/if they learn that their entire race were once unthinking slaves used by humans for protection and warfare. This event raises some wicked questions. How does that make them feel about the robots that we see doing all of the menial labour in the tower now? Would they understand that the use of a non sentient machine is different from slavery, or would they see what they could have been and be disgusted? Even better, how does that make an Exo feel about being a Guardian?A being brought back from the dead for the singular purpose of protecting the City by roaming the solar system and killing every single threat to its inhabitants? Does that diminish them once again into no more than slaves used by others for protection and warfare? With the knowledge of his or her race's past available to them, An Exo guardian might feel more like a slave than a hero. As if we didn't have enough degrees of separation already, the Exo also don't sleep which is admittedly badass and quite useful, but could also be very lonely in a world of Humans and Awoken. Could this make Exo society self contained? When the Humans and the Awoken of the City go to sleep (I can't comment on the sleep patterns of the Awoken, they may not match those of humans, but lets assume for now that they're similar), the Exo population in its entirety remains exactly the same. Naturally they could spend this time together, and no member of the other races can be there for them all the time. Eventually the differences in schedule and culture could lead to many Exo folk drifting away from organic society, preferring their own kind exclusively. There are likely no rituals for eating, there are none for sleeping, waste excretion is a non issue. Routine maintenance could be better understood by those who also perform it upon themselves, and of course there must be many other issues besides. In addition, organic races would eventually be surpassed in knowledge and wisdom by the Exo, who have lived every moment since the moment of uplifting to the present (with the exception of those who died and were raised as Guardians, they/we clearly missed a big chunk of time). The sheer number of experiences they have would make most Exo very wise and interesting people. This raises another interesting question. Does the Exo have limited memory storage space? Of course it probably does internally. Exo memories were never designed by humans, but rather were "granted" by the Traveler. The physical computational memory used by them as machines of war before their transformation is certainly quite significant, but is that how they record their memories now? If that was so there would be a defined limit to what an Exo can know and remember. This is true for all races, but the Exo may be forced to actively pick and choose which of its experiences, which parts of its life to simply erase. At first glance such an ability is both a blessing and a curse. It is also one more thing that may prevent the Exo on a fundamental level from fitting into the human societies we all know. Moving on from there, we've assumed so far that as sentient mechanical beings the Exo are fully emotionally capable... so then what in Gods name does an Exo do when they fall in love with an organic? It could happen to an Exo as easily as to a Human, and as any wise person understands, we can't choose who to love. The Exo don't need sexuality as part of their companionship, but its presence in organic life could make that a serious barrier to her (or him). They could not produce offspring with that person, and if they were exclusive romantically, they would condemn their partner to a life with no sexual component, and more importantly no children. Then, even if all that works out, when the Exo's organic partner dies, they have to continue on alone. Nevermind all of the potential social stygma around the idea of organic/synthetic relationships. Like I said earlier, the Exo are philosophically very interesting. Just by virtue of their birth race they can be quite tragic characters. They must shoulder burdens we can only even wonder at. They see a World they cannot be a part of that has existed since before they themselves were even an idea. They owe the Traveler their "existence" (in its Cartesian definition), but they would not exist without the Humans who built their bodies. All they are, the good and bad, was someone else's decision. Do they love the others for making the right decisions, or hate them for making the wrong ones? Should they thank us for their existence, or blame us for the pain they suffer because of it? There is an old saying that "To 'ere is human, to forgive, divine." The Exo are neither. Thanks for reading -Thoughtfully yours, TheDestined

