This is just a theory about why bungie announced/decided no raid matchmaking and the logic that could be behind the decision
Having no MM in raids is a risky move by bungie as pretty much every game has MM coop from WoW to GoW to Halo 4 that is something we can all agree on
But if they ship the game with raid MM then attempt to take it away?
Then there would be an uproar as no one like features being taken away
so if they wanted to leave it to the raw data to decide which is better MM raids? or no MM raids? than just on opinions, then no MM raids is what they would have to test first
There is also how Luke Smith said "barrier I was willing to erect" not "we" so bungie developers may not all agree with this choice
They have shown they already have coop MM for strikes so there already have the MM system designed and operational doing it for 6 instead of 3 is the only minor tweak required
so if bungie changes their mind they are just a small patch away from adding raid MM
but why do this in the first place? well there are some benefits to it
1) it ensures raids are a serious thing and the people going in are committed
2) forces people to join clans trying to promote the social aspect of destiny
3) higher chance of team mates communicating if they had to assemble the team themselves
4) less people dropping out if you had to go to effort assemble a team you wont want to leave unless its a damn good reason
(some people use stopping noobs crying nerf as a pro but what do you think will make some cry nerf more? jumping into a raid and dieing? or going through effort of assembling a team and still dieing?)
So do any of you think this could be the case? are bungie waiting on the raw data to make their final decision?
PS I believe the the pro's of MM raids far out weigh the pro's of no MM raids but i hope I have been fair the the benefits of no MM raids

Good post OP.