I like your post. I think the most important point you brought up is being emotionally capable. By that we are looking at them through a human lens. Emotions, or what triggers them would have to be nurture rather than nature. If they are truly independent and free thinking, it is only natural to have at least two opposing forces, including the belief or disbelief in what us guardians are trying to accomplish (Bad guy EXOs from a Guardian's point of view). This would be true even if they all learned the same thing. Of course if you threaten them with disassembly. I think this would be the only possible explanation for 100% of the EXO population being compliant. a vague final analysis would be they are moderately intelligent. They can fly a ship, carry on a conversation and fight. Interaction with other entities are basic. They dont feel pain and any expression that would seem either positive or negative would be imprinted in a memory bank to react as such in certain situations rather than a chemical reaction that is naturally triggered in nature for a reason or purpose. Of course it would still suck for us humans to lets say watch an EXO die. It would register to us as distressing in some way and we would feel despite the EXO having an automated response to it dying : EXO "I.... feeeel...... sooooooo....... cooolllllldd...." Guardian "Stop it, your a robot and we can fix your brain when we get back to the tower" We are looking at this too humanly. Sorry to ruin some peoples parade but dogs dont smile and neither do dolphins. :)

    • Awesome post!!! Someone mentionned Blade Runner, somewhere below. That got me thinking: do we even know for a fact that Exos are immortal? I mean, if they truly are "so advanced that nothing short of a Ghost can understand their inner functions", I highly doubt that maintenance is just a monthly tune-up at Ol' Dinklebot's Bits & Parts!!! At this point in time, their power source, whatever that may be, most probably cannot be replaced anymore. At least, not without damaging core systems and effective memory (such as before your Ghost finds you). Like so many things that earned The Golden Age it's name, that knowledge seems to have been lost with the Collapse. In any case, it stands to reason that an Exo's power source could very well have only a set duration/charge. Once that power source is truly and completely depleted, well... that Exo has reached the limit of his life expectancy! So in effect, every Exo would be living on borrowed time, slowly but surely spending his very last energy reserves trying to stave off the coming of the Darkness. And every night, while the Organics of the Last City lay to sleep, these tireless machines of war would relentlessly go on, hoping. Hoping for one more day. Hoping for more time. Enough time to unearth the long lost knowledge of their making, thus recovering their lost immortality. Hence, the Blade Runner reference. What do you think?

      • Very interesting and thought provoking. Here are somethings I can think of to answer some of the philosophical question you presented. First of which I would like to tackle would be, essentially, learning through experience, what is right and wrong, like how a child would learn and grow on a personnel level. As you pointed out, a EXO, especially one who was just given sentience and being fully aware by the Traveler, they would clearly have a lot of questions and emotional issues, just complete shock and confusion. But we must remember, they were given sentience by the Traveler and the Traveler has been around humanity for a while to understand us. So its possible that when the Traveler elevated them, it could have possibly imprinted that information into the EXOs. So essentially every EXO already has at least a basic understanding of right and wrong, a mung other things right from "birth" like an instinct. Another good question you brought up was how they see themselves being built for war, and what is their feelings towards the other robots we see around the tower. Well, if the Travelers Human imprinting holds true, then they would have similar instinctual behavior like Humans. And on the most basic of levels is 'what is familiar, and what do I associate my self with most?' Now there is the obviace "I am a machine." but then the question the EXO would ask its self "Do I associate my self with a machine or do I associate my self with something more"? It is clear that EXOs are thinking feeling beings. A true definition of a robot on the other hand is not. Humans are social creature, and because EXOs are imprinted with Human behavior its possible that they too would need social interaction. And like Humans, would look for physical social cues for approval, this stems from the primitive need to be a part of a group, the basic instinct of safety in numbers deal. A robot would not be able to give this social interaction. This also extends into emotions and a need to connect with another on a deeper emotional level. In short, what I am getting at is that even though EXOs are machines, they probably would not view them selves on the same level as the average robot and see the others robots the same way as Humans and Awokan do. As for their thoughts on their purpose for being created as war machines, well, given that both Humans and EXOs were fighting and dieing along side each other for survival they could have developed a bond with each other, similar to how a squad of soldiers view each other as brothers and family. What ever differences they might have had from the start would give way to respect and acceptance, especial if they were sentient during this time NOTE: Their is a Female EXO from the Future War Cult Faction at the tower in the hanger area that talks about her past during 'The Colaps'. Clearly she was sentient when that took place and gives credibility to this. For gender and why there is a Male and Female EXO, which makes little sense as they do not reproduce (Unless Female EXOs have a little factory built in...). This is where I believe where more of the Human imprint comes into play, as a way for a person to identify them selves is also by their gender, on top of that, "Art mimicking life". Now if the Human imprint theory holds true then EXOs would not only have feelings and emotions but could in fact have feelings of love. Something that would be very interesting, especially if say a EXO and a Human were affectionate towards each other. As for physical intimacy, if EXOs do have deep passionate feelings toward their partner, all they would need is the proper gear shall we say.

This is amazing. The Exo really intrigued me, partially because I'm a super nerd and are intrigued by warforged in D&D. Also just a side note. Has anyone else been havering problems with notifications on the mobile app. Anytime someone replies or likes one of my posts in never shows up in the notification center. If anyone knows how to solve this problem it'd be much appreciated if you could message me.

        • I can't help but feel that it was a missed opportunity to name yourself The Digidestined, but whatever. Anyways, the part about Exos living forever seems a tad bit "wrong" (no offense intended, I just can't think of a better way to say it). The reason being that, as you said, they would require maintenance. While some of their simpler systems can probably replaced/repaired without much issue, the loss of the knowledge required to build new Exos would most likely mean that failure of some of their more complicated systems would effectively result in "death" for the Exo. As for the part about "so then what in Gods name does an Exo do when they fall in love with an organic?", just watch the Proposition Infinity episode of Futurama. It will explain the birds and the robo-bees.

              • Based on your thoughts about Exo's being driven into isolation, it seems like the hunter would be the best fit for an Exo. They are lone wolves, and seem to isolate themselves from other Guardians, which would fit perfectly with an Exo who was struggling to fit into the society of the Last City and would rather be on its own.

                • The way I see it is: The Exo are essentially a construct post singularity brought on by the Traveler. The way I see it the Exo are of "pure sentience" there is no difference between them and organics besides culture. Golden Age-era humans had created them and much like the war with the Darkness their creation has been lost in time. I speculate the reason why Ghosts only know their "inner workings" is that they were formed of the same knowledge.

                      • Time for the devil's advocate to step up to the podium. 1. The grimoire card for the Exo's state that whomever designed them gave the diversity of mind and body, suggesting that they were sentient war machines long before the traveler resurrected them. What evidence suggests otherwise? 2. Why do they not sleep? Just because they're machines doesn't mean they don't require downtime. I would imagine that they reboot regularly to maintain proper data integrity, causing them to enter a sleep-like state for software maintenance. 3. How exactly are they immortal with maintenance? Both Halo and Marathon have featured AI programming fallen prey to rampancy over time. While no Exo rampancy has been confirmed, what are the odds that Bungie won't borrow that particular trait from their earlier work yet again? 4. Point #1 refutes the notion of Exo childhood. 5. While genders may not apply, Exo may be able to reproduce through use of nanotechnology (in terms of physical construction). The genders may apply in that multiple 'parents' are necessary to properly create the software component of new Exo (e.g. female Exo contain the compiler while the male provides raw code). 6. Why wouldn't the Exo view non-sentient machines the same way we view non-sentient animalia? If you have any citations to add, I'd like to hear them.

                          • With how advanced the humans during the Golden Age seem to have been, I feel we can safely assume they could create hyperintelligent AI. It would make sense because they were created to help fight the darkness. An AI that can learn and feel is much more reliable on the battlefield than pre-programmed software. And since this AI can learn, it would only be a matter of time before personality, morality, and emotions formed. And there you have yourself a sentient intelligence capable of complex thought. The different genders are possibly to help assimilate the Exos into the military. When they have body types similar to men and women, humans would be more likely to acclimate to them. Would you be more comfortable fighting alongside the Exos or an unskinned T-800?
